Sounds like Hasbro is tired of eating the cost of all these failed franchises. G.I. Joe Classified is making money hand over fist. Transformers is always in stock at big box stores. They need to end this abusive relationship with a formally hot girl and learn that they had the magic inside them all along.

I've pretty much been done with Star Wars because I knew the damage Disney would do back in 2012 (I was well aware of their treatment of Power Rangers and the Halloween franchise). I'm sure many collectors are the same between erasing the EU, the sequel trilogy, the horrid shows, and I could go on.

Lucasflim/Disney dictating that hasbro has to make products that everyone knew was going to fail and bomb 3 years ago is unreal- No one needed a crystal ball to realize that... They had a track record since 2015.
Too many scales, the 1/18 scale 4" Collector Edition Vintage Collection, the 4" kid grade figures, the 3 3/4 5POA Retro Collection, 1/12 scale 6" Black Series and that's just from Hasbro.

Transformers collector for 40 years here, if Hasbro go bankrupt, I wouldn't shed a tear. Quality, sizes, distribution and prices are all ridiculous now. I been buying robot series from Korea, China and Japan instead of Transformers the last 8 years. The only time I buy Hasbro is when they are on sale or clearance. Even then, I am being very picky.

Hasbro didn't even bother making a toy line for the last Star Wars movie that came out even though it came out at Christmas, the best time of year for toy sales! There are WAY too many form factors and scales and all that. I'm fairly certain that when they hit their peak, there was the regular figure line 3.75" which very importantly looked VERY GOOD in the late 90s and early 00s for what you were paying, two miniature ones (Micro Machines and Action Fleet) and they had just started Lego. There weren't SO many form factors.
Now they have a 5-point budget line 3.75", a larger black series 6", the normal scale vintage collection 3.75", young kids scales (two or three? Mostly around 3") action fleet scale (Galaxy Squadron), Hot Wheels, Lego (and a TON of them at that), funko pops (not really figures, but popular enough to take a solid chunk out of them), Disney was selling those metal action figures at Disney stores that were close to black series scale maybe 6" or 7", the SH Figuarts 6" for the hardcore collector ($60+ a figure), the 3.75" 1970s styled ones.
I feel like they lost sight. People weren't buying a million forms of them when I was a kid. When Phantom Menace came out, everyone purchased every character in the basic figure assortment (3.75") without question. Everyone knew they needed to have that, and that every character would be released in that scale.
There are still characters from the Sequel Trilogy that never got releases in 3.75" that got released in 6", or the other way around. The 3.75" figures also suddenly cost way more and looked WAY worse than they had in years past.
They did the same thing to Jurassic Park/World. Then we saw Mattel get the license, and frankly, they schooled Hasbro, IMO. Good prices, quality toys.
I would have purchased every 3.75" Star Wars figures from the new content if they hadn't looked like junk. So here I am, one of the remaining Star Wars fans, and they had, instead of getting a few companies to do well, seem to have just thrown the dart boards all over.
Today I'll sometimes grab a Black Series or a Figuarts. But no company really makes all the characters anymore, and it's too all over the place to truly collect Star Wars the way you could in the 90s/ early 00s.

  • @SGD_ToysDownUnder

Would Marvel have a similar royalty percentage? It'd go a long way as to explain why the Marvel and SW figures are so disappointing compared to the competition. I'd buy a Jada or WWE figure any day of the weak, twice on Sundays, before I touch a Disney toy without a sale.
Steve Ozer recently said he had to put it to higher ups at Mattel multiple times to get the WWE Basic legs updated, but he got it done and those toys have skyrocketed in sales under the Main Event rebrand. He's also said that updated parts are easier to get green lit when molds are being replaced anyway. We're getting new belts this way. This lined up with what you experienced with Mattel, management changes and you can try to get things done again.
I found it interesting recently that Steve and one of the designers were on the Major Wrestling Figure Podcast. Matt Cardona produces wrestling toys too, but would he be so small Mattel wouldn't consider him competition?
