  • Hey everyone in this video we are comparing the Purdy clearcut 2.5-inch angle brush to the Harbor freight Avanti 2.5-inch angle brush. We put these two brushes through a series of small tests tp simulate different painting surfaces and conditions as well as a big final test painting a full 2 bedroom apartment and using the avanti brush.

    For a DIYer the Avanti is amazing. With 25-30% coupons they cost around $4. You can buy four for the cost of one premium brush and at the end of the day the paint job will essentially look identical.

    Honestly me personally I would probably pick the Avanti brush. I used to work in a paint department, and we carried the purdy brushes along with other brushes. 9 times out of 10 most people would go for the mid-tier brush over the purdy. That was due to the prices of the purdy brushes. If you took care of the mid-tier brushes and cleaned them properly, they would last and preform just as well as the purdy brushes. I am by no means nocking the purdy brushes they are a great brush but some of use look for good brushes at a good or great price like the Avanti which my wife and I will be getting to do our future projects. This was a great video and great review by the way. Keep up the good work.

      Yeah i think for most people that dont do a ton of painting a mid tier paintbrush is great. The avanti is a great brush in my opinion. I am still using the one from the video and have another in my box and you are 100% right, the cleaning and maintenance are important to keep brushes performing. Thanks for watching I appreciate it!

      Very understandable and relatable from a business perspective. I work in general construction and am trying to find the best bang for the buck for the things we use. We used to use chip brushes from Home Depot since they sold them in packs of 15… but they stopped selling those packs and we’re recently doing a big project for these whales 🐋 and it has to be perfect so our quality has to raise…so long story short, I’m looking for less recognized brands that are just as good as the stuff we used before or are using now that can replace our Purdy brushes….
      Although the Purdy rolls 4 pack might just be the best bang for the buck still since the cheaper ones leave marks/marks

    Avanti is great for it's price, I used them for 6 months exclusively (I would buy 5 at a time and alternate). The only con I would say is that they just don't last as long. I noticed after a few jobs that the tip of the bristles start to get rough/ravel up and lose some cutting ability. I keep them in the truck as a backup now or when I'm doing jobs with oil/solvent and won't feel bad about tossing them when I'm done

    the avanti brush is awesome! The bristles are thicker than Purdy and are slightly shorter, sorta like a wooster brush. Avanti definitely holds more paint, but I found it to be slightly harder to cut a sharper thin line with & bc it's thicker it seemed to pull the paint off easily when trying to smooth the paint. I've painted with both Behr Premium & SW Duration paints, so the thickness of those paints might play a role. 🤷

  • @kenc4104

    Why use a stiff bristle Purdy? Isn't that an exterior brush? A medium bristle brush would've held more paint I think.

  • @nrehberg
    @nrehberg Рік тому +3

    Seems like the Avanti would be a good brush for painting exteriors. Since exterior paints dry so quick, the brushes are always hard to clean after a day of painting.

    • @BryanBuilt

      Havent used for exterior yet but you are right. Its cheap enough that if its only used once it doesnt hurt but the quality is good for the price point. I think This would be a great exteriorpaintbrush

      start trying out chinex brushes or chinex blended purdy...way easier to clean out and they are super stiff for stucco..the wooster version of the dupont chinex has been in the budget bin in the paint departments of homedepot lately too..havent personally used them but been giving them to my coworker who i wont pay full price for a brush for haha

    Problem with the test is that each brush needs loaded with exact same amount of paint, hard to be exact.... diy painter here. I cut in the same with no matter the brush. Purdy, wooster, valspar, whizz and zebra all give me same results, at east i cant tell a difference. I typically only buy purdy and wooster

      Yeah most of it is in the practice . Im the same i can take any brush and paint well but theres some brushes that make it harder 😂. Im the same i usually use purdy or wooster until recently when i started using these avanti

  • @SketchybrainD

    Do the clear cuts last as long as the pro extras Like that avanti Great at first but after a few cleanings it’s just not the same. There is a few brushes that work better than Purdys at first but don’t hold up the same at all. Purdy pro extras were the best over time that I found Picassos are awesome at first But use it ten times and it’s a duster Wooster has some that are the same way. Flare out like crazy

    I have been painting for 35 years and the only brush that comes close to a Purdy is a Wooster. The Avanti does hold a lot of paint and keeps a nice edge but they splatter paint almost as bad as a cheap roller cover.

    • @BryanBuilt
      @BryanBuilt  Рік тому +1

      Yes i agree purdy is my #1 followed by wooster. I think these are like good emergency or even exterior brushes or for someone who just wants a cheaper option

    I work with general contractors and they all prefer Purdy… problem is that I’m trying to save the company money so Avanti brushes or some other less known brand might have to be out go to.
    Wooster and any current Home Depot brush sucks for me these days… Lowes has the better brushes now lol

    I'm a Handyman, and I've been using Avanti for about a year.
    I absolutely love them. I recently bought a Purdy, just to see if I could justify the higher price tag. I can't.
    Actually, I feel that the Avanti works better. I can make cleaner lines, and smoother strokes with the Avanti. And with proper care, the brushes last a long time.
    Now I understand the whole "ethical" argument about buying local from USA, blah blah blah.
    But here's the deal; 98% of everything you own came from China.
    Your clothes came from China, the parts that make your car came from China, your furniture, coffee maker, cooking pans, kitchen knives, camping gear, and the nails that hold your house together all came from China.
    Do you really think that buying your brushes from the USA will put a drop in the bucket?
    And what about the fact that the quality is the same at best, or even lower than the Chinese brush? Why would you pay more for the same quality?
    It boils down to this; you can shoot your "fellow Americans" in the foot by buying from China, or you can shoot yourself in the foot by buying from the USA.
    Somebody is walking away with an injury. It's you or them.
    You also have to ask where the profits go. Does it go to the workers, or the Corporate elites, while the workers live the same low-quality life as any other worker at a dead end job.
    These "made in the USA" companies are just another deception.
    They rake in the profits, prop up their employees as a show peice, and crap on their heads at the same time.

    • @BryanBuilt
      @BryanBuilt  Рік тому

      Yeah, maybe... probably the majority of what we consume is now made in China but it's not going to get any better by continuing to buy everything from China when there are businesses that sell quality products here. And the same could be said about the workers in China? To each his own I guess. I'm not saying I buy everything I use "made in the USA" but I do try and make an effort to buy from Local businesses and American-made products when I can afford it and it is a quality product. As A small business owner, I also understand sometimes it just boils down to the price and how it fits your budget and that's okay too.
      I do like the Avanti as well it works well it's a good brush for a tighter budget and I understand some people that's what will work for them and their budget . Not knocking their products at all. I try all different types of brands and products and just give my opinion.
      Thanks for watching !

      If we want to have more stuff made in the USA we need to change the laws and culture to make it easier for businesses to manufacture here. The sad part is that the beurocratic nonsense combined with a lazy workforce makes the shipping fees and import taxes be less of a disadvantage than making it here.

    • @dthorne4602
