Well the original story is a Jewish folktale. The story is much more terrifying and the basis of the story is even more. In 19th century Russia, anti-Semites would attack a Jewish wedding party and kill the bride because she would continue the Jewish line for generations. The brides were buried in their gowns.
The butterfly is a recurring image in this movie. We see it at the beginning in the jar when Victor sets it free, to the train of Emily's dress sometimes resembling a wing when seen from above, to the ending. Looking at the play of the story, consider this. Emily was immature and naive in life, this could be considered the caterpillar phase. When she comes out of the ground with the veil, it could be considered a cocoon, representing her current condition. Later at the end, the butterflies represent maturity and moving on moving on. Taken altogether, this also makes Victor setting the trapped butterfly free very poignant, and also Barkus trying to swat it.
And also a butterfly symbolizes passing on to the next life, because of a butterfly's stages of metamorphosis which is why some people release them at funerals

Alphapkmn it's probably the dirt coming off of the arm. Because it was exposed to natural elements, dirt and bugs could've easily gotten onto the exposed hand. So when she rose up (or came to life) it could've fallen off... though it may have something to do with the fact that, when Emily came alive, she didn't seem to be dirt-covered anymore. So it may have something to do with that.

264aub Yup. Odd how it looked like wood then suddenly turned into obvious bones.
Alphapkmn it's probably the dirt coming off of the arm. Because it was exposed to natural elements, dirt and bugs could've easily gotten onto the exposed hand. So when she rose up (or came to life) it could've fallen off... though it may have something to do with the fact that, when Emily came alive, she didn't seem to be dirt-covered anymore. So it may have something to do with that.
