Wow, I been waiting for someone to react to Stevie Wright's Evie. And I must say with the words right in front of you, that you were so upbeat and happy during part 3. It's about Evie dying after giving birth to their child, it's the saddest song ever.
You need to see visual performances to realise what a gifted front man Stevie was.
One of the greatest songs in rock n roll! Australian classic, R.I.P Stevie, George, Mal and Bon.
Holy shit you did the whole thing. The song in three parts that predates Bohemian Rhapsody. Shame Stevie struggled so much with addiction, and it ultimately cost his life. Song written by famed Aus duo Harry Vanda and George Young (brother of Angus & Malcolm from AC/DC)
Pretty sure that Malcolm is actually the guitar player on this track too.
And as I said in a separate comment. These are the Harry and George that Dire Straits sing about in Sultans of Swing.
@@FarmWeigh
Did not know that. Thanks. Knopfler certainly was aware of Australian artists... it surprises me that so few people know that he named the double live album "Alchemy" after a painting by Brett Whitely, which was even adapted as the album art.
@@NealeBaxter Yes, solo on Part I, Harry Vanda played lead on part III
@@FarmWeigh Sultans of Swing is not about Harry Vanda and George Young.
Stevie Wright was previously in The Easybeats with George Young & Harry Vanda who wrote this for him. George’s younger brother Malcolm Young of AC/DC fame does the guitar solo in part 1; Harry Vanda does the guitar solo in part 3. This song was huge in Australia and I reckon it must be in the top 3 Aussie rock songs ever. All those guys I mentioned above except Harry Vanda have now passed away sadly.
They made some fantastic music.
This comes on in the car, the windows go down, the volume up, until I start to cry with the death of Evie during childbirth. Destroys me every time. His vocal is so desperate and emotional. It's the juxtaposition of the upbeat music to such lyrics of despair that make this genius
I never knew till years later that this is what the ending of the song was about. I was under the misapprehension that she and the child walked out of his life, lost love sort of thing. It now makes perfect sense right at the end when the piano goes wonky, it's him losing his mind. A much deeper song in retrospect.
Evie parts 1, 2 and 3
Boy meets and dating the girl of his life.
Boy marries and planning a future as a family with the girl of his life.
Boy mourning the death during childbirth of the girl of his life
As an Aussie born at the perfect time for music in this country, this is one of my favourite songs ever. Still have it on vinyl which I bought when I was 14 and am now 61. Legendary Australian song!!
Stevie was lead singer in The Easybeats, and their world wide hit "Friday On My Mind" is a classic song, you should do a reaction video to that. Stevie was a great showman on stage and the group sounded better live than on recordings. I saw them live in pubs in Oz and they were brilliant......
Evie is an Aussie classic. Like 'The Real Thing' parts one and two, and part three, 'Into Paper Walls' by Russell Morris. When I blast one out for the neighbourhood I always follow with the others. Loud.
Stevie Wright was truly a LEGEND here in Australia. The Easybeats and Stevie absolutely KILLED it when I was a kid. Stupendous sounds and monster energy. If you look at his 'Black Eyed Bruiser' song, you will realise where Bon Scott and AC/DC got their sound. ps Stevie and the Easybeats had George Young (older brother of Angus). Vanda and Young did a slew of killer hits. I have never got over Evie 1,2,3 - still one of the greatest rock songs in history.
It's hard to take when you realise Part 3 is when Evie is dying and the panic in the music is him panicking. The piano bit in the end is when her life ends.
Another beautiful Aussie❤️👣 this was such a big hit here in Australia 😊 everyone loved Stevie Wright ❤️❤️❤️ he was lead singer of The Easybeats,(great Aussie band) one of the guitarists was George Young, brother of Angus Young of ACDC🌏🪐🍀🌕🙏😎🇦🇺🌸🌴👣🦉🏡🌳🌴💕💕💕
Just brilliant - a life lived too hard and he paid for it.
Looks like Australia has more talent than most countries on the planet!
Awesome song.
Indeed we did, had talent coming from all corners of the globe, just wonderful
Its an incredible song! The way it transitions through the whole of her life.
it's so sad...He lost his love and his baby..the emotion Stevie shows is heart breaking....The drugs took over his life. A great loss. R.I.P. xxxx You should watch the live version ..so much better....at Sydney Opera House.
i was a teenager when the the easybeats were one of my faves in the 60s and stevie was the best front man.great memories of great music.and this song.he kills it.
I first heard this at age 15 I cried and cried. Broke my heart! Still brings a tear to my eyes!
Great to see your appreciation of Aussie 70s music. Much like America's 70s music, it is the best!!
My favourite Australian song of all time. Just ahead of Friday on my Mind by The Easybeats and These Days by Powderfinger. My daughter, who is now 38, was going to be named Evie right up until the night before she was born.
Hearing you say you're getting emotional at the end part 2 Matt, l'm thinking oh dear, shits about to get real. Wow, Stevie!! What an unexpected treat! This threw me waaay back! Oh god l loved this trilogy!! So did everyone. It's brilliance. Thanks Matt. Thanks for this Kathy, what a great request. Love it more. ❤️💚💙
Lol. Thanks Debra!
Debra, you are more than welcome! Love being a 70s kid and the Aussie music around then.
This is why don’t mess with the oldies in their 70s! We know real music. Be afraid if you think a cute sing-along will be “nice” in the nursing home! I can still play these dirty chords!
Great choice 👏👏👏thanks
Fantsstic song. He had another hit song "Guitar Band" which is a real rocker. Also have to slso ecommend Russell Morris with "The Real Thing" , a real early pyschadelic rock song
You just brought back my youth , this was my great go to song to listen to while driving to work , it was just long enough to last the journey from home to work . Stevie was the over the top flamboyant front man for the Australian band The Easybeats . If you haven't heard of them have a listen . Stevie unfortunately succumbed to an addiction and died before his time .it was tragic to watch I prefer to remember him as the cheeky full of himself young singer who had the girls screaming and throwing themselves at him . Thanks for a great reaction and for playing another Aussie icon .
Oh man, you're really digging down deep into some classic 70s Aussie rock with Stevie. I'm guessing Eagle Rock can't be far away at this point now :)
Can you send me a link?
@@mattcriscuolo1541 ua-cam.com/video/oQfAZVsz6KM/v-deo.html From 1971, the band is Daddy Cool. A great Melbourne based band led by Ross Wilson. He went on to form Mondo Rock who were popular in the1980's in Australia, have a listen to State of the heart by them as well.
@@iankearns774 oh yeah, Ross Wilson with his long curly hair and a fox tail. I think Matt might be doing Skyhooks next!
Do you remember when Pat Wilson did Bop Girl on Countdown??
@@DebraBing Yeah I do.Never liked that song much, not a big fan of pop music. That was '84 I think and I was a 20 year old hoon listening to the Angels/ACDC/Oils etc. Would have ruined my street cred at the time LOL.I secretly listened to Mondo Rock and a lot of the New Romantic stuff like Tears for Fears, Ultravox, Real Life. But not in the Kingswood though, I wouldn't do that.
@@iankearns774 yeah same, not really my thing. l wouldn't have admitted to liking Farnham either. I cut myself a little more slack now that it's obvious l'll never be cool again. It was more pub rock for me, The Sports, Chisel, Midnight Oil, You am I . And you could go and see free bands at the middle hotel on Saturday Arvo. Which could be anyone from INXS to Hunters and Collectors. I wanna do it all again so bad!!!
Matt...
Stevie was a real person...
A sweetie
A showman...
An inspirational
But...a nice person...
My favorite song of all time.. Imagine how you would feel when commercial radio have the audacity to play only part 1 or maybe 1&2... Boils my blood. Thanks Matt. Another Aussie legend I know you would Love is Russel Morris. He had several soft rock /pop hits in the seventies.. Over the last decade or so he has put our a string of blues albums. He still plays today.
Mine too
You don't listen to commercial radio to hear classics like this song! You buy the record!
@@davidmoore8397 I have the record. I was just saying how it is annoying when part 1 plays and it's never finished. I'm an ABC fan anyway.
@@briangill4000 oh, yes I get it now. It's a journey of a song, and the whole song has to be heard in context.
There's a live version that's amazing. This is my favorite song of all time .
Wow, this took me back. Still such an emotional song all these years later. Loved Stevie.
Really should have seen the live version - to see how much he was loved by so many.
Classic Aussie rock. This is really a masterpiece, brings back memories of when so many songs/music were great.
Loved your reaction
This has got to be one of my most favourite reactions. I love how much you're getting into the song & appreciating it as much as we do. Also a bit of trivia, the radio stations used to only play Part I a lot of the time because it was so long so people used to (nicely) complain about them not playing the whole thing.
I was at school when this song came out and the boys used to sing out “ Evie Let Your Hair Hang Down !” 😂😂
My favourite song of all time. Harry Vanda and George Young were legends. They are the Harry and George referred to in Dire Straits’ “Sultans of Swing.”
I found the Easybeats about 5 months ago and love the out of control Stevie. This is such a sad song. I read it's how Evie died giving birth.
Love this😁
The more you are getting into this song, the more you are reminding me of the late Australian record industry mogul Michael Gudinsky. He used to get into Aussie music classics like this - probably after a few beers. lol
Another one from the “Great Australian Songbook” you just had to be there.
Hey Matt thanks for reacting to Aussie legends. Sorry that the lyrics were wrong in one important verse that told you what was happening. At 9:45 the lyrics should have been "one's BORN every minute, every hour, every day". He's being told there are problems with the childbirth and Evie is slipping away despite every effort. Sadly Evie dies but I've never found out if the child survives. Sad, but it does happen.
Love Stevies voice
RIP STEVIE
Such a great song..........the Easybeats were soooooooo good and Steve was so talented. RIP man.
I wish more people were aware of Stevie’s music. He was so fabulous. One of the greatest Aussie singers. Thanks for checking out this song.
Aussie Rock Rocks. You might like The Saints-Stranded, The Angels-Am I ever gonna see your face again(live version) ,Spiderbait- Black Betty , Wolfmother- The joker and the thief in the night , just a few Aussie bands for your perusal. Enjoy.
Great selections
You might like Masters Apprentices who had hits with Because I Love You and Turn Up Your Radio. Their guitarist Glenn Frey later became John Farnham's manager. From the same era was Russell Morris who had a hit with The Real Thing, and Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs with Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy).
Glen Wheatley was the bassist and John Farnham’s manager.
Yay, you did the whole thing!!! I've been so hoping someone would start reacting to him!! A story in 3 parts: falling in love, starting a family, her demise. At the time (1974) this was the biggest selling Australian single of the year, also it was the longest (at about 11 mins) to hit number 1 anywhere in the world. Stevie is a legend here in Oz - got his start as lead singer for the 60s band The Easybeats, then had a second career as a solo artist in the 70s (this song was co-written by Vanda & Young, former fellow Easybeats band members who went on to be an iconic songwriting partnership - George Young being the older brother of AC/DC's Malcom and Angus Young). If you want to do more Stevie Wright, I'd suggest: Black Eyed Bruiser (1975) or maybe from his 60s Easybeats days: Sorry or St. Louis or Friday On My Mind.
A brilliant piece of music which brings back a lot of memories.
About time legendary!!!!!!
WOW!! WHAT A GREAT REACTION!
Stevie Wright is a LEGEND. Another great one of his is “Guitar Band” (I think).
Vanda and Young, who wrote this song released a couple of great songs as well. They called themselves “Flash and the Pan” in my opinion their best songs were DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN, and HEY ST PETER.
Thx again for a great reaction. You are the first reactor that I’ve seen do any of Stevie’s songs, hope you dive deep into his catalogue of hits.
Love 'Guitar Band'
Oh I love this song & you're doing all the parts . Wow . Glad you are getting into some serious Aussie Rock'n'Roll.
lol I saw your face when the lyrics mention 17 years old... Age of consent is 16 years old in Australia
Why not go straight to the start of Stevie and hit a bunch of Easybeats songs? 'Women', 'Wedding Ring', 'She's so fine', 'Come and see her', 'Friday on my mind'. Top Aus band from the 60s.
You MUST check out the live version of this from the steps of the Sydney Opera House
RIP Stevie Wright. From the Easybeats days with Friday on my Mind through to Evie, will always be remembered with love.
Well done
Great choice for stellar song...haven't seen anyone do it....proud Aussie RIP Stevie
Fun Fact: Stevie was lead singer of The Easybeats. Among other members of the Easybeats, the guy who started the band, is songwriter George Young. Brother of Malcolm and Angus Young from ACDC.
He and his songwriting partner Harry Vanda, also a member of the Easybeats, wrote Evie 123.
The Easybeats' 'Sorry' and 'Friday On My Mind' are excellent.
fun fact # 2 in the Dire Straits song Sultans of Swing Mark Knopfler sings the lines check out guitar George he knows all the cords. Then And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
in reference to both George Young and Harry Vander
Fun fact we knowthis already, why wouldn't we?
@@Ruby16663 indeed we've always known
Oh, for The Easybeats their biggest hit was Friday on my Mind; Another hit was Good Times and a cover of that was done by Barnesy & INXS (another Aussie group you should cover) . Vanda & Young was a monster songwriting and production team in Oz and many many people have done their songs, including John Paul Young with Love is in the Air.
They wrote so many songs for Australian artists and don't even get me started on AC/DC, such amazing music.
David Bowie coverd Friday on my mind and Good Times on his Pinups album. Such a shame stevie got hooked. I used to know him when he lived at the Bexley North Hotel. He was bankrupt and in bad shape. What a waste.
Seen this guy live ✌🖖✌
Stevie was the lead singer for the Easybeats - probably the first Australian group to hit the big time in Britain in the late 60s. They were amazing. Poor Stevie died a broken man but hell, he could sure sing a tune
That is the best way to hear this song!! Time to check out the Easybeats if you want to get more Stevie Wright.
This is such a legendary song in Australia. When you listen to it you enjoy it but it definitely puts you through the emotional ringer. Thanks for this, loved it and loved your reaction. ✌
Great reaction to what is ultimately a very sad song. Despite the upbeat vibe of part 3, Evie is dying in childbirth 😭 For a great tribute to Stevie, check out the live performance of this by the Aussie Supergroup, The Wrights
Hy Matt love your vids from Melbourne Oz !
Years ago I saw him at the Warwick pub here in Perth when he was trying a comeback. The show was great, it was before he went downhil.l
This is a brilliant song, it has the 3 parts to it and it is an Aussie classic..........
Defined Australian music i the mid 70’s
Great choice 👏
Welcome to Oz in the early 1970's!
Love Evie ...... such a classic, so cool you did this :-)
Classic !!!!! There was the long and short version. It was great to hear out at the pub - so much variety
Yes!!!!!!!
I absolutely love this song and loved your reaction.
Do yourself a favour and blast it on your car cd player, it will put you in a different atmosphere.
If you want to see more from Stevie Wright check out videos of his early band, The Easybeats, especially their classic "Friday on My Mind" voted in the top 20 greatest rock songs of all time wordwide.
1974 Sydney Opera House - live in front of thousands.... worth watching ... at his peak.
I definitely turn this one up nice and LOUD when I’m driving. This is an awesome song 👍
Just a bit of trivia. This song was written by Harry Vanda and George Young. These two men are the Harry and George that Dire Straits sing about in Sultans of Swing.
Another Aussie. I saw this band live. The Easybeats.
This is his solo career after the Easybeats.
Man Check out the Eazybeats "Friday only ind" Written by Vanda-Young when they were with the Easybeats with Stevie on vocals
Now you’re getting somewhere MC , delving into real classic Oz rock
Love this one. You really need to check out some Easybeats. Stevie at the front and Vander and Young in the band. Start of so much Aussie music, right down to Acca Dacca(Young Brothers).🤘🤘 Hey you may also want to check the first Aussie number one in England 'Pub with no Beer' by Slim Dusty.🤔🤔
Matt you should probably look at some Easybeats songs like “Friday on my mind”.
When coming to this video I didn`t even realize I`d been listening to this as a young guy....Sad to learn he`s passed a couple of years ago.......
How old was he when he passed?
@@mattcriscuolo1541 he was 68 when he passed in 2015
They stuffed up the written lyrics there “ones born every hour every minute of the day”
You kinda got emotional in part 2 and said it made you want to hug your wife. Then you started rocking out to "Before I know it, I'm losing you". I don't think you got it then (I'm sure you've read the comments by now) and realized when he said he was losing her, she wasn't leaving him for someone else, she died after giving birth to their child. Unbelievably sad.
Need to check out black eyes bruiser by same artist
If the stars had of lined up proper he could've and should've replaced Bon Scott.....check out Black Eyed Bruiser
Just wait until you realise Part 3 is about Evie dying in childbirth...
If you like a bit of late 60s have a listen to Russel Morris. You wont be disappointment.
part 2 reminds me of something randy newman would do
Stevie looks like Jesus in the picture behind you.
He didn't right it he sang it well.
Pat Travers.
next.. A mans mans world James Brown cover by cakra khan
Same song 1975 by Aussie Renee Geyer. ua-cam.com/video/t7WJp7613EU/v-deo.html
Karise Eden blows the pipes of the other covers.
@@cherylannb3161 Its all a matter of opinion I guess, I first heard it sung by Renee Geyer in the 1970's so that one stuck with me, you are talking about a lady who probably idolizes a lot of Geyers work and yes has a great voice. Kudos to her but Renee owns it for me.
Part 1 is great, parts 2 and 3 ….not so much. The 2 guitar players from The Easybeats wrote this song . But if you want to hear a better version of this song part 1 check out Pat Travers version on his Heat in the Street album……killer vocals and guitar 👍🏼👍🏼
The easybeats was another great band ripped off by their manager, so they folded, broke.
dont think the this bloke gets part 3 is about someone dying in child birth.
