Paddleboarding UK 🏄‍♀️ SUP and swim on the River Wey (dealing with anxiety)

  • Join me on a relaxing summers day paddle up the River Wey navigation in Surrey ✌️ It was the first time I had got the paddleboard out in a long time, but once I had remembered how to pump it up I was soon off on my SUP adventure down the river! The navigation is part canal part river, so it’s also a great spot for some wild swimming even though the water is not the clearest.
    I’m also talking about anxiety in this video, and how I try to deal with these challenging feelings when they come up. I used to be so scared of the physical feelings of anxiety, but once I realised what was happening in my body it helped me to just accept the sensations and try to relax my mind. I’m no expert, but if you ever feel this way, you are not alone.
    Hope you enjoy it and as always thanks for watching! 🙏

    Having panic attacks and anxiety is completely normal after going through a trauma like loosing Ms Nancy, and doing something like relaxing on the river is the best way to deal with it.
    Well done for not giving up and going home when you started feeling anxious. ❤

    What a beautiful little adventure, anxiety is such a pain, when I am healthy and happy I forget it evert exists, but when I am stressed and tired and pushing myself it loves to make everything difficult. I found Melatonin helps to keep my sleep patterns more structured and that reallyhelps me. And music is my mindfulness. Thanks for the beautiful video, lots of love to you!!

      Thank you 🙏 Yes you are right there, it’s easy to forget when you feel ok and then for me things can start to slide pretty rapidly. You’ve reminded me I need some more sleep sups though, I often take 5htp which seems to help. I think I’ll put some music on too, thank you! 🤩

    Good morning 🌅, Lovely to see the English Countryside, it is a great shame that the river are so polluted now, when I was a youngster I would go swimming in the rivers with my friends, I am now retired living in France my property as a river/stream it is very clear, the only time it gets murky is when there has been a lot of rain or storm,
    Sorry to hear you suffer from anxiety , you might find listening to chillout music, or meditation bells or bowls, where they chant, I hope you find some enjoyment and relaxation and relaxing journey on the river, France.

    I watched this yesterday, I was going to write to you then but seeing your heartfelt loss, hit a spot that you will understand. Several tissues later, a day later, there is only one thing to help you, get a puppy and start over, it is the only way. You will never forget your beloved friend, ever. It has been a long time since losing Dylon, he was recued from being put down the next day, I took him home and he was the best friend I ever had,. A hound but an Afghan hound. ❤

    That must be the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way to introduce you to the canal way of life. Many years ago voluntary work took place to restore the Wey and Arun canal . Peace and tranquility and country life are the best things to help you through life. Life in the slow lane is an ideal way to relax and let stress and strain fade and love life and living once again .Canal life has been mine for many years hope it will soon become yours

      It’s very interesting going past all the boats and wondering if people live on them. I certainly agree with peace tranquility and country life, I’m all about the slow lane. Do you live on a canal boat now? I’m not sure if I realised that from what you said before. If you know anyone with one to rent/houseboat so I could try out the lifestyle let me know!

I think it will do you the world of good, and give you something to focus on, and start a whole new chapter in your life, with new adventures. I think your anxiety will ease a ton as well. Take care of yourself. 🙂

      It worked for us when we lost our first rescue too soon. We knew what we meant to the dog when we got her out of the rescue centre and we knew more dogs like her come in every day. You naturaly question if it's too soon but life is quick enough as it is, sometimes you have to make decisions even though you're not sure it's time.
      We never forget our last dog, never. They all keep that place in your heart and the memories are still there. But seeing the joy of another rescue and living that happiness with them, adding more new memories, it is so worth it. And as you say we get benefit too from that companionship. It's win win.

Not had anything like that for nearly a decade - the one thing I put down to being the greatest remedy for me was getting out into nature on my own, walking for miles in the most out of the way picturesque places.

      Hey Pablo. I too can relate, I posted this by itself, but wanted to share with you. I jusy found something that worked for me, after 30+ years of dealing with it. Look up "Internal Family Systems" it worked crazy well for me even doing it by myself. Honestly, doing solo is why it worked. I had to look inward and basically talk to that anxiety inside me like it is it's own person. Show them the love and support you would show your best friend. Tell yourself. "I see you, thank you for doing your best to help me. I love you. Let's let calm and confidence take over." Meditate and use that as your intention and I know you'll feel a shift. If you or anyone else tries it, please let me know. It literally changed my whole life. Namaste. 😊❤

      This time of year is amazing. You have a period of 4months Nov/Feb that can be a drag. Everything has a price though. I get really excited when the garden stirs as I know it's only a matter of time before nature chatters and blooms. The long days of light and early morning bird calls set my clock perfectly. Then jumpers and fires snuggle my soul as the nights draw in. Not many people get it or have the time. The dark, cold and mud that follows resets you and makes you appreciate what has gone before and before too long will shortly follow. If it is something you would like to do and you get the chance, go for it. I know for sure it's been a challenge and I have been lucky. I was never afraid of failing, I was more afraid of regretting not giving it a go. We all have our battles. It's shown me you don't need a lot to be happy and at peace with oneself. A cup of tea, biscuit and a the heat of a fire and I'm grinning like a Cheshire cat. I do have to be careful though that living as I do on my own that I don't become too feral 😂

    Grief fuelled anxiety has been hanging around my life for years and I'm only starting to understand it now, and recognise how it affects me day to day. A lot of how you described yourself felt very familliar and I very much empathise. Glad to see you out and about and enjoying life and nature. It looks like a lovely river and calming place.
    Anxiety is horrid thing, and something I have unknowingly suffered most of my adult life with. I have only recently learnt to control and my life has totally changed.
    You probably need a drift stopper for your paddle board, which are set of fins that strap on the back of the board, and will keep you going in a straight line (though probably not cheap).
    Happy travels 👍🏼

    • @missnancysdayoff
      @missnancysdayoff  3 місяці тому

      Thanks, it was pretty peaceful and quiet that day very nice. I’m sorry to hear that, it’s definitely something that I think we need to kind of engage with and accept to learn how to deal with it. That paddleboard actually has 3 fins attached permanently on the back, which I assume are supposed to fulfill that function?! So I think it’s my terrible paddle ing, to be fair that is a very small board which make it easier to turn, but harder to go straight. That’s my excuse! 😅

    Another really relaxing video with great perspectives. I took one look at the water and was hoping you weren't going to fall in but then you actually went in willingly!! The ocean has to be a lot more appealing but then you can't really paddleboard on it unless conditions are perfect.
    As for going straight, modify your stroke to something akin to a canoe or kayak J-stroke. At the end of each stroke, just do a little correction - using the paddle as a rudder - and you will keep straight without having to make large corrections.
    At the end of the stroke, leave the paddle in the water for 1/2 second and turn it parallel to the board and twist it lightly in in the direction that will help you go straight. The j-stroke becomes seamless after a while and once you log 10km, you'll be a pro!

    • @missnancysdayoff
      @missnancysdayoff  3 місяці тому

      Thank you I’m glad you liked it! Yes I agree it was nowhere near as appealing as the sea but it was what was available and it was so hot! No chance I’d go in in the winter. Ok the J stroke, this definitely sound lie the answers and i will try it next time I am out thank you, 10km oh my gosh 😅

    A nice video and I like your energy. I used to do a lot of river kayaking in my younger days, and if you're struggling to keep your board straight, you may try keeping you paddle much closer to your board. The wider the you set your paddle in the water, the more your board will want to turn. Also make sure your paddle length is set correctly for your height. The good thing is there's loads of UA-cam videos offering help. Lastly, and you may already know this, but Viles disease in rivers and canals is a real thing that anyone doing this sport needs to be fully aware of the symptoms as it can be very dangerous when you're swimming, or indeed just in contact with the water.

    Thanks Tori. The nice hot weather on the video that day has cheered us up. It is a bit grey up North today. Just to let you know, that Debs and I got Max the Lhasa Apso (gardening gloves?) euthanised yesterday. He has been very poorly recently and would not have lasted much longer. He has been our best friend and beloved companion for almost sixteen years. He assisted with our mental wellbeing (and my mums) all throughout his life. The convention is to wait a while before getting another dog. However, I have spotted an unwanted adult dog on the internet and I am in early discussions with Debs. Best wishes Michael

      I’m glad to cheered you although honestly it was a bit much hot! I am so sorry to hear about Max. I am glad he had a long life but I’m sure that doesn’t make it any easier to loose him, your beloved companion for so long. I really am sorry you know I know how you feel. Well there are certainly many poor dogs out there in kennels waiting for someone to give them a home, and it’s great that you are able to do that if you decide the time is right. Have you ever thought about a greyhound. I hope you are both ok 🙏

This sends some of the water under the board which keeps you going straight. A bit difficult to explain but give it a go. You’ll soon be pulling on your dominant side most of the time.😊😊😊

    Good to see you Tori. I love how you accidentally caught a couple of dogs doing their thing very cute 😻. Yes it was very amusing what you said that the end about how the dogs will magically appear to knock over your camera, and the reference to 'effluent' 🤣, you are very brave to swim in a canal it's one place I would struggle to build the courage to go in 😧. But I love canals and your video took me back to when I was at college and we went on a week's residential on a canal boat that was a converted coal haulier so it was equipped with bunk beds and the canvas roof, it was great fun.
    It sounds like you're amygdala is running on overdrive 🤯 so I would definitely encourage you to continue daily mindfulness practice. It's been shown on MRI scans that 25 days of mindfulness practice is sufficient to reduce the size of your amygdala an increase the size of other parts of the brain. A reduced amygdala will correspond to a reduced experience of anxiety.
    When I was growing up having I had friends on a farm, it struck me as strange that they take the cow's milk for themselves but give the carves powdered milk. What on earth is the point in that. And then where does the powdered milk come from? The whole thing is beyond ridiculous. Then there was a company in London who were making ice cream from human milk, the mothers were being paid to supply the surplus milk. But this was quickly closed down by the council due to health concerns that the milk was not suitable for human consumption! 😳 So we're not allowed to drink human milk but it's fine to drink milk from other animals which again illustrates societies insanity. I know some people here might be freaked out about the idea of drinking human milk particularly as an adult but then why doesn't it freak people out the idea of drinking animals milk? Okay rant over.😅
    I do hope you continue with your mindfulness practice and I keep my fingers crossed that your anxiety will settle down. Sending hugs 🤗🤗🤗 (hugs have been shown in studies to reduce stress) I give a lot of hugs to my family and friends and would suggest everybody gives it a try. ✌

      They were cute, nowhere near as cute as my girl but they can’t help that 🫣 honestly if it hadn’t been so hot i don’t think i would have gone in, sparkling clear water is definelty far more appealing! The sea may also be full of raw sewage but at least them is more of it to dilute it 😂 that sounds like a very fun college trip though, id like to try a canal boat.
      I wish it was continuing the mindfulness practice, I’ve done it in the past but i really need to start from scratch, I’m not putting the right things first I admit. Thank you for the reminder, it’s crazy how i can know from my own personal experience as well as reading things as you have said that it is of great benefit to me, and yet still not just do it. Humans are weird.
      The whole milk thing is utterly nuts when you really do think about it. Surely the great milk ice cream makes a lot more sense! Absolutely nuts. Of course harvesting breast milk from others species that is produced purely and solely to grow there babies into big fat calves makes sense and isn’t at all disturbing 🫣
      Thank you ☺️🤗

    • @Melatiah
      @Melatiah 2 місяці тому

      @@missnancysdayoff 'sea may also be full of raw sewage but at least them is more of it to dilute it' 🤣🤣 that's true!
      Hmmm if I could take a canal boat and put it on the rivers of Europe that will be great, I'm pretty sure you could travel a new stretch of water every day for years without covering the same area twice.
      Believe it or not but 'not' doing what you know is good for you is actually one of the recovery stages of grief. For the same reason a person can stay in bed all day, they beat themselves up that they're being lazy or unproductive but the brain needs that time to process which ultimately leads them closer recovery. So don't be too hard on yourself. What you feed your mind is important and one way to do that in a fairly easy way is with a good podcast. Perhaps choose something on the subject of mindfulness to listen to, something that describes the benefits or people's experiences, even though you know that it can reinforce or enhance the desire to participate again in mindfulness practice.
      I remember speaking to a farmer who had twin carves that were orphaned and none of the other mothers took them on so they were fed formula and he said that their growth pattern was severely stunted because they were not drinking their mother's milk. It's also odd that human mothers would prefer in some cases to feed their newborns on formula. I know there are complications such as latching if a mother decides to feed her newborn naturally but this is the only way her child would get an immune system amongst other numerous benefits. Indeed humans are weird.
      Keep up the good work Tori, and always self-care. 😊🤗

It’s very hard for people who haven’t experienced it to truly empathise. I am so sorry about you dog 😞 I hope you are healing, and that i will one day too.

    I thought you did amazingly paddle boarding Tori 🏄... no imoji for that 😜. I love canals... so peaceful... most of the time anyway 🐾😁. Loved how you filmed the dragonfly etc... beautiful. Going for our first swim in the sea tomorrow... a bit late I know but I'll be thinking of you and how brave you are swimming in rivers, lakes and canals 🙏👍🥰😘

      Thank you! Ha I know they need some new ones. The canal is very peaceful bless you try t do something where it would be better if you were undisturbed 😅🐕 thank you, the dragonfly’s were amazing there! I hope your swim went well, it feels like forever since i was in the sea, it definitely makes swimming less daunting when you can come out into a bit of sunshine 🌞🥰🙏🤗

    You strike me as similar to me in one way at least. With the chat about meditation and mindfulness, you're rolling along the same tracks as me. I'm a Buddhist with Pagan leanings. Sadly, still carnivorous and a milk drinking machine. That can be put down to my metabolism.
    Love ya, Be well, happy and safe.

    I used to live near the river wey, fished it when I was a kid, was murky then. I can relate to the anxiety, I never used to have a problem, recently though things in life changed. It's not easy to deal with, but being in nature helps. Shame I didn't do something about it today.

      I wonder if it is more murky now, i fear it is 🫣 anxiety is a strange thing and can definitely crop up at any time. I’ve not being doing so great about getting out into nature either, but i try to remind myself that everyday is a new opportunity to do it.

    Hello Tori, I am a fan of your videos. Having lived with anxiety and depression for sometime myself I'd like to think I have some understanding of what you are going through. The loss of Nancy who you clearly thought the world of is a tough challenge to deal with and get over. I admire your strength of character in not rolling over and giving in which is so easy to do. It is good to see you still have your wonderful smile 👍 I am not a paddle boarder but I'm wondering why you not going straight when paddling on the left side might be that you may tend to have the paddle blade angled rather than square to the board? I am taking time out from "normal life" and have moved in to my new campervan for some full time van life. I plan to do a trip along the Devon and Cornwall coasts (north and south) soon and would like to try to swim more especially in coastal pools like you enjoy. Do you have any recommendations of good locations for a beginner? Keep the great videos coming and best wishes. Andy

      Hi Andy, I’m so glad you like the videos thank you. You’re right, loosing Nancy is definitely the catalyst for a lot of what I’m feeling right now. I want to roll over most days, then I remind myself Nancy would not think much of that. I will look at the angle of the paddle thank you! I hope you are enjoying things in your campervan? The main things at struggled to get a grip on with the coastal pools is tides- you need to be there at low tide to find most of these pools, an hour either side ok to but it comes back in fast and everything is underwater! So my top tip is to check that first. On the north coast it is relatively unexplored by me, there is one at Portreath I think but i timed that tide wrong, I really like cape Cornwall and the priest hole ☺️
