Hey Ben, I know you're busy but if you could answer this question I'd appreciate it: I have Office 365. Is there any reason or advantage I'd gain of doing what you did here in this video? Please let me know.
No, this is for customers who don't want to or cannot use the subscription version. It is less feature rich than the current subscription version of the Office apps that is part of O365.
No, the finished installation files can't be copied as-is. There are loads of registry entries that won't exist on the other computer, the least being pointers to file installation locations and changes to file type assignments. If it runs at all, it may be with loads of error messages, and you would probably not find all functionality you should have in a regular install. What you can do is copy the downloaded installation files, xml configuration and setup program, and then just run the setup command again on the new machine. There should be no need to download it all over again. Only so-called "portable" programs can be copied to other computers without worrying about the registry. These do not use the registry for their configuration data, and also don't bother about where you have it located. Portable programs are designed to be run from anywhere, including USB sticks.
tl;dr Here is a comment on how to make the commands work, but also a warning about how this copy of Office will expire (soon) and is not intended for the use shown in the video. First: I notice a number of people have problems getting the command to run. I recommend that in the PowerShell window, you first type "cmd" and hit enter to switch FROM Powershell to the traditional Windows command interpreter, THEN run the setup command. If you create a folder on C:\ named "ODT", you can copy the setup.exe file and the 2024.xml file into that folder, then open CMD inside it, type CMD to ensure you are in CMD mode, then run: c:\odt\setup.exe /configure c:\odt\2024.xml Second: The Office demonstrated in this video is both a PREVIEW (beta, though it is function complete) AND it is time bombed (my guess until early 2025, like january-march). Microsoft makes this version of Office LTSC* available to volume licence customers (businesses). Microsoft provides these product keys now so that those companies that consider purchasing the volume licence version of Office 2024 when it is released (probably) in October, can get a feel for the product, document new features for employees and practice rolling it out to computers within their organisation. Microsoft released Office 2021 in a similar fashion and then Microsoft expired the product keys for that a few months later. It is possible that Microsoft will release an Office 2024 for Home and students and Office 2024 Pro for small businesses and individuals that prefer a "perpetual" (i.e. buy now, own forever) versions of Office instead of paying for a subscription. If that is the case it will probably be announced when or after Office 2024 for businesses get released. If you don't mind subscriptions, Microsoft also offer Microsoft 365 Home (for 1 person) and Microsoft 365 Family (for 6 family members) which includes significantly more OneDrive storage and the subscription Office version to install on PCs for as long as you subscribe. With regards to "for free", Microsoft does not give away one of their flagship products for free. The only free version of Office is the web based tools you get as part of OneDrive, which is free with limited storage space. This is the browser based version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Onenote. You can go to www.microsoft365.com and sign in with a Microsoft account to access those. They will store files in OneDrive. The other "free" Office is for schools that are part of Microsofts education program offering, depending on the agreement between the school and Microsoft, students maybe able to obtain a copy of Office that is valid during their studies (but is terminated when they leave the education facility). *) LTSC versions of Office is specifically the non-cloud edition of Office.
