I absolutely love the contrabass, it adds a type of texture to an ensemble that can't be found in any other instrument.
I am a brass player, tuba in particular. I have heard this piece done as a tuba solo, but sometimes it sounds muddy, and I am not blaming the soloist. The tuba blends where the contra shines through. Love it!
The intonation on throat tones, ease of hitting high notes, and agility on runs at the end are amazing! Having played contrabass quite a bit gives me a real appreciation for your skills! Your instrument must be fresh out of the repair shop as to sound that good.

Mouthpiece also depends and how you're trained in terms of voicing, this is still impressive though
My contra is from 1961.It just doesn't play quite right. I've tried fixing it myself and sending into the shop. It's a Leblanc model 342 which is the straight version of the more common model 340(paperclip) contrabass clarinets. It definitely needs new pads, but i don't know where to find them. Some of the tone holes are closer in size to those of a bass clarinet, but to use bass clarinet pads.

As a Contrabass clarinet player I love playing the extended c key it's so low it makes my lungs rumble
Got the same feeling with a Baritone sax with a Low A, on it. Took a lot to fill that with air also.
Who could possibly... have such intonation? It was so IMPECCABLE that it didn't seem like there could be 23 master clarinet players that all somehow got together to form a choir. I mean, it was so perfect, all of everything, that it almost seemed computer generated. But, I'll take your word for it. :)
Maybe it's one guy who recorded himself 23 times? Can't be too hard to play in tune with yourself...

Computer generated would sound worse. The only instrument that I’ve ever heard sound really realistic is a piano, and even then it doesn’t have as much expression.

I can’t how nice of a feeling the contrabass must be having the low notes rumble every part of your body and fill up the air around you making a sound you just dont get anywhere else

At my high school, we audition to be placed in two different bands. Wind Ensemble is the better of the two, and I recently made it as the only contrabass. Lol our director abbreviated it on the list as CB and people kept asking me if I play a Cb clarinet. Um na, I like contrabass better. :P

Tubatrek Wow, that's a lot of low woodwinds, compared to most bands. All your band needed then were some baritone and bass saxes.
We've never had any BBb contrabasses in my school's concert band. We have, however had plently of Bb bass and Eb contra-alto players. Last semester, we had two contra-altos that played in the bass section with the me (I play tuba). I think that next year, our director wants to have two contrabasses and a bass to carry the low woodwinds.
This brings back some fond memories...I played the Eb Contra back when I was in high school :)

Hey, they weren't useless 47 years ago when I played one in high school 😮 Back then, that was pretty much most high schools could afford in the clarinet family. Symphonic Band, our top band, for three years as a self-taught player. Baritone Sax in the Concert Band, self-taught. Drums in the Marching Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and the occasional drum ensemble. Started as a drummer at 10. Too cut throat to get playing time. That's why I taught myself the reed instruments.
First time I opened my folder it was all Tuba music sheets, bass clef. I told my band director the mistake. He said, "Sorry, forgot to tell you. Add three sharps and play it as treble clef." Me: " Oh, okaaaaay . . . "😵
@@sandraaleon2313 I’m an Eb Contralto Clarinet player, and I always get the melody in certain parts of the song, and it adds much more depth in the piece than you could imagine.

How näive I was in high school in the early 70's. I though my Eb Contra-Alto clarinet, and Eb Baritone Sax with a Low A key, was as big as the woodwinds got. It was just the biggest we had. Down side of self-teaching myself on school owned instruments. When I graduated, they took my horns back from me. 😭
Contrabass Saxes have been around since the 1910s, maybe earlier. Various contra clarinets, including Bb since the 30s. And of course contrabassoon and contrabass sarrusophone is always thrre.

Yea Alex, Its true, I personally play the Eb Contra-Alto Clarinet and the Bb ContraBass clarinet.
as with picking up any new instrument, the air necessary will be huge, but for contrabass instruments, double that demand, hope its going well!

Where's the Eb Contra-alto clarinet?
Unfortunately, many composers/arrangers tend to exclude the contra-alto when a contrabass clarinet is available. But I don't see a problem in writing for both.

Sure their is. Take Bass Horn (Tuba) music, add three sharps to the key, then play it as if the sheet was written as treble clef.
Yes, when i made that post i had made a mistake, when i had originally switched to the instrument i was told Contra Bass Clarinet in Eb at the time and i didn't realise that that was wrong until later on.
You can hear the rings on the keys of the contrabass clarinet from 4:20 to 4:30.

SycopathEraser You can directly read bari sax music. Contra alto music is Eb in treble clef, same as bari sax. Its like playing tenor music on bass clarinet.
