- If you can access military campgrounds (see link below on how), then you need to try one in Key West, Florida. There are now 3 to choose among: Sigsbee, Trumbo Point, and Truman Annex. Prices range from $22 per night to $80 per night depending on campground and site type. In this video we'll share about all three, but spend the majority of time on the largest, Sigsbee.

Lived in Sigsbee 69-73. Our house was actually where the campground is now. Such great memories there.
I was stationed in Key West 81-85. Had a blast. My barracks was in Truman Annex. We were not allowed to leave the base and go into town without a Buddy.
So glad they have these options for military! These spots looks beautiful!
It is a great benefit. We are lucky to have them.
Amazing, thank you so much for sharing such detailed information. I was born in Key West, but I was a child when I left and I have never returned. Interestingly enough I am a civil servant, and I was just thinking about looking up what kind of DOD jobs were available down there and I stumbled across your video here! Watching this just lit a fire in me, and I look forward to my return to my birthplace, thanks again for the awesome video 🙏🏻 thank you for your service!
Im glad you enjoyed the video and hope you’re able to get down there soon.
Awesome review... putting it on our bucket list
You should, Larry. It is a fun place. Always something to do and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the U.S.
Thank you so much for the video! So awesome!
You are so welcome!
Thanks, Sean! I'm adding this site to my bucket list.
Definitely!
We are at Trumbo right now, the weather is beautiful!
I have a video on my channel Camping Coastie
Thanks for the excellent review. I’ll be saving this video for future travel. We are currently at Camp Pendleton San Onfre campground overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lots of wave music.
Nice! That one is on our list. We stayed at Seal Beach north of there, but it’s not waterfront.
WOW! love all those lights. Especially the boats. I would love to see the Hemmingway house.
It was really cool! I don’t think there was anything we didn’t enjoy about our stay.
Your looking well my friends. Im glad your so happy. I was in the navy so I may check into my options when wife and i retire. Thanks for the info. Hope the dog is doing well.
Thanks for your service! Toby is doing great. He is getting in shape and learning.
Enjoyed the video. Have stayed at both Sigsbee and Trumbo campgrounds several times and will be back there in February. Absolutely love it. Very happy with the changes recently made to reservation rules since it eliminates the 5 and 6 month homesteading that limited access to a few very lucky campers. We rarely stay anywhere more than 2 weeks, so it's perfect for us. The Truman Annex sites are interesting. They may call them luxury but there's nothing luxurious about a dry site in a grassy field. The proximity to Duval is nice, but I don't understand those dry sites costing 4 times what the equivalent Trumbo dry site costs. Will be interesting to see if that gets adjusted after the see how many takers there are.
Over many years, my wife and I stayed at Trumbo and Sigsbee many, many times. I know we spent part of our winters in KW, and had a wonderful time. One time, at Trumbo, and lady walked up and said "I see you have Virginia tags." Yes, we said. The lady then said "I'm from a little town in Virginia that you've never heard of. She said: Hopewell. My wife and I laughed as my wife raised her family in Hopewell. My wife and this lady only lived a couple of streets from each other, but never knew each other. What a small world.
That's what we love about the military. It shows you what a small world we live in.
Thank you stay safe God Bless
Thank you and back at you!
GREAT news. I had not heard about new sites on Truman Annex!!!
I’m excited to see what those sites look like. I went to the beach over there and it is really nice.
Fantastic video! Thank you for sharing. We’re trying to plan for this winter and been struggling to figure things out. -Chris & Suzannah

I’m happy to share what I’ve learned.
@@ChickerysTravels we called today for a spot in December and they’re booked…but we’ve got the alarm set for 0830 on 1 July for some January dates. Fingers crossed. Again, such a helpful video. Thank you!! -Chris & Suzannah
@@HintonTheTrail We'll keep our fingers crossed for you too! :)
Thanks for the great info! I'm on the prowl for an RV now so my wife and I can sell the snowblower and do some traveling. Maine winters are getting old.
USAF MSgt ret.
Good luck!
Thanks for this! We’re headed down there this Friday! Check out Short Stay just outside of Charleston, SC. We spent a winter there and it was wonderful.
Enjoy! We’ll check out Short Stay.

Good info thanks. I just finally got my 💯 disabled rating. I will take advantage of this.
You can now extend your stay
Are you saying you can stay longer than 3 months
Hi Sean & Julie, We really enjoy your videos. My wife and I are just a few years away from traveling the states in a RV. We are also Veterans (retired) and are looking forward to staying at some of the military installations’ Fam camps. We were wondering if you guys have a top 10 or 5 list of your favorite military camping spots? Blessings & safe travels, and thank you both for your service!
Regards~ Ev and Evan
Hi Ev & Evan. Thank you for your service too! Our favorite fam camps are 1. Key West, 2. Fort Belvoir, VA, 3. Patrick AFB, FL, 4. MacDill AFB, FL, 5. Seal Beach, CA, 6. Vandenberg AFB, 7. NSA Mid South, Millington TN. They are all nice and have interesting things to do in the area. We have a fondness for all fam camps though because it is like being home.
Nice list of top military famcamps. I've been to 4 out of your list and have to agree, they are excellent places to stay. Looking forward to going back to Key West. Stayed at Trumbo Point...easy walk or bike ride to Duval street
@@RobC41 Glad you agree with our list, Rob and thank you for commenting. We may try Trumbo next time we are down there. I don't think there is a bad location between the three places available.
Great video! We're interested in the Sigsbee Campground. What's the best way to reserve a site? Online? By calling?
Thanks, Lee Ann! The best way is to call 1-800-navy beds.
I'm interested in the Truman Annex-which I believe also has a Navy Gateways lodge there. I can't get any maps to show where the Truman Annex actually is-can you help?
It is next to Fort Zachary Taylor. Put "Naval Air Station Key West - Truman Annex Lodging" in Google Maps and it should come up.
hello, do I understand correctly that as a foreign tourist you cannot use this campsite? We don't work in the military either. thank you for your help
You are correct. However, there are other nearby campgrounds you can use.
Have you ever asked why you have to disconnect your trailer when they have so much room there
We always disconnect so that we can level our RV.
Without an RV? Is there lodging on base? Navy lodge?
Yes, this article covers some of the lodging options on Key West in addition to others in Florida. www.poppinsmoke.com/military-beaches-in-florida/
How far in advance can you book it? Also, can a civilian spouse attend with her disabled vet?
You can book up to six months in advance and if you want to go between Oct and Mar, we recommend you make reservations as soon as possible. Yes, your civilian spouse can accompany you. You can get her a base pass if she doesn’t already have one.
Your name is Julie also? Just saw that in the comments ❤️
Is sigsbee worth all the bah for an e5 with a wife and toddler?
You can’t stay there permanently. They have a 90 restriction.
They have drastically jacked up the rates once again. In 2016 it was $13 for a tent, now it's $28 per day. About the same price as a bus sized RV. Greedy Officers and Civilians padding their MWR funds and salaries on the backs of retirees, it's disgusting.
$28 per day is extremely reasonable for Key West in my opinion.
@@ChickerysTravels It's quite reasonable, but then again it's government property and the people staying there already paid their dues.
Cuz chows are unpredictable and are very aggressive!!!!!!!
Not ours. He was the sweetest, most docile dog you ever met. And he was full chow chow.
