Now they spend a few yen to install some plants. To see handsome Monta so confused by seeing a few plants breaks my heart. Monta and Rola deserve a better life.

Yes I am glad they got some new enrichment but still how sad is it that a perfectly fine silverback is alone. No bachelor group no wives no children. They are social animals and these two have been alone for way too long. And from my understanding once they did try to introduce Rola and Monta why can they not live together? What is the issue?
Very true. Monta shouldn't be kept alone. This is the reality of how JAZA handles this critically endangered species. The biggest issue is the lack of experts and skilled manpower. JAZA is the sole responsibility for the current status of captive western lowland gorillas in Japan. Thank you, Karen.
If you read the longer description on their history, it says they tried and it made her ill. Perhaps a smaller companion monkey or deer type animals for some companionship would be something. Thank you Karin for the info-Rola made short work of the tree,🌴 lol…but she got food from it.😊

Two years ago, I had a chance to ask the vice director of the zoo in regard to the DNA testing to see if Monta was related to Momoko. The zoo hadn't done it, and it seemed they were not going to test it. I assume the reason behind the zoo not testing is related to how Monta and Momoko were imported to Japan.
