Plane spotting is just not the same today. I remember seeing so many incredible planes as a child in the 90’s. I had a relative who lived near SFO and whenever I’d go visit, I loved sitting outside and watching all the wide bodies take off and pass over. The classic 747’s (100’s and 200’s) were my favorite. After awhile, I could distinguish an aircraft sound alone.

Awesome footage. 30 years ago, incredible. What a great catch as well the brand new American A300-600R in the background when they were painted grey and flew to LAX, ORD and DFW. Had a lot of composites so they couldn't figure out how to put the classic AA chrome finish on them until a couple years after this was recorded. So much variety back in the day. Trijets, Boeing, Douglas' and a handful of Airbuses and other European makes like BAe, Saab etc. The 50s and 60s were more glamorous but the 80s and 90s for me was the peak of interesting jets and variety.

All of those DC10 and MD-11 passenger jetliners were a lot more common back then. Now, sadly, they are pretty much about extinct, unfortunately, along with the L-1011. I flew on one North West Airlines DC10 from San Fran to Detroit, and a few times each on a Delta L-1011 (ATL-TPA) and on an MD-11 (R/T ATL-LGW and R/T ATL-NRT). I'm so glad I got the chance to fly on those classic historic jets. I even flew on a Continental Airbus A300 one time from TPA to EWR. I flew on a part of history. It's a shame I missed out and blew my chance on the Boeing 707 and DC 8 though. I dilly dallied around and missed the opportunity.

Man I remember flying through here on United in those colors. i didn't live in a big city so seeing all those huge planes was really exciting. I'm actually transferring through there this fall, I'm going on my Honeymoon to Hawaii but we are flying American. I live in Chicago now, and the only 747s I still see are Lufthansas 747-8s.

That area from 11:50 to 15:00 Sandpiper St. Really miss that spot. Still mad they blocked it off after 9/11. It was amazing for catching arrivals to 6L on those rare days when it happened.

Air travel was so much better back then. Free meals, no cost for overweight luggage, you felt safe, and heck, the times were better too.
