Well said , UA ! When I was in England in 2017 ( summer ) , I loved the food. I used to go to The Cock Tavern in Ongar on a regular basis , and the ales were great , the food was tasty , the customers were friendly ( including their dogs ) and the lady who owned the pub was lovely , someone to listen to me and cheer me up when I was down . I wish I could go back again ! Happy new year , UA !

I lived in London 30 years and NYC for 15 years. A Salt & Battery is good fish and chips. It is no way as good as UK fish and chips, definitely much better than all other fish and chip joints in the 5 boroughs.

Here in New England, almost nobody does Fish and Chips English (batter dipped and fried); once exception is "Ye Old English Fish and Chips" in Woonsocket-it was founded 107 years ago by a Yorkshiremen (still in the family); it is very good...and their RI "Red" calm chowder is great!

I love that they have curry sauce on the menu. We tried this at a chippy in Ireland last year and it changed everything. It’s similar to Japanese curry gravy. Salt and Vinny on the fish and dipping the fries in curry sauce…you’ll never go back!

Fish deep fried in batter is actually steamed. The fish without the batter is extremely healthy. Originally the batter was not consumed, saying that if you don't eat the batter you are missing out big time.
I love fish and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce, up north they like gravy on their chips.

Looks authentic and a top tip is to add a bit of malt vinegar to the mushy peas and stir it in, which gives it a nice acidic flavour to go with the texture of the mushy peas and it's always a winner in my book.

I don’t mind shellfish , but I’m not usually a fan of fish. However I do love chip shop style fish and chips when it’s done the authentic British chippy way. It’s not fishy tasting as long as you get the cod. it’s just beautifully soft and flaky fish with crispy batter. The batter being equally as important as the fish. Because of the batter and the paper wrapping it stays the perfect temperature even after a longer walk back from the take away. If you go to a chip shop the portion size is huge and the chips along with the ones you can find in Belgium are the best I’ve found anywhere in the world.

i lived in the UK as well for a year (and went back and forth for long periods of time for an additional two years). I think chip shop fish and chips are what I miss the most about being there. And yeah, English food is definitely not bad and I don't really know where that rumor came from. I mostly hear that claim from people who have never been and just repeat jokes they've heard on sitcoms. Granted, not everything is great there, like jellied eels, but every place has something that a lot of people aren't fond of. If you go to England, you definitely don't have to worry about food quality.

I haven’t been in a while for it’s inconvenient to me but still there and going strong. In a touristy area but legit food.

I was just in London the past few weeks. Golden Union is my number one place in Soho London. Been going there for yrs. What you just had looked identical. The price you paid about the same as London except dollars vs pounds. So London higher priced 1.26 to 1.00 USD currently. You forgot to use the tartar sauce. In London they gave me a huge pile of chips. I could not eat them. No ketchup, so if you want that for the fries you have to haev your own. And I did take my food to go! I have tried Gordon Ramsay in Vegas for the fast food fish. Very good. Small portion but excellent. Much thinner batter. My recent trip I forgot to eat mushy peas. I like them. My wife calls them baby food as it looks like baby food peas from a jar. Love the videos. You do a really through down to earth job. Love the matzah ball soup reviews. It should be clear, not salty and have some carrots and celery at least for flavor. The balls should be soft and not rock hard either. If the liquid looks very bright yellow, its usually not good.

My favorite local chippy is Tredworth in Gloucester, across from the stadium. Hope it isn't too damaged from all the flooding.

It's definitely the only place outside of the UK I've been so far that is comparable to the real thing

The best chippies in the world are in Scotland. And within Scotland, it’s The Fishmarket which is near the harbor of Edinburgh. It helps that a fishmonger is part owner and has their store next to the chippie.
