  • Part one of my home DIY network cabinet build. Wanted a custom sized home network rack to tidy up and locate all my gear in one place and after searching and not finding anything small enough to fit the space I wanted to use I decided to fashion my own. Used simple 2x2 pine with dowel joints, nothing fancy, this first video shows the basic frame construction.
    In the next video I shall start adding power, equipment and network cables. This is a home build and is really being done on the weekends in my spare time, so no time schedule.
    After looking for wooden server racks not many are on UA-cam so thought this build may be useful to someone.
    Not sure how this will finally evolve but lets see how it goes.
    Thank you for watching.
    If Ubiquiti wants to donate equipment I can add this into the next video :)

    it's pretty much eco friendly server rack :) It's like one of the furniture manufacturing videos, rally satisfying. I'll go with the similar design.

    When you do the dowels for the side pieces, how do you get the holes to line up? Because you aren't drilling through both pieces of wood that time right? Also doesn't the second pair of dowel holes hit the first pair? Do you drill straight through the dowels that are already in there?
    Also may I ask what the exact distance ended up being between the sides?

    • @raysrcsandtech
      @raysrcsandtech  4 роки тому +1

      Used a Dowel Jig Kit, you can find them online, it has a steel centre marker, its like a cone shipped bushing that sits on the dowel, then you line up the second bit of wood and lightly tap the it together, this will leave a pin hole mark that you use as the reference to drill the second hole in the correct place, the kit also has the drill holding tool that keeps the drill bit straight and helps makes the holes straight. With some practice it works every time. Makes it look better than simply drilling the hole into both bits of wood at the same time, this way it hides the holes. Yes in some cases I would have drilled through a dowel, I let each set of dowels I did dry first before doing each step/side, some ended up going through other dowels and some didn't, if you plan it ahead you could probably do the hole so no dowels intersect, but its wood and with the wood glue I don't think it matters to much. I was very surprised how strong this construction method was, it feels just as strong as if I used screws.

      If you mean the inner size its 19 inch, the outer measures 22 inch, the size was based around the rack rails, I started with front side and made every measurement based of them. In fact I didn't really measure it I roughed out the front side first with the rails, placed in on the shelf it was going then put some bits of 2x2 on the shelf and marked them that way, doing this I ended up with a perfect fit for the shelf space I had

      Actually soon, it just needs editing, had some issues with fans that delay it a little. To be honest this video didn't really get much interest so I dint feel the need to rush out part two. Thanks for watching

      Yes, the same idea would work for other rack heights, just use your rack rails as your stating point. If you are building a much bigger rack say 22U or more, you may want to use more wood of larger dimensions to stop it from bowing.

    Didn’t make it through presentation. One of the biggest youtube letdowns is when you come to the site to see a video, but instead get a slideshow or some guy typing into a notepad document. There’s not a whole lot of difference from that and reading a regular webpage that doesn’t move.
