12-hour Speaking Clock

  • If I ever tell you I'm going to do this again, please stop me.
This happened because of a programming exercise. When I'm training or evaluating new computer programmers I like to use the "Write a program that outputs the text for a Speaking Clock" exercise. I was doing this myself in Python recently, and thought "Rather than text, why not use video segments for the output?"
Getting the rough version running was easy, getting a version that stayed accurate over 12 hours took a lot of extra work.
Then rather than making a digital simulation I decided to make an analog "Tightwad Workclock" to display as an overlay, and record it running for 12 hours. That took 6 recording sessions, because my camera kept overheating and shutting down after about 2 hours.
Then after I'd finished filming it for 12 hours I noticed that the WorkClock has a "saggy second hand" between the 1 and 5 o'clock positions. You can count 30 ticks in that interval, but the second hand droops lower than it does on the other side of the dial, dammit.
It turns out that it would have been faster to make if I'd just sat down in front of a camera for 12 hours and performed it live. This version has taken about 50 hours of programming, recording, editing and rendering.

I had my doubts about this one, but your usage of classic narrative techniques really shines through! Masterful, engaging, and dare I say life changing. I only wish I could have been part of the live studio audience, who, after viewing this piece of art, must have surely achieved some sort of otherworldly enlightenment.

If you start it at the right time and set it to "repeat" you'll be good to go (well, until the first ad happens). 🙂
