I didn’t have a nes when I was very young, so my parents bought me a bootleg nes named Polystation. The thing is I always played this game without knowing their real name
Sure you can, just gotta try! Some games are simpler than others, this one is actually fairly simple to learn. I even made a guide for it. We often learn the games in a day for a couple of hours and then over time you get faster naturally. To get to the highest times and grind it down, that does take a fair amount of work and dedication to it. But just to try it out, it's not too bad!
I didn't even make it past level 2 as a kid. I literally had no idea what was going in the game and all the sfx and music just sounded so cheery. The knight sprite also reminded of those fencers from that Track & Field 2
Can I just say Im grateful for these videos and the speedrunning community in general, otherwise I wouldnt play my video games nearly as efficiently or enjoy all these details exploits and tidbits of info from literally every game I know and more! When I find out how, Im going to donate to a live event that I can really get into, because this is mt favorite thing for my favorite reason.
I swear, I think I'm nuts because I'm the only person i know who plays 8 and 16 bit games. To know that someone in the year 2018 is this good at this game is MAD!
You get used to it. The first event is a little shaky but it's usually not too bad after that. Muscle memory takes control pretty easily. For me, I've also done several plays and did choir and dance so being on stage is something I'm used to so that helps.
One thing I never understood about speedrun timing... why are you allowed to do stuff before the clock starts? Shouldn't time start as soon as the game software starts?
We could do that, yes, and we used to until this was discovered. The problem with that is if you just reset, it'll be different every time. And by that you could have one player just "accidentally" reset at the perfect time more often than not and gain that advantage anyway. You could lose that time or gain it and it's all random at that point when you don't. By doing this we can force the fastest way through and make it more fair among players at the same time. I view it a little like DS Pokemon speedruns do where you have to set the time and enter the game on a specific frame to get the right trainer ID and values on your starter. I know that's a bit different since it is technically outside the game, but the concept is the same. It is strange though so I don't blame you for questioning it, it's a bit of a gray area, certainly.
No, because you could just "accidentally" hit reset on that exact time every run anyway and get that manipulation. Not only that, every NES itself, we discovered recently, changes it as well. One of the runners' NES doesn't make him reset, he gets that potion to appear upon every hard reset (power off), which would give an unfair advantage if this wasn't allowed.
I remember both loving and hating this game. And the runner was absolutely correct, that level involving climbing the outside of the tower was indeed the most frustrating level in the entire game for me. I haven't played this game in a very long time, but I still have hate in my heart for that level.
So, if he needs to do two resets before he starts the run, shouldn't that be part of his run? Shouldn't the time start when he starts trying to manipulate the run?
I'd say that makes more sense, but timing standards are on a game-by-game basis in many cases, so if that's how all the runs for this game are timed then I don't see why it matters.
While it's true the collision detection is pretty wonky on those moving platforms, once you understand it it's reasonably easy to get up to the top... except that 3rd test...
Never played it. I just looked it up though. It looks a whole lot like Legend of Kage. The US box art looks like some muscly Conan barbarian guy but the character in the game looks like a Japanese ronin. Go figure! lol
not really the whole point of these kind of things is to speed run the game as quickly as possible if this makes the game faster it seems like a perfectly legit strat since anybody can attempt to use it to shorten their game time.
To me, no, but I can see why you think that. The problem is that means anybody could just fake a "reset" at that exact time on every "attempt" so that it sets it up for the real attempt they are going to do. Plus all your runs upon resetting will be different unless you power off and power on the game again, which most people won't think to do initially. Not to mention, that time would just be spent waiting around on that tree branch for the potion to appear because that's still going to be the fastest way through the level. May as well cut that out when it's in the game's coding.
It's not the damage it does that causes 2 gems to be picked up. It's Red gems. Pink gems are worth 1, Red gems are worth 2. The dagger picks them up with the same values.
The dagger picks them up the same way, it's based on color. Pink is 1 and Red is 2. The hidden door gems are always 2 with a thrown weapon and always 1 with body contact.
Love this game. Love watching the talented speed runners.
I never knew where to go in this game.
This was my favorite NES game back in the day. So good. :D
Yep. I still play it every so often, even 30+ years later. I can't say the same for its sequels, but this game is great.
I love how he frees these chicks and then just leaves them in the middle of an effing dungeon.
mgtow

Really got to admire the dedication of these guys. Something I wouldn't be able to do

I thought it was a good run dude. This frickin game. So frustrating. Nice job.

I couldn't remember title of this game so long. Thank you! My childhood:)

Thou hath discovered awesome game!
This game is the Dark Souls of NES ... just kidding :D but this a really good game, I played this a lot when I was kid.
it totally was
ALL TIME Top 10 NES game
I really don't understand how some of these guys can talk and play at the same time so well. I'd probably have to be quiet and concentrate.
I imagine that if you're streaming live on twitch, month after month, you'd get very used to it.
they're probably too good at it they can even tell you their last grocery list
After you do something enough times, it just becomes a background process of sorts. ...Except typing and talking. Those two never mix, ever.
They are need they are used to talking about “geeky” things

i love this game. completed it a few times.
The True Dark Souls Starts Here!
loved this game .. classic
So they started this clip with the ending credits to Kid Icarus rolling. xD
Great run. With the way death works on this game I bet it would be a good one for a newbie lol
Ah, the Maiden Galadriel, how fair thy name.
"Thou hath..."
That's some Shakespearean Engrish right there.
Loved this game. Never made it passed the giant spider.... and now I feel like an idiot.
Game was so good, no wonder i like dark souls.

I love when people master games. They know the in and outs of them. That's what I call getting your money's worth.
6:36 I mean... if he has to wait 20 seconds and reset before starting, shouldn't that be considered part of the run and counted in the time?
No, because you could just "accidentally" hit reset on that exact time every run anyway and get that manipulation. Not only that, every NES itself, we discovered recently, changes it as well. I just beat this last night for the first time took me about 3-4 hours?
I wish the background guy would talk about the game and the foreground guy would tell hilarious jokes about the dark ages. :P
You're all making these great NES games look like Atari games in length !!!!
9:38 "that's fucking weird" ooooooh he cussed!
I said "that'll work, okay", confirming I got it to myself.

I used to have this game. Iron sword too.
I like the first game because of its complex gameplay and I like the 3rd game for its relaxing simpler gameplay. Wasn't too big a fan of the 2nd game.

wait, you can kick in this game???
Doesn't it seem unfair that he's allowed to set up and manipulate the game via resets before starting the timer?
Unfair towards who exactly?

7:59 Saw this and the first thing that came to mind?
Obi Wan: "Use the force, boots".
Don't ask, need sleep.
never seen this game before! shocking
6:38
"Look at all that jewels!"
The birth of Taric from LoL confirmed?
The intro song was the best pat of this game. Bad ass classical music
One hard game right here. Sorry I just got back from sxsw austin and noticed this post and was like omg I was playing this on rpi
Huh this certainly seems way better than the second one
It sure is
The reason the axe picks up "2" gems is because that's the damage it does, I'm surprised he didn't figure that out.
Does kicking gems grant 3?
It's not the damage it does that causes 2 gems to be picked up. It's Red gems. Pink gems are worth 1, Red gems are worth 2. The dagger picks them up with the same values.
