Lucky you caught it so quickly! I've read so many persons complain about the Nexdomes for various reasons that I've ruled them out as a potential second observatory.
@@DeepSpaceAstro It can happen to anyone. Dylan O'Donnell loves his. I think it was Dylan who said: NexDome is like a Newton telescope. It's awesome after you tinker with it.
I wonder how well the Nexdome is going to handle a winter in Ohio? But, boy, I might put a tarp over the dome as a backup if you know that snow or rain is coming. I couldn't sleep if I had all that expensive equipment that might get ruined. It's amazing that you caught it after only a couple of minutes.
Wow... Thank the stars (no pun) for midnight cottonmouth. I've considered, as I progress along this journey, a Home Depot shed, converting the roof to a manual roll off. This may have solidified that consideration. Hope all is well with the equipment inside.
DAIN BRAMAGE! The bane of all electronic gizmos! At least it turned on the lights so the rain wouldn't blindly stumble around looking for vulnerable components.
Not me experiencing second hand anxiety when I watched this clip. You were so lucky catching this within 5 minutes. Even so, I hope no damage was done, and also the switch failure can be fixed (reliably).
Maybe turn off the power every night you aren’t imaging until you figure out a solution. Glad you were able to catch it in time. Is the dome connected to a computer program or is the sensor and motor just wired together with power, so there is no central control that can avoid failures. The sensor reports moisture but the central control sees the dome is closed already avoiding this issue.
Yeah that's what I'm going to do. I have a Wifi power strip that feeds the controllers, so I'll be turning that off from now on. The controllers talk to each other without a program on the PC. Looks like the limit switch that tells the system that the shutter is closed failed. So the rain sensor detected the snow, thought it was opened, and tried to close it.
You used about 1284.85 less curse words than I would have in a snow storm in the middle of the night. Sheesh man! Sorry this happened. Also.. Love that you said you got "Lucky"! Thats an... objective way of looking at it brother! Hahah
Oh man! You are lucky you happened to wake up just at the right moment. I would be really mad and frustrated too! I know it's probably another you don't want to do, but is there any kind of alarm you can add in case this happens again?
Jesus, man, that could've ended in disaster! And having seen your video where you built this thing, and the bullshit you went through with Nexdome refusing to fix their shit design, I'm sure they wouldn't have taken responsibility at all. Let alone compensate you for the loss of expensive equipment destroyed through their failure.
That's painful... so next thing: an 'opening detector' alarming you when it opens when not expected? It's fine when things work as expected but you loose trust in cases like this...
Pffff... you don't have good luck with the dome. Firts building it and parts that don't fit and now this. Hopefully no damage to the telescope. One suggestion; turn everything off when you don't use it so things can't go wrong.
Oh no...and yet , another reinforcement of my feelings about NexDome Products . I hope they're watching . Time to enact the "Trust Nothing" clause . If you still have a Scope/Mount cover leave it on even in the Dome . Best of luck drying everything out . Let us all know how you will solve this issue . Cheers Rich !
I wouldn't take a failed limit switch as an indictment of NexDome. Those are commodities and I'm sure NexDome doesn't make them. It does open the question of whether a backup switch would be appropriate.
Are you going to try and get a refund? I know you've had it for awhile but at this point it seems like either it's a lemon (which doesn't seem likely) or its just a very poorly produced product.
That is insane and glad you caught it in time!
Nice save Rich it could have been a whole lot worse, this is what worries me about fully automating as there's so many variables in what could fail.
Geez.. That indeed could've been a lot worse. Nice save!
Lucky you caught it so quickly! I've read so many persons complain about the Nexdomes for various reasons that I've ruled them out as a potential second observatory.
Yeah I'm made a bad choice...
@@DeepSpaceAstro It can happen to anyone. Dylan O'Donnell loves his. I think it was Dylan who said: NexDome is like a Newton telescope. It's awesome after you tinker with it.
Holy cow!! Hope the equipment didn't get messed up with that.
I think I'm good, but haven't checked everything yet.

It's been dry so far through some heavy rain. I do however, have a strap I throw over it if the winds start getting crazy. Just in case...
Glad you were able to get to it so soon after it opened!
Yeah me too!
And this reinforces my decision to not automate my Nexdome shutter. And to get rid of it within the next couple of years. Sorry you went through that!
Wow... Thank the stars (no pun) for midnight cottonmouth. I've considered, as I progress along this journey, a Home Depot shed, converting the roof to a manual roll off. This may have solidified that consideration. Hope all is well with the equipment inside.
That is more scary than watching a horror movie. Hang in there!

Rich you have to sleep inside the dome from now. 🤥
let us know about damage ( hope no)
No damage. Things look good
Holy cow!!! I don't think you're going to be cutting any celebrity endorsement deals with Nexdome too soon.

Not sure if I should give this a thumbs up or not! Glad you saw the problem and got the roof closed in time.
Talk about the luckiest of ducks
oh shit 😬 good thing you have security cameras in there omg
Nice Save!
If it was dry snow, no problem just brush it off, zero issues. Wet snow or worse, rain… oh boy. Lucky is right. 😮

I was surprised as well! lol
Oh man! You are lucky you happened to wake up just at the right moment. I would be really mad and frustrated too! I know it's probably another you don't want to do, but is there any kind of alarm you can add in case this happens again?
I have a WiFi powerstrip for the controllers. I'm just going to shut the power off from now on, when not in use.
That's a good idea.
Unbelievable! First you have trouble installing the NextDome motors, and now they open during a snow storm. What kind of a product is NextDome?
Yikes! Hope your equipment it OK.
Yeah the rig is all good!
My gosh! 😮
Thank god you saw it in time Rich. I hope the damage was just water nothing else!

I'm sure you're right!
That's painful... so next thing: an 'opening detector' alarming you when it opens when not expected? It's fine when things work as expected but you loose trust in cases like this...
I have it powered by a Wifi strip. I'll just keep it off unless I'm using it. Easiest thing to do
It's like when you have kids.... you develop a 6th sense so you can prevent real disaster
LOL. Still can't believe I woke up at the right time!
I feel your pain. Any damage to the telescope and equipment?
No the entire rig appears to be just fine thankfully!
Feel lucky, it would have been a total disaster if the door stay open all night long!
scary!
Pffff... you don't have good luck with the dome. Firts building it and parts that don't fit and now this. Hopefully no damage to the telescope. One suggestion; turn everything off when you don't use it so things can't go wrong.
Rig is good. Yeah I have a WiFi power strip for the controllers. Everything will be powered down when not in use from now on.
The Astro photography gods are looking out for you!😊
They sure are!
Noooooooo!!!!

Even if they would refund me I would still be out shipping costs both ways, and that wasn't cheap.
(somehow) you are a lucky guy 👍🔭
OMG
Bleep dude!! That was bleeping bleepity bleeped up!! Good thing you woke or that could have been a real bleeping mess!!
Lol
That’s awful
Aw crap
