  • Wild Wild West Stove Fix - Hot Tent Titanium Stove for Winter Camping - Damper Modification
Following a mishap on my last trip, I've decided to improve the design of my stove. I must say that it works much better now.

Hey guys. Thank you for clicking on the video. This is the solution to my creosote problem experienced during the last trip.

Awesome video Pat. Careful when using galvanized stove pipe. They release zinc vapor when they get hot, even after the burn off. I think gas stove is better when it comes to just cooking and getting on with it.

I've considered that. Apparently the zinc gets neutralised by the rapid oxidization which occurs at around 420 degrees C. It becomes safe at that time, once the pipe turns grey. Apparently, the only way to truly release the zinc is to burn the pipe at 2360 degrees C, which the stove never really reaches. The initial burn has to be done outside of course. In the video, I mention smelling the coating burning off.
I will do more research before using it in the tent however. Thank you for the heads up.

New to your channel today. I have posted vids on this same issue over the last couple years. I'm in the Rockies where we have lots of beetle kill and what I have learned over 2 decades + of stoves in tents is that the spark arrestor will plug even down low to the flame. Be sure you can remove it easily and carry a small steel bristle brush to clean it. I will admit I don't burn my WWW as hot as I burn my sheet metal stoves but I have the same problem with spark arrestors on the sheet metal stoves as well. Creosote is not our friend. Looking forward to seeing more of your vids. Thanks

I've only started playing around with these a couple of years ago. Prior to that, no winter hot tent camping at all. Thank you very much for the pointers on the spark arrestor. I will be putting a grinder to it to make the slot a little bit wider.

Hey man, nice video. I have the same stove and did the same thing. I have a question for you? I placed three screws with nut on outside of pipe and the actual long stove pipe assembly over what you basically just built. I noticed you placed the long pipe under the short pipe. Is there a reason why you placed it in other than moisture? This is my first wood stove W3. Is that standard to place in not over? And man do I love the wild wild West stove. I take that thing everywhere during my backpacking and pack out winter excursions.

I'm thinking that having the pipes fit together that way would make it easier for smoke to leak out (and into tent) as it is rising up through the piping. IMO top section over would be safer.

That's exactly what I thought but after testing it for a couple of hours on low heat and high heat and I can say that it's no issue at all. I'm going to be using this setup in my upcoming trip. Even with almost a quarter inch gap there still wasn't any smoke coming out. Only time will tell. For now I'm figuring out how to narrow that quarter inch gap mechanically somehow. From the inside of the pipe. Any suggestions?

@@WildernessBushcraft , you could try a few extra wraps of metal around the upper pipe to close up the gap. Use the scrap piece of galvanized that you cut away to do so.

    • @WildernessBushcraft

That is a great idea. I think I will.

@@WildernessBushcraft I still think the safest way is to have the top pipe over the lower. One inside the other in the direction of airflow, or in this case smoke flow.

Such a good idea. I’m going to do the same thing. I have never liked how flimsy it is. Thank you

This is such useful info mate. Totally invaluable for someone looking to do lightweight hot-tenting. Really looking forward to seeing how you get on.
Did you weigh your extra fitting? Just interested to know how much weight it adds.

    • @WildernessBushcraft
      @WildernessBushcraft  2 роки тому +1

The total weight is probably a quarter pound. A bit on the heavy side compared to the original but seems to work perfectly.
