Don was my college band director for 4 years and a great friend after that for many more. Wonderful man, completely unique and brilliant. I miss our time together.
As many people know, Don Butterfield, featured on this clip, was the original "Tubby The Tuba". He was featured on the original recording of that piece, and was also an in-demand sideman in New York at the time this broadcast took place.
One of the other videos referred to this instrument as a "subcontrabass" trumpet, which I believe to be incorrect. I'm happy this video correctly calls it a contrabass trumpet, as it has the same range as the BBb contrabass tuba and most sousaphones. I play essentially the whole range of brass instruments, so I can appreciate the fact that it is difficult to play using a tuba mouthpiece directly after using a trumpet mouthpiece--that is, it takes a few seconds to get "oriented" to the larger mouthpiece. However, the large mouthpiece is necessary to play the low notes because it allows a larger portion of the lips to vibrate than is required for higher notes. If a small mouthpiece is used with a large instrument (often requiring an adaptor), one can play higher notes but it will be difficult to play the lower ones.
This must be the instrument now on display at the Musical Insrtrument of Music (MIM) in Scottsdale, Arizona. I finally got to hear it played. Thanks for posting the video..
It’s a trumpet tuba. Tube is 2 octaves lower than a trumpet. It sounds exactly sounds like a tuba lol. Lao rather hold a tuba than taking 3 humans to hold it lmao!
Brave HFBBIT, the word "tuba" does not belong with this instrument. And it does NOT sound exactly like a tuba. What it DOES sound exactly like is a Bb cimbasso, which is what it is, even with the novelty shape.
@TheRandomWolf well there is no universal standard for cimbasso design (so it might be a bit larger or smaller bored) and no accounting for different mouthpieces, players or ambient acoustics. None of which changes the basic point that instrument is not any kind of tuba. It is a big cimbasso shaped like a trumpet.
No because a bass trumpet is in Bb like a tenor trombone. A contrabass would be in F below that or Bb like a standard Bbb ruba. Sub contrabass would be like an F or Eb below that and this trumpet is in the key of Bbb so
@@ocularzombie6679 I said it sounds like a fart how's is that tone deaf? It's just an opinion. If you listen to a tubax saxophone the pitch is so deep until it sounds too muddy.
Finally, a trumpet that matches the size of a trumpet player's ego
That’s absolutely perfect!
I can confirm that.
Affirmative
I'm a trumpet player, and I approve this message.
The replies are so humbly honest. 🤣

Imagine if you had to march with this

percussion can hold it while playing
its why a contrabass/bass Tbone and tuba are created for
Marching with a Bb is already difficult enough (not that bad but I March uphill for band)

@@Alurpal80 Not really - the shape of the bell is different and creates a brighter, more penetrating sound than a tuba.

No wonder, that high F at 1:30 is really clean
Charles Mingus bio-doc introduced me to Butterfield. Charles punched him in the mouth… And they remained friends afterwards
That was trombonist Jimmy Knepper, not Don Butterfield

My volume was on 100 and it was still quiet
DorianTM same
Just because you had the volume up doesn’t mean it’s loud. I guess it’s from a long time ago in the 50s or 60s
All it needs is rewrapping, and this could be a workable instrument.
that would essentially be a tuba
Different family of brass instrument. Tubas have an entirely different bore. This could be a BBb Cimbasso or a contrabass valve trombone.
Literally just a tuba
@@yungchee1332 no tuba has a very conical and big bore and trumpet has a small bore and very cylindrical bore

Very interesting! It would be even better if the uploader would properly credit the performer by including his name in the video description above.
TV was different then 😐
priceless vid clips^^
It's actually just a tuba..... just looking like a oversized trumpet😉
Nope. Looking at the bore, this really is an oversized trumpet. A tuba is much more conical.
But it sounds like it.
it's still the same as a tuba tho
