Just to add something productive, Mount Olympus has been a national park in Greece since 1938 (the nation's first), and is actually said to be quite the nature hike, as well, with a lot of biodiversity on the mountain to this day.

Hi there, a nice general introduction here. Perhaps a little misleading to say that Olympia in the Peloponnese is completely unrelated to Mt. Olympus, as Olympia might be in a different place but was a most significant early pilgrimage sight for Olympic Zeus, the homeland of Heracles and the place where Heracles startes the olympic games in honour of Zeus. This site is also in close proximity to Mt. Lykaion in Arcadia, where it was said that Zeus was born and there is archeological evidence of a zeus cult there, at least since the Mycenean era. Besides, there are other mt. Olympuses in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. The tallest one being the one on the border between Thessaly & Macedonia, of course. In addition, Zeus is associated with Mt Zas on Naxos island as well as Diκtaio Andro on the mountains of Crete. In Greek mythology, both of these sites are where Zeus was secretly nurtured and spent his childhood, hiding from his father Kronos. So loads of Zeus cults on mountains, the oldest one perhaps on mt. Lykaion. Best regards.

I always found it odd that people act like Mt. Olympus not having gods on top of it in a literal sense to be some gotcha. We call Churches "the house of god" all the time yet no one thinks that if you walk into St. John's down the street that God is going to be literally sitting there in the pew waiting for you.

Also, Olympus mountain, although not technically difficult, requires a very good physical condition for someone to climb, as the elevation gain from the beginning of the hike, all the way up to the top is around 1750 m. So i wouldn't recommend it to families with little kids for sure or untrained people, with low physhical condition. I 've seen a lot of them taking their way back after realizing that the hike is difficult and demanding. The climbing to the top can also be tricky and dangerous depending on the weather conditions.

Given the role of Agon in the Greek cultural values, I agree that it’s impossible to imagine they didn’t somewhat frequently produce people who climbed the mountain.
The hubris & worthiness beliefs are also more than enough to account for this. Hubris is believing you *deserve* to be allowed to enter Olympus itself, which is not at all the same as wanting to claim Mt. Olympus.
Similarly, if you get up there and aren’t allowed to use the portal to Olympus, well, you aren’t a god, so it makes sensez

I STRONGLY disagree with your statement that religion is never meant to be literal. While you are correct that “spiritual experiences” rather than literal visions of the Gods are how most people experience religion, your statement is too broad. There are plenty of aspects of religion, both then and now, that were and are literal. To say that the Greeks did not believe that there was a literal war among the gods is simply not true. As well, miracles, natural disasters, and astrological events were and are taken as literal evidence of the gods. They are not merely symbolic, most of all among ancient peoples. I do NOT say this to demean them at all. Simply that I disagree with this characterization and I think your own religious experiences may be coloring your view of the past.

    Before watching the video:
In my understanding, when the gods are said to "dwell" in an abode that's reachable decently easy by their worshipers, the physical places are seen as more of a "portal" to the actual supernatural, divine dwelling.
A portal that regular people can't normally enter - unless the gods allow them.
But it still a place where you can get closer to said gods.
Note that this doesn't apply just to actual gods, but to supernatural entities in general: spirits, faeries etc.
I find this to be a common theme all around the world.
Of course, there can always be exceptions.
Now let's see if any of this will be in the video!
    Edit:
Damn, you guys even used the word "portal".
Now I look like someone who watched the video and after that wrote the comment.
Eh, I'm keeping it for the algorithm.

I remember when we were being taught in middle school history about ancient Greece and its mythology, that I actually asked the teacher whether Greeks would climb to the top of Olympus to meet the gods, since they knew they were there. She was really stumped by the question and didn't have an answer. :)

I think the end remarks were lost on the commentator in introspection. On the one hand he says not to take religion as literal, while taking mountaineering literal. In the rock climbing community a “First Ascent” (FA) is considered the first person to do it with proof and ID. Often times people will talk about a rock climbing route, and many people know about it and will talk about them doing it but the FA section in the literature will be blank because we do not know who to accredit it to, even though we know we may not be the first to have done it. I do not intend for this comment to come off negatively, but if one researches a topic and another unrelated topic intersects with it, please reach out to experts in the unrelated fields to enlighten you on how they use their terms.
