I have been a studio guitarist and live performer for over 40 years. I started when Clapton was considered good, then Van Hallen changed the game and Via took it to another level. But Matteo has combined all styles and played each like a seasoned pro. Everyone marvels over his right hand, but his phrasing, touch, and overall technical creativity is mind boggling. To me. Matteo is the most incredible, consistent, and precise guitarist I've ever heard.!!! And he's so young!!! He is only going to get better. That is a scary thought!

Brother, preach! Those that want to hate because he's so young and his technique is so pristine, can't. Why? Because he's inventive, a master of his instrument, in general, and his ceiling is immeasurable. The blues phrasing here is delightful. It's a blues in G and he's making music all over the neck, fluctuating between major and minor key centers in a way that few can muster. Viva Matteo!!

      Classical? CLASSICAL???
      No.
The best guitarists is the world all play classical guitar but Mancuso is NOT one of them.
Here is young Cristina Galietto (she is either 18 or 19 years old here), also from Italy, playing classical guitar.

I've seen thousands of guitarist and shredders and I can say Mateo Mancuso's playing is something special, The level of phrasing, feel, tone, clarity and timing is out of this world. Who says you can't have both Speed and Emotion? I've never seen a complete package guitarist since Guthrie Govan entered the scene in the early 2000. He's like a mix of Holdsworth, Bonamassa, Eric Johnson, Gaton and Jeff Beck in one...And one more amazing thing, he doesn't use the pick!😲 The future of guitar is bright.🔥

So, if you completely put aside the technical ability, that phrasing and note choice in the relatively restrictive context of a 3-chord blues, is pretty mind blowing for someone so young. I have been playing for over 37 years (and I'm only 44) and most of that time has been spent playing the blues. While I am fairly proficient with my touch, my bends and my fretting, I cannot come anywhere CLOSE to that kind of musicality in terms of note choice. This sounds so fresh while many blues players sound so recycled. Amazing man, really.

I disagree entirely with your assessment, in fact his composition/musicality is what is most lacking. Al di Meola said it best, "But [what] he doesn't have yet - he's not a composer. Everything he's playing in these videos, wow. But it's against any music. How is that gonna fit in the music?" The answer, it just doesn't, almost nothing he plays is memorable from a musical standpoint. I can hum several Clapton, Hendrix, Srv or Duane Allman licks and you instantly know who that lick belongs to, this isn't a thing with Matteo.

    •  Місяць тому

@@ugosmith7529 Hi ugosmith! Well...I disagree with your criticism of Matteo Mancuso. To me , everything he plays is memorable from a musical standpoint. His phrasing is his own. His bending, attack, vibrato are drenched in authentic blues but then he takes it into the stratosphere ... because he can. All of his chops and technical innovations are put to purely musical use. I would love to here Matteo and Clapton play together. I heard him solo on Donna Lee and he's also mastered the bebop language playing through changes. These genres are probably ones he has visited and absorbed like a sponge (while others devote a lifetime to mastering them). King on this - I don't think he wants to be. He's much more than a technician, which is for me what a lot of the fusion guitar players are - not to mention the Heavy Metal crew. However, like almost everyone else in these Comments, I suspect when it’s time to stop searching UA-cam for shredders and listen to some music for music’s sake you won’t be thinking about Mancuso at all. Unfortunately, as of now.l, he isn’t the second coming of Coltrane, Hendrix, or any of their ilk.

He's amazing. Technically his skill is off the charts. His playing is super clean and he has very good feel,. This said, I would like to hear him put less notes and more pain into this lead because blues when it is good, kind of tears your heart apart. He blew my mind as he always does but did not make my heart ache. So do another one Matteo, not too many notes but make each note tear open the heart.

This comment reminds me of the scene in Amadeus, the movie, when the Austrian Emperor, talking to Mozart after the premier performance of one of his operas, says that it was good, but there were "too many notes." The kid is playing what he feels, and if he feels that many notes, it's the right number of notes, for him. But I agree--personally, playing that is this clean, while a marvel technically, doesn't move me like an overdriven Les Paul in the hands of a Jimmy Page playing the blues does, for example. Perfection is not really the point in this genre....

Well NOW I can tell them, well, I just did.

Makes me wonder where guitar is going to be in another 40 years. Amazing talent. Pretty sick how articulate his fast phrases are using fingers as opposed to pick.
