she gets irritated because he's trying to impose some nonsense rubbish on her and pushing her to response to that. he think about himself how well educated he is and how knowledgeable are his question, but he only expose his lack of understanding of music and art in general.
who wouldn't be irritated??
1. the interviewer does not listen does not let her speak he ask a questions and then he cuts her communication... he talks too much and he is irritating she is beautiful but he is not letting her talk.

Mitsuko Uchida expresses the divine. THAT is why I fall in love with her, and that is what she means by beauty; it is not always comfortable but it IS always true. Of course she believes in the transcendent, she IS transcendent.
Many people need to learn lessons in life, Mitsuko Urchida merely has to express the divine.
For me they dialog is interesting,Because one man suspects to the music and On the otherman has a love for the music.

It doesnt really help when every interviewer is constantly bashed:DD In the end we get to hear amazing things from people.
"A tone-row has got implications to the past"...well, duh. A well-structured set can contain any number of references to triadic harmony, including sub-sets that "sound tonal". "Strong and good music" it is.
@plexihout she was irritated at that point coz she makes her best effort at the 8th chopin competition and she didn't won but today She got all the succes all the world so thats the reason for her andry = )
The interviewer is clearly blind to art.

Actually, thanks to him, we are able to realise how hideous our mundane ideas are and how brilliant Uchida and art is!
OMG why is the interviewer so patronizing? He's correcting her on Shubert? Seriously? Wow!
"Dick" : And you found it extremely difficult. At first hand, you didn't succeed.
Uchida: Succeeding has nothing to do with working. If I went for success, I wouldn't play the piano.
That is the greatest 'annoyed' reply I have ever heard. Go Uchida!!
I've been listening to her interpretations of Mozart & Beethoven for over 35yrs....
She's incomparable ~
"You live, you are born, you die. And in between you feel it as best as you can"
That's some line, huh! She's amazing!
I believe she said "fill it"...but still lovely in its simplicity.

@hd9xc1k2 I don't agree. I think the journalist is great. Yes, he isn't the sweet-like-honey kind and doesn't fall to his knees in praise. But he is not the typical, uninterested "do-my-job-who-is-next?-How-do-you-speak-her-name-again?" kind of press idiot. He provokes Uchida's thoughts and makes the interview a short, fertile gem. She is a very strong personality, I don't think she gets upset by journalists like him. He is not my favourite. Yet I think he did a good job!

It is quite fun to watch their brains interact and work to communicate. I find her to be obsessive. I love it. He is quite reasonable. The contrast is delightful.
Today, I think I will pay more attention to detail.
I wouldn't describe it as 'delightful'. Yeah, it was quiet interesting to see them interacting. But hell was it desperating! It certainly was! Maybe because I can't stand him trying to 'reason' everything, putting everything in such a 'flat', functional, incipid way... whereas I find her passion (or obssesion) to be very moving!
Around 10mins 45secs Mitsuko looks at him in surprise and says 'succeeding has nothing to do with working.' Wonderful truly wonderful.

Amazing woman. She really touched me
One of the most charming gentle charismatic woman in music.
The more I hear her play and speak, the more I love her. What an intellect, as well as an amazing talent. Too bad she has this guy interviewing her. For those who can understand German, or can read Japanese (I'm the latter), I highly suggest her interview on Debussy's etudes. The interviewer is much better.
She is absolutely right. There are no lessons in music. That's not why one listens. On listens to be moved to feel less alone in one's inner world.
Music is able to communicate with such directness and clarity, like no other other form of art, what it feels like to be alive. There is something miraculous about the fact that a sequence of sounds can have such an impact. If anything, music mirrors life. As she says, "you are born, you live, and you die..and in between you try to live as best you can."

i think anyone can become good at something if you work hard for it, some people just dont discover their true talent.

I didn't really pay too much attention to the person interviewing, but rather the answers and thoughts Uchida gave - very insightful and full - loved her thoughts!

There is nothing to be learnt from this guy except how not to butt in with nonsense on people who are speaking about great things. I feel what the others say here, it's just painful to watch.

I am really touched by her interpretation of Schubert piano sonatas. And when she said desperate when listening to his D.845, I felt so connected!
He's absolutely terrible. He keeps cutting her off. Still, what she says about music is so true.

@plexihout I saw the 1hour interview you have linked. And still I feel the interviewer is very rude and asking wrong or silly questions. I can see he is an honest guy but for this interview, he did a very poor job. He should thank Ms. Uchida for her patience. But anyway, thanks for uploading the videos. Those are really something to see. I mean in so many ways....
God, I adore this woman. Brilliant. And I appreciate the interviewer challenging her, it brings more stimulating answers.
Maaaaan stop interrupting her while she's talking...I want to hear HER opinions, not YOURS, dear Mr. Interviewer man!

plexihout What you say is a truism but nevertheless he's stuck up and slightly rude with his own sense of self with his comment about this being an interview. Trying to nail down the ineffable shows lack of sensitivity and displays arrogance. That's why she plays and doesn't write. She said as much.
She was pretty tolerant of the interviewer. He didn't get classical music as much as he thought he did. Honestly there are classical musicians who would have snapped back at him. She states how she never responded to Liszt or Chopin but Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. FACTS....She did release a great recording of Debussy ETUDES though but not any of his other works. She is cool.
If some one really listens to music and play a little, he will not ask those stupid questions like those.
uchida is just amazing in so many ways. But shes the complete opposite of argerich. People who believe argerich to be great cannot consider uchida to be great. And vice versa. In discussion about the greatest woman pianist, they represent opposite poles of interpretation and schools of thought. Uchida is the emblem of self-made. Argerich was a born genius. Uchida's art is consternation. Argerich's is spartan. Uchida playing has many truths. Argerich only has one.
She is amazing. A music genius...

interviwer suppose that in front of him is politician, ready to answer any question...He wonders her statement,that for her despite the talent is everything hard to achieve in music...That is the answer of many great musicians...Even menuets of Mozart and Bach have something invisible and something noone can hear,but striving to that meaning through constant exploring and practicing is important,the way is important in order to achieve more and more,something never absolute achivable...

I wish he would let her finish her response instead of constantly interrupting her. Conversely, I wish she would learn when to stop talking about things. She should just answer the question and move on. But she is an emotional woman.

James Randi has a reward of 1 million dollars for the first who can prove there is a supernatural event.Since the start in 1960 no one has succeeded to do that.
I relate to her words so much. I wonder what it is that she said was what Schubert’s G Major sonata might mean.

She looks at him after about 10 seconds and he says:how does that work for you,and the conversation goes on. quite naturally in my opinion.
This lady really is at the top of the tree! There is an insane amount of horsepower between those ears. Phew! She reminds me of Nabokov when he talks about literature- He loses me , as Mitsuko-san loses me - What I know about music you could write on the back of a stamp, but what an intoxicating talker. as far for being a respectable journalist, he is interviewing a musician NOT a politician. He can't treat her like this.

someone has to describe music for the average listener, or else we'll be in our own elitist containment forever. It is the journalists duty to ask logical questions which can hopefully bring the average listener closer to a definite answer or description of music. Music's meaning is fleeting and Musicians are often contradictory. This is a great interview, and it stirs up many of the emotions I'd like to see out of Ms. Uchida. If they were just in agreement it'd be terribly boring.
I agree with all of the comments below, thanks for posting this but as respected as the journalist might be, he's such a pighead, doesn't let you enjoy Uchida's thoughts

Such a shame she allowed herself to be interviewed by this incompetent person. She rarely gives interviews. Just such a shame.
