Police say Waze traffic app could put officers at risk

- Law enforcement officers want to put the brakes on a feature of a popular navigation app. It lets users self-report traffic jams, accidents and even the location of police. Carter Evans reports on why some argue it puts officers' lives at risk.
Well I'm sold! Anything the police don't want you to have is a great tool
the best one ever...lool
KilroyNBC I concur and also helps you to get around an accident!
Alexander The Mehh lol
KISS Fan Mac they should get rid of the police icon at least
Alexander The Mehh I think I want to be your friend, that's friggen funny
So let me get this straight...
Law enforcement is capable of and allowed to keep surveillance of citizens every day and that isn't a problem to them. Then somebody creates an app where citizens can keep surveillance of police, and suddenly it's an issue?
Yeah, either keeping unconstitutional surveillance over people is permissible or it's not.
Cops are more important than us. Without cops people would be breaking into houses stealing things and killing people. I feel the cops should be allowed too watch us. And we shouldn’t be allowed to see them.
Sergeant Yeet crimes still occur with or without cops. Cops are civilians like us and have no superpowers. Its pretty funny you make yourself lower than a police officer. That’s why we have a 2nd amendment. A cops job is to enforce the law and investigate crimes, not prevent crimes
Sergeant Yeet
And why should they surveil us but we can’t? Seems like you want to live in a police state
PandaCoasters bizarro world
PandaCoasters well the cops are kinda doing it to keep you
Safe you idiot
don't sit in one place trying to build revenue
steal revenue
2A Forever amen
2A Forever don’t break the law
CNN this is why your station won't exist when the younger generation get old
Oskar Bjornstad That’s not even the real CNN
if speed traps were really about safety...isn't something that gets people to slow down a good thing??
the reality is speed traps are about MONEY. this is why they have a problem with it.
Selma.
2901Hatfield.avenue ,
Patrick P if that was a case than a officer would ticket everyone they pulled over and idk about you but none of the police officers I know do that
The argument is that if people know where the police are currently sitting, they would just drive like they want to wherever waze says there is no cop around. Of course anyone who does that would be busted pretty fast since any user/civilian maintained database of police presence is not reliable at all, most people know that too.
norgi yup, as long as cops move around they won't have to worry about the app.. but they have their spots, like right after speed changes on a bend so it's more likely people didn't see it
P P Cops that do that most likely lose their jobs afterwords
It's ok that the cops can NAIL a speeder(by speedgun), but it's not ok that a civilian snitch a pig and publiced on waze, to let other drivers know..
Willem Budde when you say "pig" you lose your argument every time. It's unnecessary.
I see you like speeders
The only thing that's at risk is my License & Insurance by a cop with a radar gun
how about my entire livelihood and my ability to pursue better paying jobs. i am a truck driver with a CDL. i got a 13 over ticket in a dumb little revenue grabbing town. time for me to use WAZE and my brand new uniden R3 purchased right after i got that ticket.
Here in Cali they get you for phone on dash used for gps and tinted windows. Total price, $550
andrew donohue You gotta watch out for cops man. A couple days ago a cop pulled me over claiming I ran a light. It was a yellow light. And we are taught in driving school that you go if you can’t brake fast enough because that can leave you blocking the intersection. He also put in my ticket that it was rainy condition, and it hadn’t rained for hours! It was dry!
I downloaded Waze app right after this! Cops don’t care about safety, they care about quotas and bonuses.
Angel Gutierrez
My ex husband drove a truck for years & was in that exact same situation. Yellow light, couldn't stop in time, layed on the air horn till he crossed through. A cop at the intersection saw this, pulled him over & TOOK HIM TO JAIL! He fought it & won thanks to his dash cam. The cop claimed it was already red & lying on the horn wasn't the correct procedure in that case. Wtf? Glad I have Waze.
Lori Casey I guess cops don’t understand logic. Your husband did the right thing. The cops just look for excuses to get their tickets in. My step dad got put in jail for 2 days because he stopped at a stop sign for 3 seconds instead of 5.... that’s ridiculous. I see many cops running through stop signs and speeding. Can I arrest them?
I wish you and your husband safe travels.
More like officers don’t want citizens to know their honeypot locations; hard to issue fines and generate expected income.... wish more people knew about and contribute to this feature.
Same! I’ve wished for a long time now that more people would use waze & I tell people about it all the time for that reason. This videos kinda old & more people use it now than they did but the more the better. In smedium cities like my hometown not a lot of people use it, but on interstates & in bigger cities a lot more do. I love it!
Precisely
Their*
What they mean to say is.."Our revenue is decreasing and we don't like it"
Forrest Munden Y'all don't understand how tickets work do y'all?
@@steveharveysmustache3988 let see police give out ticket because u was going a lil over the limit then what happen after you pay the fees and the taxes and the judge etc and get 3 or more point and that increase insurance or hire the lawyer to fight for ur ticket and there also fees for it too. Either way it a win win for both the judge and the lawyer and the state's taxes etc over stupid small issue
My waze oinks when it spots a cop.. cool feature.
🤑😂😂
😂😂😂
They better not take the cop icon off that’s the only reason I have the app wtf
I'm thinking of getting the app but if they got rid of it I don't want it lol
Jake Mitch Well I will definitely tell you this video is 4 1/2 years old and I use Waze every day and it still is there! So we are good!
LOL
Gonna use this to ride a dirt bike to my friends house since I don’t have a drivers license yet
Tortuous Long bone yoooo deadass tho that’s exactly why I’m getting it too g 😂
The LA Police Chief is right that it might allow criminals to track police movements, but that's a weak argument. The benefits of this app clearly outweigh the risks. As pointed out in this video, having notice that law enforcement are nearby encourages lawful behavior.
Police just making excuses again...
+1
LivinLikeLarry510
What
They wanted their ticket money and @1:42 once again black people are being used (Fox News Surprise) BTW the black guy wasn't even on the highway or freeway.
Because??
it poses a threat to their revenue.
Police make no extra revenue from tickets, people arrested, or such.
whats going on lie
I feel at risk when I'm near a police officer.
Why is that? Because you think they're gonna shoot you? Lmao.
Truth!
Just don't do illegal stuff and you should be fine, is it that hard?
Elijah920 Well lets see they shoot innocents, HARASS the public, ruin lives i wouldn't be so comfortable near them either! They ripped my seat open in a BRAND new camaro "looking for drugs" just upset because they cant afford nice things.
Beast Zach Because there is a possibility that it might have drugs in there.
It’s a danger to there revenue.
oh my god can you people shut up, its not.
@@lumikera ok officer
@@lumikera what??? If it’s a “danger” to anything it’s absolutely their revenue bc that lil story about someone using it to track down & harm police was a whole lie.
It's a danger to their pockets!! Always use crime as an excuse to block something useful to the public.
I support Waze 100% they are doing a great job with their GPS.the police is always trying to make it harder for drivers (good job waze)
hhhhhhhh, less money for police..
Momo Fofo Told a friend about it a few months ago when he was driving from Palm Beach to Key West. When he got back he told me that it saved him from 4 tickets.
JeevesReturns c
That's not how traffic tickets work dude
Aren't officers always at risk? Kind of the point of being a police officer
killer probably also had fruit ninja on his phone too.
LMAO!
😅😅😅
Correct title: *”Ways to prevent traffic tickets and your insurance rates from increasing.“*
Sounds like the police are losing money again...
Sounds like an idiot assuming all cops are crooks again...
Keesin: It's not the police. It's a fact that governments require a quota for the police to get every month. If you really want proof, just look at how a large majority of officers try and be camouflaged when doing radar. If they were really serious about slowing traffic, than they would place there police car in plain sight, so everyone would see them and slow down.
😂😂😂😂
*“REVENUE IS GETTING SHORT ON US CAUSE OF WAZE.”* - _Police Department_ 🤣🤣🤣
More like they can't give speeding tickets lmfao
I love that this app allows me to speed on the highway! Saves me at least 10 minutes a day when commuting over an hour to work. Always redirects me if there is heavy traffic. Fantastic app!! Has saved me $100s of dollars in speeding ticket bills.
I use waze and I recommend you do too. I speed everywhere I go and waze always spots police for me. Thank you to all the waze users who report the police for other drivers. I try my best to report everytime I can.
How do you report cops on waze? I can’t find it..
@@zoeryckmans2857 There should be a little bubble on the bottom right of your screen click on that then look for the police icon with is a little police head
Knowing where the police are minimizes my risk
Waze is one of the best inventions since the Wheel. I can spot cops, speed cameras, car accidents, and pot holes a mile away
Omg they put their life on line when they signed up
Not having waze puts law abiding citizens at harms way of cops.....it’s our RIGHT..!!!!!!
How can this Put officers lives in danger ? Lmao people would actually try to avoid them
Yes & I don’t believe their story that “someone used waze to track down & shoot some officers” for even a second!
This is great. I wish police were "put at risk" more often!
Debbie S Boy, I sure wish they would stop putting themselves at risk for me. No thank you! My safety is my responsibility and I want nothing to do with these people. But let me guess they aren't going to do that because they want the government to hold my house hostage in order to fund their salaries.
+twn5858 AMEN, I wish all cops would go away and stay away. I'll protect myself and my family.
Noisy Empire ficked up but good point 😂
I love how all these people saying they’d be fine without police but then if police really left them alone they’d be dead
twn5858 That literally makes zero sense
It could be use positively also but the LAPD didn't mention that. For example, If I need assistance I can map them out and flag them down for help. To protect and service, right?
+William A I like where you're going but it would be faster to just call 911. It would be cool if you could click on the police and select call or message.
+guncluts That's a better idea!
+guncluts sometimes 911 is incredibly slow. I've been put on hold before and forwarded to an automated voice service. Damn terrible.
guncluts definitely wouldn't be faster to call 911. You'll be waiting for the dispatcher to send someone to you, which isnt the closest officer or first responder all the times...could take 15 mins or more...
@@TheSwordcluts I mean (& ofc speaking hypothetically as if the cops actually did serve & protect us) it might still be faster than 911 is some cases if you were able to or could send someone to a cop & you see that there’s one maybe a block over from your house or there’s one parked outside of your college dorm or some situations like that. & let’s be honest, that’s a LOT more likely to be the other use for this feature & to be a situation that would happen way before “tracking down & harming an officer” would.
THERE SHOULD BE NO QUOTAS ON GIVING TICKETS TO BEGIN WITH. MOST COPS ARE THERE TO GENERATE REVENUE FOR THE CITY. TO TOP IT OFF THEY HAVE NO DUTY TO PROTECT OR SERVE. YOU CAN UA-cam THAT.
I'd like to see your loved ones die, all of your money stolen, your house ransacked and when you try to call the cops to help they'd say "uhhh sorry we dont make money from you."
whats going on
YOUR REPLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I STATED. THIS GARBAGE DEMEANS POLICE OFFICERS IN GENERAL. THEY'RE NOTHING BUT MONEY GENERATORS FOR THE STATE AT THIS POINT. THE RED LIGHT CAMERAS ARE A FACIST SCAM.
whats going on
BTW, THEY HAVE NO DUTY TO PROTECT AND SERVE AS STATED BY THE COURTS. WHAT EXACTLY IS THEIR JOB AND WHY IS IT ON THEIR UNIFORM AND CAR?
@@peterl6095 Protect and serve is a motto, child, and the courts have ruled a police officer does NOT have to help you. Also, *fascist.
Period!!!
Wack. Keep it up Waze! I love this app.
Glad to see it’s been 3 years since they uploaded this video and the cop 🚓 thing still on the app
I’m from 6 years into the future & we still got it! 💪🏽
Imagine the time this police officer wasted writing that letter and doing that interview. Scandalous
mad because we can fight back boo hoo
That also means u too
electricix "fight back" you mean speed and put the lives of other drivers at risk?
Echo.3.T.A
Nobody in this world who drives or has driven can convince me that they have never sped a day in their life. Even 1 mile over is considered speeding. The app isn't it intended for speeders. Do you have the app? It shows where accidents have occurred, road construction & hazards, stalled vehicles, stopped traffic, roadway flooding, etc. I travel a lot & I like to know that when I drive around that blind curve, there's a stalled vehicle in my path.
Lori Casey reread what I posted
electricix is acting like they're going to break the law intentionally to "fight back"
These New York police officers dont like this app because they know if they don't hand out certain amount of tickets they get desk duty or shipped to another command or busted down in rank.
Trixie Mynx h
dharma wijaya not how it works maybe if they gave one ticket a year because at that point they just aren't doing there job
Dylan no that is how it works, if they go from doing 100 tickets a month down to 10 then they will get moved.. alot of the time it's not a spoken quota but it exists.
Jake Mitch well I’m 100 percent sure that’s not how it is in my county
How does this put officers at risk? Oh shut up!
Interaction with the police is more dangerous for the general public.
Just imagine criminals can use this app rob a bank or a gas station and then find a clear route on the app to escape
Just imagine cops shut up and just do their job without whining that every freedom must be taken away so their lives can be easier.
Its cutting into revenue.
"ItS cUttING inTO rEveNUE"
are you dense? try learning before you post something. These aint waitresses or waiters. they dont make money off tips, or tickets.
??
It is not more dangerous… is just something that helps anyone but them. I use it all the time and it keeps me informed and slows me down.
the police should park dummy cars along the freeways and problem solved!!!!
a3180045 wrongo
Ever see abandoned cars burn?
a3180045 back in my country they used to do that a lot they were fake cars.
And as soon as we knew they were fake ..... They would get stolen/ burned / moved somewhere creative ..
Random randomness no they would not it was in the middle of the highway who is going to go there at night with a tow truck to park on the side of the road for towing a fake cop car.
Wait, so let me know if im correct or not, but they are allowed to know exactly where we are when they want to, and put up hidden cameras to catch speeders, but God forbid if we know where they are..?
I'm surprised the police aren't taking advantage of this. They could just have a couple people every morning going out and making mass reports of police out on the roads. You see cop icons all over the place and you suddenly realize that the icons can't be trusted.
That would work but Google so smart they give you the option to say whether he's still there or not☝🏽️Or if he was there at all..so in about ten mins people would know it's false
Q
There's a reliabilty algorythm. You do that, and the app just disregards you. It realizes you are a liar.
Seen cops go to stop signs, speed up,and talk on the phone with no siren..its time to wake up .
Heck they can check out app to see if they have been outed by users
In the Netherlands, we have this for over 10 years already. And every full hour the radio news reports the location of the speed traps. Not a single police officer killed.
Love Waze best thing
choula whetstone k
p
Yeah, The risk is less revenue to the city/police/state
"Criminal" - Translation: a driver who thinks the speed limit is bs and so is the enforcement. A person who wants justice, not road pirates.
They are just mad because they are losing revenue.
All we gotta do as citizens is subpoena every bit of body cam/dash cam footage that had been taken along the course of their civil duties. That would teach them real fast.
This is bullshit they doin to much it's just an app smh
For anyone who dislikes this because it lets people speed, then read this comment!
The _POINT of_ speeding tickets is to make people drive slower, and the point of a reckless driving ticket is to make people drive more carefully... If they believe a cop is near by, they will drive slower and more careful, thus, doing the job, just without the ticket...
It puts there Quota At Risk lol
“their”
Whatever makes cops angry and uncomfortable i support to the fullest extent. I’ve never seen a more entitled, whiny, holier than thou group of people act like tough guys
haha - police officers at risk aka police departments losing revenues
Cops shouldnt be out running around in a free society
I feel really sorry for the police. They are constantly living in fear and everything poses a danger to their safety.
bro i hope this is a joke
They just don’t want ppl to know where they at with speeding tickets. They like to pull over ppl but I support the App
Man I'ma need that app
I’ve been using this app for about a year, and it’s saved me from a ticket so much. Please don’t take that away from me lol
They just need revenue
you sir are garbage
Waze can be a good tool for the police to use reduce speeding especially at motorway blackspots. I was told that the police in the UK use waze on the motorway to suggest that police is hidden around the corner when they actually not. This result in road users staying below the speed limit
Yep! & they would have thought of that over here too IF & ONLY IF their concern was about “safety”. They don’t care about the speeding over here out of concern for the safety of citizens on the road, they actually WANT people to speed so they can write tickets & search cars over here.
Bs cause they trying to make money
you sir are garbage
Nobody need an app to commit crimes, this is one of the most absurd things I've ever heard.
*little mustache men*
Sorry, but I thought police were supposed to make themselves visible to the public. I guess if it's costing them revenue, they don't like it...
It definitely puts officers at risk…
Of not generating revenue for their city.
Of not stealing money from innocent people
I didn't know waze was popular in the USA.
Makes me proud of my country.🤗✌
No it is not a danger it is the problem that the police get less money
If the chief really cared about protecting his officers, he wouldn't put them out on the streets for revenue collecting purposes.
You disable that cop feature and i'm not using the app anymore. Period.
legend goes that after the cop made his statement of not liking the tracking feature he went to harass a bunch of 8 year olds asking them where they're going, where they live, and what they're doing.
One time that I was too lazy to turn on Waze, I got a $500 ticket from a police trap. Now, I Always use Waze no matter what since then.
Every time a cop guns down an unarmed, non threatening civilian he claims "I thought my life was at risk. His ______________ looked like a gun." Fill in the blank. cel phone, wallet, bagel, candy bar, hot dog, etc. If the victim is empty handed " He reached toward his _____________ pocket, waistband, etc.
Not for nothing but the only reason I use Waze as opposed to another navigation app is because of the police tracking feature. I don’t normally speed but I still like to know when police are clocking my speed and where a speed or red light camera is located.
You have to constantly weight the value of information put out vs the risk. Well Mr. Officer. YOU have to weigh the value of some speeding tickets vs the safety of officers. If you feel the app makes officers unsafe maybe cops shouldn't be gouging citizens for revenue 🤷🏼♀️
what if the police are the most likely criminals your going to meet?
They are
This NEWS report just tripled WAZE downloaders, good job.
If someone wanted to harm a cop they wouldn't have to use this app to do so.
Waze 2015: Turn right because cop is on left
Waze 2020:*BOUNTY SET! ELIMINATE THE TARGET*
Just get more traffic cams then. Apparently people believe that getting a speeding ticket because of a cam isnt right, but if you can speed whenever police aren't nearby then the only alternative is cams. Also, the police should be able to avoid this by driving on the roads instead of sitting by stop signs. Either way, I still believe it could create a problem, especially with people driving in hov lanes with only one person.
If I can figure out how to "pin" a patrolman's location, and a patrolman can figure out how to operate radar and laser, he can also figure out how to "unpin" his location. Strange concept.
Every member of the driving public has had at least one close call when someone swerves from the right lane into the left lane, or because everyone is stomping on the brakes when an officer is on the side of the road. Since its the law to move over, some prior warning benefits the officers at least as much as the public, and probably more. Waze can provide this warning. Claiming otherwise is intellectually dishonest, and an example of low, or very low problem solving ability.
They think the app is tracking their location with gps. They don’t understand it’s just marking a location.
Puts police lives in danger 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
To bad there isn't a permanent building where police officers hangout. O' wait there is it's called a police station or a donut shop 🍩
2:02 ban guns.. decrease the power of government ... make people happy so they don't need to become criminals
How is this any different than having a radar detector? Which has been legally available in most states for decades now.
This is good to have Waze
The notification helps driver safety. Even if I'm not driving illegally, If the police are hidden and I catch a glimpse of them unknowing to me, I am then distracted/preoccupied and some may panic for no reason. Just the way most people react to police or anyone hiding. "Fight or Flight" response. Would they rather see me distracted and drive off into a ditch? Dishonest to the core, all about $$$ not safety. So obvious.
. They're not worried about officers safety. They're worried about lost revenue from decreased tickets.
This with radar detectors and laser jammers is probably the best way to drive
It DEFINITELY DOES NOT put officers at risk !!!! They are upset because they can’t give out unlawful tickets!!
It does not put officers lives at risk. People only report officers in visible site. It is not different than someone just seeing the cop there.
Even the playing field by exposing their cowardly speed traps.
Pointing a gun at someone and taking their money is only acceptable if you're a cop.
