CNJ 113 R&N 425 Santa Claus Steam Train Doubleheader

- CNJ 113 and R&N 425 doublehead three excursions from Minersville, PA to Cressona and return. These trips were the 113's first revenue runs since being restored.
The 113 is an 0-6-0 type steam locomotive built in 1923 by the American Locomotive Works (ALCo) for the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The 113 is the world's largest 0-6-0 and she is one of the only operational Anthracite burning steam locomotives in the USA today.
The 425 was built in 1928 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Gulf Mobile & Northern. The 425 is currently a goodwill ambassador for the Reading & Northern Railroad, often touring its 300 mile rail system.
Early on the 30th we watch the 425 depart the R&N's headquarters of Port Clinton for Schuykill Haven and Minersville. We then see the two steam engines doublehead the excursions, then we watch the 425 tackle the task on her own.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of a steam doubleheader in the Pennsylvania Mountains!

Love the SUPER TYFON horn on the SD50
Damn 425 is loud!
The scene at Schuylkill Haven always gives me chills watching this again, as the SD50 Leading finishes it's Horn Sequence and RBMN 425 shows us what she can do. Beautiful whistle! What kind of whistle is it?
it's a reading 6 chime 1:41

Excellent video!
Thanks!
I hope that since Andy is willing to run #425 with the 113 that he has interest in maybe bringing back 4-6-0 #1098 or Reading 2102.
Two years later and you predicted it all besides the 1098 lol!!

My hometown Schuylkill Haven
425 is the only operational R&N loco? I thought they had a couple? Where does the CNJ 113 normally run? Great Video, as usual!
The 113 doesn't usually run anywhere as of now, as she has only just returned to service and still needs a bit of work. The 425 is currently the R&N's only running steam engine, but hopes are high that that will change soon. The R&N recently announced that they will be investigating the possibility of restoring the 2102.
That's a shame- that the #113 had no place to run. Some of us have asked the B&O Train Museum if they plan on restoring Pacific #5300 to operation- the answer is usually "Where would we run her?". Good to hear about the 2102.
I was there last week and I missed that
Suweet!!! Awesome job guys!!!
Thank you!
I was there.. I was maybe 8-9 at the time..

6:15 CNJ 113 sounds like Clinchfield #311.
Is 113 burning wood?
Yes, she burned wood for a while, they had issues keeping up pressure in the boiler when firing with anthracite.
Everett Meehling
I wonder if that's partly because of a lack of a boiler jacket and insulation?
+Ryan Masecar it had to do with burning full anthracite in 113. With little veneration the fire kept dying out so wood had to be thrown on to re ignight the anthracite. Since this we now use mixtures of anthracite (hard coal) and soft coal and it balances out pretty well! And since this video we added jacketing and it makes a ton of difference!
