Tips and drills fellas. This stuff helped me.
    1. Play catch with 2 balls (each guy has a ball and you throw it at each other) (hard to think about throwing when you are more worried about not getting hit in the face)
    2. Play catch with another ball (Anything other than a baseball, basket ball volley ball)
    3. Play catch with someone who doesn't play baseball
    4. Throw junk (throw curve balls, knuckle balls, submarine, jeter it)
    5. Start throwing warmup from further away
**let me know how it goes for you!

I'm a sophomore catcher and I have the yips only throwing back to the pitcher, I'll throw fine to any base or even covering a bunt but to the pitcher it's awful. It started out as one bad throw, then my coach yelling at me and now spiraled down. I've made progress on overcoming it but it's been 2 months since I first started noticing that I have the yips, and at my worst point I would lob the ball back to the pitcher because I didn't want to overthrow or make anyone upset. I would also walk out in front of the plate to make sure that I wouldn't hit the batter, but it's been getting a little better and I need to keep improving

  • @yanksguy23
    @yanksguy23 6 років тому +19

What worked for me was to throw a pitch, even if not a pitcher, that you don't usually throw. Try a knuckle ball, a slurve, a circle change, whatever. It gets your head out of the place where "I can't make the throw- I can make the throw-throw harder-no, not so hard-stop thinking about it-FUCKING STOP THINKING!" mindset. You start thinking about your new pitch and stop thinking how you're going to screw up. Hope it helps.

I've been playing baseball since i was 5 and now im a junior in highschool. Now that the season is starting up and i played catch for the first time in months and I've completely forgot how to throw the ball. It either goes straight in the ground or a huge overthrow. Ive never had this happen before and I hope this doesn't last long.

So for the past couple years I have had issues with the yips. In game when pitching I am usually okay. But in warm ups I am a mess. At least once or twice I freeze up, throw the ball over the catcher, or stop my motion completely. The root cause for this is that I am afraid that the catcher is not paying attention and I am going to hurt him. This is what causes me to freeze. Towards the end of a game the other day I had no confidence, I couldn't grip the ball and the yips started happening in game. Any tips because it would be a damn shame if this is how it shakes out...

I had probably the worst case you could ever dream of. When I was in 7th grade, I couldn't throw the ball 30 feet, and even when it was closer than that, I would miss my target. Then in my 8th grade year, I could hit a target 200 feet away. The funny thing is, I didn't do anything different from my 7th grade year. At least not that I know of.

I just can't throw casually. When under pressure and only to one person I get it right every time. But when me and my team seperate into pairs and I'm throwing to my partner I hit the other people across the room next to my partner like 5 feet away I think I may be letting go to early among other problems. Any advice?

@web3pt0 Juan Martin del Potro blows on his hand to dry it, then bounces the ball with the racquet. Roger Federer bounces the ball once on the frame, and then on the strings, every serve. Andy Murray bounces the ball 6 times with his hand. 6 times, every fraggin serve. Watch and see. There's a method to this madness. It's relaxing for the body and mind. Makes you forget about your accuracy worries. Tennis players are almost as flakey as pitchers, and there is a good reason why.

I’ve had the yips bad for years. but i only recently realized it. i’m a top softball pitcher but the yips really gets my throwing. only rarely does it affect my pitching. i got away with it because i was so strong in everything else and i could underhand toss or lob for the minimal plays i had at pitcher, but it was humiliating and frustrating. especially since i actually have a killer arm when i’m just normal. a cannon and always to the glove. then one day i just can’t feel anything. seriously it’s been several years of this nightmare.

I'm a 16 year old that got the yips last summer and it's only gotten worse since. I was A super good 2nd baseman my freshman year for the varsity team and then the summer after that is when I got them. I've tried just about everything and nothing has worked. I got moved from starting 2nd baseman to 3rd string 1st baseman my sophomore year because I couldn't make a simple throw to the first baseman. It's a shitty thing to go through especially if u have it bad. I have thought about totally quitting baseball several times but I just love the game too much. I’m in My mid 40s and it still bothers me. I had a promising career. I was a sophomore in high school and things were looking good. I was throwing about mid 80s and in 1993, that was good for 15 years old. Now it’s varsity..I went out and I had a bad game. I walked the bases loaded, hit two guys, and gave up a grand slam. Coaches then were not like they are today. They did not consider your mental health or anything like that. He was just like YOU GAVE UP 6 RUNS ON ONE HIT THATS AWFUL! and that was it. But then things kept deteriorating, and fast from there. Yeah I was all over the place that day and the sun was kinda in My eyes as the fid was built backwards and all that, but still..I was wild..but I was throwing normally..but from then on it got worse and worse until it was to the point where my arm would literally pause as it was coming forward and what should be a mid to high 80s fastball came out like 70mph. In the bullpen I’d fire them and in the game I couldn’t. It got so bad that after a while I was just hoping they’d never put Me in..but k kept trying because I knew I had the arm..I tried everything. I tried a short arm path, sidearm, submarine. It didn’t matter…every time it counted the same thing happened. I was able to control it to a degree after a certain point but would never be the same. I could not fire with all My might. I could just basically throw at 75% or so. I went to a few major league tryouts and even at one of them threw like 91-92…I felt great that day, but then the next day it wouldn’t feel that great. Every time I found what I thought would be the answer to my delivery, after it feeling super comfortable one day, the same thing would happen the next. It was awful. It’s something that’s bothered Me My whole Life. It’s all My teammates will ever remember Me for..sure, I know him. He threw gas in the bullpen but couldn’t do it in the game. One time I was pitching in a summer ball league absolutely firing throwing like low 90s..facing kids I played with in college. One of My coaches showed up and was trying to recruit me, before my teammates told Him it was Me and I’m already on the team. He couldn’t believe it was me. I also caught wind of someone taking me up to another coach and when the guy heard My name He said “I’m a pitching coach not a fucking psychiatrist” so this was something that plagued me throughout my life. My Father could never understand it. He used to SCREAM at Me from the top of His lungs on the rides Home. My teammates couldn’t get it. My coaches got frustrated. Nobody could understand it, but let me tell You it’s a living nightmare and I don’t know why to this day it happened..but it’s affected Me in nearly every aspect of My Life..I took a career in sales and it affected Me there until I just finally got out of that. It affected Me in My relationships..it makes You second guess Yourself and overanalyze everything.
I started playing softball in My college days and it was like a breath of fresh air. I played the outfield and would FIRE STRIKES to home plate and the bases..it was nothing anyone had ever seen. I had 18 assists one year. But You put Me on a mound and it all goes away. I had a 90mph arm and a 2 dollar brain. This upset Me so much. I’m in an over 40 league now and I began pitching again. Its a very low pressure situation so I’m ok there, but every time I warm up and get out there, it’s with Me. I have the comfort at this point of knowing that if it happens again, I can just pretend it’s my arm hurting and take my self out of the game, so I have an emotional safety net, but all I ever wanted was to have a career. Even if it wasn’t a professional career, at least a solid amateur career. I played baseball through college, mostly on the bench and just some relief appearances in meaningless games. But like I said, just started when I was 16 years old so those last five or six years were absolute torture. I would not wish this on anybody.

It's called "interference". IMO, the best way to get over it is to take a break and retrain. However, if you don't have that luxury, you need refocus your brain on something else. The perfect example and solution is by Alan Fine. ua-cam.com/video/FFAGOdCdFrc/v-deo.html Pitchers, fielders, tennis players, etc. I wish I knew this when I played.

@web3pt0 I presume the yips are effecting your serve. If that is the case, I recommend developing a ritual, and focus on that. If you watch all the great champions, they all have distinct rituals as they prepare to serve. Rafael Nadal, picks at his shorts, then bounces the ball with his racquet while pushing his hair behind his ears, then he grabs the ball and bounces it with his hand. If you watch closely, he does the same thing on every serve. All the top pros do. Get back on the court!

i had the yips a month ago. i was practicing and every ball i threw was hitting the ground 5 feet short of the plate. same velocity but i think maybe i was just dipping or something. every pitch. i was wondering what the hell was going on. i tried switching my delivery and everything just to see what wud happen but it didnt work. lol

Freshman or sophomore year is when i developed it. Fuck its embarrassing.
We had to warm up almost shoulder to shoulder in a small gym for tryouts. I threw one almost into the guy next to the dude i was throwing with. Ever since that one throw it was in my head. Trying to be perfect, trying to be overly accurate.
I can pitch. I cannot throw. I played first, have a hard time throwing back to the mound after a pickoff, not good at throwing to 2nd. But i can throw home and 3rd.
Got so bad warming up, just playing catch i would dread it. Helped if i threw some pop ups to myself as hard and as high as i could because i didn't need to be perfect, i could always run underneath them. Once i had a few of those i could play catch most of the time. But once catch was over, and had to make a throw to 2nd or something there was the mental block again. I didn't play after sophomore year.
Now i play in a beer league with guys from work once a week. its still there. I play some first, i just deal with it. But i feel more comfortable in the OF where i can bomb throws from the wall to the plate. I wish i didn't have all these thoughts and issues during HS because i love baseball so much.

@Andrew Seaman i would throw using a curveball grip, that worked alot of the time, sure. Cuz it always felt like i was dropping my arm and i came over the top putting a stupid spin on it to begin with. Using a curve ball grip just seemed to help me but not always and with different levels of "success"

Is there anyway I can email you and talk to you thoroughly about this? Im a pitcher at a Pac-12 school right now and I have suddenly coming down with this. I have consulted the psych people at my school and its not helping. I am usually a 89-91, accurate guy, and now I can barely throw ten feet. Maybe email or text? I need help, thanks.

What do you do for tennis yips? I've had them since H.S., and I barely play now because of them. I don't get them putting... just ping pong and tennis.

@@LAbigsnoopac shortly after I wrote this comment I had practice and the next day woke up in considerable pain got it checked out ended up being a partially torn rotator cuff. The yips is a tough disease everyone gets them man no avoiding them we all get them at some point I’ve delt with them a hand full of times and one of the things I like to do is go to the field with one of my friends and just throw the ball and not give a fuck about where it goes don’t care if I spike it in the ground of throw it 20 feet over his head. Once you do that you should be able to get a better feel for throwing. A lot of the time we put too much pressure on ourselves during practice because we are competing for a spot and baseball is one of the only sports especially at the high school and college level where if you aren’t one of the 9 starters playing time is inconsistent or non existent so baseball I think we tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves because of that.
