The Turbo has so many great games that I’ve overlooked because nobody I knew growing up had one. Thank god for emulation so I can play these awesome games
I got the Turbo Duo for Christmas in 1992, I absolutely loved the system. It was one of my all time favorite consoles, and I had so many great games for it. Splatterhouse, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Dragon Slayer, Lords of Thunder, Gate of Thunder, Ys I and II, Ninja Spirit, Bonk, Bonk 2, and a few others.. Though should probably give up my gamer card, there was small used/import game store in my town, and in 94 or 95, I traded my Turbo Duo for an Atari Jaguar... worst trade I had ever made and regret it to this day.
One of the greatest soundtracks in the history of anything along with FF4 & 6, Super castlevania 4, Streets of rage 2, and SOTN. Such an awesome game. Thanks for the memories.
Now THIS is a treat! Been a fan of this game for years, and still blast the soundtrack in my car to this day. Glad you guys got to playing it :) FYI: It's on Sega CD too with higher-quality audio.
The term "Shmup" was coined by the english magazine Zzap!64 during the mid-80's shoot'em up craze. They loved childish diminutives. How it has later become common place worldwide is quite puzzling.
This games is freaking amazing! On the SEGA CD there's also narration for the cutscene, and the voice actor is so good| Makes everything sound even more epic
The soundtrack for Gate of Thunder is also quite good. I played both of these games on a Turbo Duo at my friends house as a kid. Still enjoy them from time to time, one of my favorites.
he does that ALL the time XD I love James when he isn't scripted. he just reverts to his introvert form and just nods appreciatively. I think there's one with Pat where Pat goes off on a tangent and wait for James to chime in and he just goes "yeah!" XD
The music featured in this game is amazing. Wish I grew up playing games like this. Although I did have a couple good scrolling-shooters on the TurboGrafx.
One I would recommend and it's made by Capcom and ported to Super Nintendo. UN Squadron because aside from side shooter, you also get sub weapons too and different planes.
It must have been regional because over here in Aus, those games were always called "Shoot em ups" in the 80s and 90s. It took me a little while to catch on that these days "Shmups" is just a shortening of that old phrase.
Hey James and Mike. I'm Josh Fraley (A.K.A.) Brutally Awesome Warrior. I am a die-hard fan of all your videos. Especially the AVGN videos! I also like to play retro games like Sega Genesis, Snes, Playstation, etc. I especially like to play Neogeo. I even watch slasher films like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, etc.
I remember a Johnny Turbo ad talking about this game and how "Feka's" CD system had a game that didn't come close. Then the Sega CD would get "Lords of Thunder." (A game which I have a copy of for that system.)
I always called them space shooters, which isn’t fair to 1942 but growing up with Galaga on a master system and Doom/UT(it was an old master system) just what they were to me.
I like that name since you freely move your character anywhere in the space of the screen. And it has the double meaning since most of the games take place in outer space
it remembers me of "Gynoug" on the Mega Drive. The best shmup in my opinion on 8/16 bit consoles is Thunder Force IV on the Mega Drive. really impressive graphics, and a badass metal soundtrack.
I gotta play this game @ some point! Yeah I love those huge bosses in the games from that era too. Another good example of a game with huge awesome bosses was Ranger X for SEGA.
It's really cool seeing James truly enjoy this awesome game. Seeing the kid come out in him put a big ass smile on my face. Lords of Thunder is metal as fuck.
It's been hard to come to terms with the fact that there are so many video games to play these days. This IS a good thing! However, growing up with me and all of my friends waiting for the next game to come out after playing the previous one to death was a lot of fun and quite the bonding experience. These days, only the most popular games are known and experienced by a large number of people. That leaves a metric shit ton of other games which are played by a handful of people (relatively). In the end, I think it's a win win situation. You get the shared experience of playing the biggest titles that everyone can relate to and then you get that niche experience with the oddball games you and a (again, relatively) few other people have played. It's the best of old and new! :)
I use to play firepower 2000 with my brothers when I was a kid. I hope they get to that game soon. I couldn’t remember the name of the game. I have looked everywhere for a copy of that game.
Mike: Look at you! You're like the ultimate warrior badass. Just don't hit things. *Cuts to James with barely any life or power* Mike: Yeah, you got fuckin destroyed.
Play "The Guardian Legend", one of the most underrated NES-gems imo. It's kinda like a combination of Zelda and shmup, and it works perfectly. And The soundtrack is gold, too.
Feel the power of the *PC ENGINE* Pound for pound one of most diverse and greatest collectable formats of all time. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Bithead1000s Pc Engine vids are a must watch.
This game has an amazing soundtrack, you can find it here on youtube. One of the most memorable things about the turbographix was the music in some of the games. See about covering Military Madness. That game was super fun.
Japanese isn't written right to left. On full pages it will be top-down, with columns right-left, but on something like a controller, it's all left to right. I would recommend playing Zero Wing if anyone hasn't before. It has a few unique elements that make it fun like being able to grab an enemy and use them as a shield, or then shooting the enemy's ship out like an extra weapon and grabbing another.
Play Thunder Force 3, or 4 for an awesome challenge, also behold their great soundtracks. Gen's a great shooter console also. But I'd like to try this series sometime and other Pc-Engine shooters.
David Drouant My dad and I had a whole strategy when I was a kid. We'd go a10 as soon as we could with Greg and take turns doing as many truck runs as possible til we had enough to get the ultimate jet! Of course I my 7 year old ass did the truck runs mostly to grind out the $ for him :P
I know this is an old video, but I always took "A" to be "confirm", aka, the primary button. "B" is like the secondary or "cancel" button, so it makes more sense for B to be on the left side on the NES controller.
It took me about 3 days to watch this entire video only because it was a busy work week, not to mention there was a lot of stuff going on with the wife and kids at home. I wasn't aware of the "James and Mike Monday" till this past Monday. This is excellent content fellows!! What a bitching game. I will definitely have download this to my Wii U since an original copy of this title is not cheap. Keep up the good work!!
Since you guys mentioned it, I love the Flash Gordon movie too! Well, I'm a huge Queen fan, so of course I do hehe ;p though all the other stuff in the movie, like the campy-ness, cheezy story, neat special effects, space battle action, etc. are all lots of fun too.
The Turbo has so many great games that I’ve overlooked because nobody I knew growing up had one. Thank god for emulation so I can play these awesome games
Six String Check out the original Splatterhouse and the Legendary Axe games... Unless you already have, then you already know.
This was my all time favorite game on the Sega CD growing up. The soundtrack to this game is what made me want to learn guitar.
I got the Turbo Duo for Christmas in 1992, I absolutely loved the system.

@@Jayce_Alexander exactly!
Legendary axe, salamander, neutopia, dungeon explorer and snatcher are amazing too
The soundtrack of this game is just insanely good.
I totally agree!
I'm literally thrashing
One of the greatest soundtracks in the history of anything along with FF4 & 6, Super castlevania 4, Streets of rage 2, and SOTN.
Such an awesome game. Thanks for the memories.
Thunder Force 4 (Litening Force) is a great shmup.
Awesome graphics & amazing music. One of the best 16bit soundtracks ever.
Mike: yeah you look like a total badass
Next moment
Mike: Yeah you got destroyed
Now THIS is a treat! Been a fan of this game for years, and still blast the soundtrack in my car to this day. Glad you guys got to playing it :) FYI: It's on Sega CD too with higher-quality audio.
Over here in Europe, we called them shoot em ups.
Which later was shortened into Shmups.
Wonderful to see shoot 'em ups on this show, it's my all time favorite genre! I hope the audience reaction is enough to incite more of them! :D
just looked up the OST for this game and ... GOOD LORD, STOP READING RIGHT NOW! CHECK OUT THE FREAKIN OST OF THIS GAME, ITS FUCKIN AMAZING!
DustMan2704 yeah really wish they would turn up the in game music and sfx.. I wanna hear that shit
The soundtrack for Gate of Thunder is also quite good. I played both of these games on a Turbo Duo at my friends house as a kid. Still enjoy them from time to time, one of my favorites.
One of the very best shoot'em ups ever made. Simply.
I just want to say this. THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THIS GAME!!!!
The soundtrack is just epic! :)
I love James and Mike mondays
Might be wrong, but I think that with these early CD ROM Games, the music is stored like a regular Music CD.
Probably, you could play the commodore tapes in a walkman.
It actually really is you can even put some sega saturn games in a cd player and it will play the sound track
You are correct. I have this and yea you can play it on a standard CD player.
A lot of these older games used Red Book Audio for their music.
I played this game on SegaCD and it was really fun. I finished it, too.
"Mhm" - James 2018
*slow nod* - James 2018
-James 2017

James 2017 -Edibles
James 2018 -Xanax
"Uh huh" "Yeah" "Mhm"
I still love James very much
he does that ALL the time XD I love James when he isn't scripted. he just reverts to his introvert form and just nods appreciatively. I think there's one with Pat where Pat goes off on a tangent and wait for James to chime in and he just goes "yeah!" XD
A full half hour of my favorite UA-cam duo to help brighten up a dreary Monday morning before work? Sign me up!
Your wifes already handling the kitchen duties so I'll have to pass on your suggestion 🙄
awe, someone didnt get tucked in last night, lord sosa? xD
your wife is in the kitchen already
then tell that bitch to make me a sandwich then
Oh no you misread me , I don't actually have a wife. I'm only borrowing yours - she's quite the cook ;)
jessica96 maybelle Don't worry she was tucked in very well I must say
I miss the 90s the good old days
The music featured in this game is amazing. Wish I grew up playing games like this. Although I did have a couple good scrolling-shooters on the TurboGrafx.
Man, I love you dudes, please never stop doing this!
You guys probably should do these forever...
That didn't age well.
@@floppyseizure8615 LoL
those worlds are in spanish, like bosque, which is just forest
Turbo Grafx was the SHIT!!!! played the hell out of it at my cousin's place. Also, Heavy Metal was an adult cartoon action movie too!
Really? I remember watching it when I was a little kid, and didn't think anything of the adult scenes... but that's the way my parents raised me.
Cool story, bro
The TurboGrafx is still the shit, and I still have 37 games for it! I was the one kid who bought it instead of the Genesis and I never regretted it.
It's been over a decade and you guys are still going strong. Congrats you guys
One I would recommend and it's made by Capcom and ported to Super Nintendo. UN Squadron because aside from side shooter, you also get sub weapons too and different planes.
Love that game.
UN Squadron was a highly underrated game
Play the arcade/MAME version; it's two player co-op.
I'd still recommend the Arcade/Mame port too.
Oh man I lost it at the way James says "I don't want to be one of Satan's dudes" lmao
It must have been regional because over here in Aus, those games were always called "Shoot em ups" in the 80s and 90s. It took me a little while to catch on that these days "Shmups" is just a shortening of that old phrase.
I miss James and Mike Mondays :(
Can't believe they're playing one of my favorite shmups EVER.
"You've got FULL POWER! Now just don't hit anything"
*cut forward* 2 health, 0 power
"Yeah you got fuckin' destroyed"
classic.

Awesome to see you guys showing love to some great shmups!
I love how you are still around after 2006!
*Axelay for the SNES!*
Awesome vid and game bros! :D
Guys, Rondo of Blood has a save feature and level select.
You guys should try Thunder Force IV aka Lightening Force on Genesis, the music is 100% pure genesis synth, the best genesis synth you'll hear.
Warrax it is good. That or MUSHA are neck and neck.
Thunderforce III is also up there, synthwise and as a game! So many great shooters on Genesis ...
One of my faves soundtracks also Alisa Dragoon
Not to mention the graphics, which are top notch.
This game is badass
thank you for saying that because holy shit this game is badass
And it's on Wii U? Neeeeeed.
Good shit! I love that you guys played this game!
Back in the day, I always called them GAMES. "Side Arms" for instance.
My favorite shooter on PC Engine
James, do more of the Angry Video Game Nerd episodes!
I remember a Johnny Turbo ad talking about this game and how "Feka's" CD system had a game that didn't come close.
Then the Sega CD would get "Lords of Thunder." (A game which I have a copy of for that system.)

awesome classic ; fantasy-style thunderforce
Summer Carnival '92: Recca is a fantastic shmup on the Famicom.
That and Crisis Force are the best and its a shame they never came out over here. Thank God for emulation.
Holy shit! You're right. I've never played Crisis Force. It's really fucking good! Thanks, dude.
I gotta play this game @ some point! Yeah I love those huge bosses in the games from that era too. Another good example of a game with huge awesome bosses was Ranger X for SEGA.
You guys gotta do MUSHA, lightning force, steel empire, and biohazard battle for Genesis
Biohazard Battle is unreal. We'll give that one another shot soon
I really liked the banter/commentary in this one
These guys are AWESOME!!
James C So true.
It's really cool seeing James truly enjoy this awesome game. Seeing the kid come out in him put a big ass smile on my face. Lords of Thunder is metal as fuck.
They make mondays awesome and always am looking for their videos
this game was awesome. I beat this game when I had a Turbo Duo back in the 90's.
We called them "Shoot'em ups" as kids, "Shmups" is a new thing to me. In Japan they call them STGs (ShooTingGames)
it's nice to discover a game in that way...and it reminds me when i was young with my bro' and cousins!
i like these guys. idk why. keep churning these vids out haha

You guys should do a full 30 minute James & Mike Mondays playthrough of Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy. That would be a fun watch
James and Kuwabara mondays
Woot. A good game on James and Mike Mondays to start the week.
Play "The Guardian Legend", one of the most underrated NES-gems imo. It's kinda like a combination of Zelda and shmup, and it works perfectly. And The soundtrack is gold, too.
Oh my gosh! James, you're going to be in Michigan next month?! I want to go to Astronomicon just to see you! That's awesome! ^_^

this games looks awesome love you guys lol
Great game, that soundtrack is superb!
Not sure if i just missed it but i think Altered Beast would be a great game to do for James and Mike mondays.
Mike, play Chroma Squad with James, I think that game was made for him!
For me most PC engine games are unknown. This looks difficult shoot`em up game.
When i was teen, i used to play Gradius with C64. Lovely game it was!
Reminds me of UnSquadron slightly such a badass game on the SNES! Amazing soundtrack as well! Just very brutal...
Phelios on Genesis was one of my favorite shooters, also liked Tiger Heli on NES. I guess I prefer vertical scrolling shooters over side scrolling.
OMG you guys HAVE to play U.N. Squadron!
Mos Def,my fave was the A-10 Thunderbolt
UN Squadron!!!!!
You missed UN Squadron, probably the best shooter on SNES. Also Legendary Wing on NES is great.
Played it alot growing up & liked it..... until I discovered the CPS1 arcade original that was 2 players + there was an arcade-only sequel!
Mike rocking a Dr. Bomb hairdo for a turbografx game
I have to wonder if it's intentional
One of my favourite shoot'em-ups: _Sidearms_
One of these days I would love to see you both do gynoug/wings of wor. The bosses in there are so neat looking.
I know this is an old video, but I always took "A" to be "confirm", aka, the primary button. "B" is like the secondary or "cancel" button, so it makes more sense for B to be on the left side on the NES controller.

I want to see you complete this! Seems like an awesome game.
this soundtrack is incredible. like what more can you ask for with a shooter than some guitar riff heavy metal?
You guys need to play U.N. Squadron. One of my top favorite SNES shooters
U.N. Squadron on SNES! Would love to see you guys play that!
Mike: "Its so important that you collect the money... and the power orbs."
James: "Meatballs"
Since you guys mentioned it, I love the Flash Gordon movie too! Well, I'm a huge Queen fan, so of course I do hehe ;p though all the other stuff in the movie, like the campy-ness, cheezy story, neat special effects, space battle action, etc. are all lots of fun too.
Damn, that’s why Mike left. James annoyed him too badly playing this game. He never forgave.
My favorite of all time was Thunder Force 3 for the Genesis.
