Garry Kasparov: Winter is Coming

  • The growing rift between Russia and the West represents a conflict between modernity and the past, according to chess grand master-turned human rights activist Garry Kasparov. For over a decade Kasparov has been an outspoken opponent of Vladimir Putin’s growing authoritarianism, but he has also been equally critical of the US and its allies for their unwillingness to confront Moscow.
    Now Kasparov is expanding his criticisms into book form: ‘Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped’. Today, with domestic opposition cowed, nationalism resurgent, and with a renewed military assertiveness, Kasparov believes that Putin’s Russia poses a threat to Western interests and democratic values that can no longer be ignored. How long can Putin maintain his grip on power? And can the West confront Russia without conflict?
    Garry Kasparov visited the John Adams Institute on December 12, 2015.

    This is a great man who speaks from a position of experience, common sense, compassion, and super intelligence. His position made sense then and really makes sense now. It was worth fighting against the Dictator Putin when this talk was given and it really is required now.

    I watched a lot of past conferences and talks of Gary Kasparov that are at least 5 years old, and I am amazed of how much he insisted on the danger of Putin for Europe, which is so relevant these days, after the Ukraine invasion. Sadly, he proved to be right.

    Gary is right! The US missed a great opportunity when it failed to support Urkraine. It would have had a positive effect on the Russian public opinion and opposition to Putin. It is still not too late if NATO will take a stand! Stand Up against Putin!

      @ Stephen Hall -Ukraine was not very stable in 2014 & the government & Ukrainian military was riddled with corruption . State was capture by the KGB too. It was impossible to support Ukraine or prevent annexation of Crimea by USA or NATO at that time. Hindsight is always rosy

    God I wish people would make sure the audio is equalised between both channels before uploading it. It's a basic thing these days. I really want to listen to this.

      For anyone wondering, the easiest and quickest way to fix this is installing an add-on/extension on your browser that forces the audio to mono. If you are on mobile, on Android i know this can be done on Settings > Accessibility.

    no american tanks in europe?why would the eastern europeans not declare neutrality and avoid NATO or russia?

    • @mosesk2216
      @mosesk2216 4 роки тому +21

      Because neutrality does not work. Russia attacked many countries during the past 20 years and all of them were non NATO countries. NATO is a defensive alliance and any country in Europe has the right to aspire to become its members.

    • @mesofius
      @mesofius 3 роки тому +20

      Ukraine tried neutrality and was invaded. Instead of posing asinine questions, try at least briefly looking into the fact of the master. Actually, Russia only invades countries that are neutral, it has never invaded a NATO member.

      Stop using NATO as excuse for this war, Russia invades Ukraine for three reasons
      1. Putin wants to get control over the oil deposits discovered in Ukriane and hates that Ukraine can be a competition in supplying gas in Europe
      2. Putin wants glorious legacy of reviving USSR despite the massive cost of human lives
      3. Putin is scared of a thriving democracy as its neighbors esp. with a significant population that can speak Russian and could influence his people to call out his kleptocracy

      Kasparov not only played top-level chess, he was also a politician who tried to run for President of Russia. He actually makes common sense. Russia would be hundreds of times better if he was President. Thanks for sharing this.
