So true! I was living in Brasília, totally assimilated, acculturated, and one morning as I was passing a newspaper stand….noticed a headline: a labour strike by miners in BiH, my ancestral homeland.
It hit me like a ton of bricks.
I packed up and left within months….and went in search of my roots and ancestral and family connections., on the other side of the world.

My Mom’s family is not from Kazan, but from a place in the Ulyanovsk region called Staraya Kulatka. I’ve never been there either, but I also want to see my relatives who live there. I’ve always wondered whether Kazan meant what I thought it meant - the huge cooking pot, “boiler”. In Bulgaria we have the cities of Kazanlık (Казанлък) and (Tatar) Pazardzik. We also have the tradition of güreş (wrestling). I have an Olympic wrestling silver medalist uncle. As a native Turkish speaker I could understand most of the bits Tatar spoken in the clip. Thanks for these informative clips.
