  • What's that? Last Recode is already out so a summary of the original quadrilogy is a little late? Nonsense! Let's watch ModalBeat keep the retrospective going by looking at the next game, Mutation!
(Let's hope the next video doesn't take me another 3 months)
Song at the end is a WIP made by Alroetsue. Check her stuff out! / @alroetsue

I think one of the most powerful moments in this entire quadriligy was something that wasn't even brought front and center. In your party list, Orca's icon just remains as a constant reminder of both what you've lost and what you're fighting for. It's an eerie feeling as you go through the game, gaining levels, while he just remains at an inaccessible lv 50. Then, you eventually surpass him in level. Just by a little bit, but then more and more. The feeling of "will he come back?" begins to fade more in your mind as you progress. Honestly, it feels like going through the stages of death. There's the point where I remember randomly trying to invite him, knowing it would do nothing, but just hoping in pure delusion that he would answer.
Despite being in the game for such a short period of time, his character really did leave a huge impact for me. In fact, his absence almost added to it.

My first experience with the game was walking by and seeing my sister playing infection when she was picking out characters for a party, and I said "Why not add that guy? He's like crazy strong!" And she said "he's in a coma, he was killed by a bugged monster."
His member address staying there works in so many ways that even the devs probably wouldn't know all of the benefits of it. The character is grieving, the player is frustrated and saddened, and in the same way someone who casually strolls by and asks about the person you've lost (be it coma, break up, etc) you get reminders from your device and from other people constantly. I really like that they kept it, and I don't know if FFVII or .Hack did it better. Because I have a feeling people out of the loop would have seen Aeriths missing portrait as a blank slate while saying "is that a good be the devs? Why is there a blank there?" And being reminded once more of the person you've lost.
Videogames do a good job of conveying loss and other strong emotions. Like it sucks seeing someone else on TV suffering, shit hits different when we all suffer with the characters. And that was all because of a 12 minute tutorial character too, not even unlocked until you're near lv 100. When I played outbreak, I brought Terajima Ryoko along because I liked having her and Balmung in my party so I get her level up to ours, improved gear, etc, and by the time Orca was saved even the absolute noob was stronger than him. And what sucks is I remember returning to RuneScape after a while, meeting up with a friend I made when I was like lv 30 and she was lv 6 and after being gone for a bit we met up and she was lv 118. Iirc I'm lv 78-79 right now, still got very high smithing and mining but God damn did my noob friend surpass me in every other way and it was bittersweet. It was nice being the "big strong friend" and they grew without me.
Orca got such a raw deal, I'm glad they acknowledged that in the spoof //Sign episode of Gift.

I've had a similar experience in Dragon Quest 11, now that I think about it. About 3/4 of the way through the game, somebody really important dies and I legit have not been able to finish the game since. I've just been mulling around, fighting metal slimes in that floating island dungeon as a form of progress, but even I know it's time to move on.
I almost wanted to ask my friend, who had beaten the game, whether or not the character comes back or not, but I know that's not how life works. You have to move on. All of my characters are a stone's throw away from level 100, so I won't even be able to use "I'm just grinding" as an excuse anymore.

IIRC Mia had a specific reason for wanting aromatic grass. I can't remember if a later game explained it or a side story did so I'm gonna go ahead and say *spoilers* for the rest of this: aromatic grass was a name The World used for either unnecessary or corrupted data within the world, and Mia was drawn to collecting it in a form of data cleanup within The World. If you don't know why Mia would be drawn to do that, well... thats spoilers too.

The trade group in the dungeon is similar to an event in the old MMO Everquest, where players really did gather in the entrance of a dungeon outside of one of the main towns to hang out and trade. It was very popular and well known in the forum

This is a cool bit of personal information. My best friend had the first game I found 3 and 4 at a garage sale and my other body had 2. We shared the games and obsessed over them too the point where I used Kite, my best friend used Balmung and our other friend used Orca as our names in mmos and I’ve been using Skeith as a username online for years. I get people calling me S-Keith all the time though

Goodness I wished they would remaster these games just for the chance to replay them again. The Carmina Gadelica music stayed in my heart and I remember feeling the dread when the appearance along with the music changed by the end. This video has been a fantastic ride back to nostalgia ^^

    You are my Last hope.
You are the only one that can
save me. Come to the dungeon of:
    Merciless Grieving Furnace.
    My Fragment.
    Be wary of Cubia.
I think it's neat she refers to Kite as 'Her Fragment' I love attention to detail of the story here, and the foreshadowing of the future.

Great video, just keeps reminding me why I love this franchise so much! One of the things I particularly love is how a game about a mmorpg hits such big stakes, and can fill the player with both suspense and (as you mentioned in your video) dread. It's a legitimately great mystery. Well, can't wait for your next video!

Man I forgot how many moments the first four games had that left an impression on me. Skeith and Cubia scared the crap out of me in the first game. I was mortified when the towns got corrupted. And going through it again, I dunno if its the nostalgia boosting it, but it still puts me in a state of awe.

mutation was my first dot hack, got it as a birthday gift from my grandma when I was 9. I only had AOL but didn't understand message boards so i just clicked a lot of "links" just to get to areas i needed to go to. That and I would just answer emails however I did, I was 9 what thought was I really putting into them guys like sanjuro and marlo were cool. A few years later i got Quarantine and thats as far as I went with the original series. When you get to quarantine i'll ask my question there because either I glitched the game out or I permanently lost the ability to call Mia when I could.

I'm SO late to the party... But gotta say, the whole thing where people hang out in dungeons is not weird at all. I did that a lot in PSO2 and so did my friends. Granted, some of PSO2's areas are great to chill in, but we can say the same about some of R:2's areas. The logical reason why it makes little sense to us is the technical limitations that kept CC from making those environments pop out, which they accomplished to a better effect in G.U. But hey, if they were to remaster or even reamster/remake the original quadrology, maybe they could make those areas pop out as intended.
