Jerry Lewis married at 18 in 1944. By the time he was 38 in 1964 he and Patti had six sons. Can you imagine? That was a busy home. It sounds to me like those kids were disciplined with lots of love and good instinct, and that Jerry and Patti Lewis used common sense in raising their sons.
    RIP 💗 Jerry.

I think it was pretty much common practice at that time. The doctor is really talking about quite a new and alternative approach to discipline. Surely Jerry wouldnt have admitted to such a thing if he thought people would think badly of him. I agree its harsh but not unusual. Naturally, it wld be rare these days. He cant have been too terrible - two of his sons work with him and both speak honestly and fondly of him in Patti's book. They say he was a strict disciplinarian but not unfair.

Ive read Patti's book several times but cant recall her saying Jerry was an abusive mean moody dictator. Unfortunately for Joseph by the time he was school age his father was heavily addicted to Perdocan and was absent in alot of ways but many people have grown up with absent parents and worse. By all accounts his mother was very dedicated. Its very sad for him and Jerry didnt handle it well but he is just a man. Being a celebrity doesnt make you perfect. Hes allowed to have human frailties!

Jerry wasn't a bad father but he was a very difficult egoistic person but he loved his family. He was always under pressure with work.

I'm glad Jerry stuck to his opinion, because he was right on. I was brought up just like that and it has made me a much better person. I'm very thankful my parents loved me enough to spank me when I needed it. Jerry has nothing to be shame of by admitting he disciplined his kids that way.

I don't think Jerry was a bad father for disciplining his kids and giving them spankings when they were acting up. My parents did the same thing to me when I was younger, and I turned out just fine. However, I don't think getting bad grades like Gary did, justifies a whipping with a belt. Jerry should've just talked to him, and warned him to keep his grades up. Wouldn't call Jerry a thug for doing so, however.

He was just disciplining his kids like most people did back then. Lots of kids have been spanked when they were little, including me. It didn't do me any harm. It wasn't like he was abusing them. If you think that his kind of discipline merits him being put in jail, then a lot of parents would be going there as well. It says in the Bible that if you spare the rod, then you spoil the child. Not all children need to be spanked, but sometimes that is a better method than giving them a time out.

Yes I have read the book. Obviously with all the activities he had going on with his career, he was never really at home. He was a workaholic. I'm not saying that he was the best father by far, but he wasn't doing anything wrong by this method of discipline. And yes he was a moody dictator during those years, probably because his career was waning and he was in tremendous pain and addicted to percodan, resulting from his back injury in 1965.

And yes I know about what happened with his other son Joseph. Didn't he disown him after he wrote something bad about him in 1980's? They weren't on speaking terms after that apparently. :( Every family has its problems I guess.

@HurtTurtlesTreehouse If you beat them, then yes it's physical violence. But if it's discipline and nothing more, it helps and corrects a child. I went through it and all it never hurt me excessively. I think I was only hurt because the spanking stung and I was sorry I had disappointed my parents enough to cause them to do that. It doesn't scar a child for life if you discipline them in the correct way and spanking, when does correctly and not abusively, is the best way for discipline. In love.

I don't think he was a bad father at all, although i don't agree with the spanking, but I agree with Joyous comment that it was a common practice at that time, and Jerry thought he was doing the best for his kids.

I agree with Jerry 100%. How do you reason with a child? We are all born wanting our own way. Only something physical will help them to truly understand and you most definitely make sure you love and hug the child afterwards! I was brought up that way and I love my parents more than anything. I'm still being taught, but I learned enough when I was younger so that spanking is no longer used. Now that I have been disciplined when I was a child, I can be talked to and reasoned with as a teenager.

Many specialists, allow power with children over discipline.
Expectations for proper behaviour are crucial.

"Only something physical will help them to truly understand"
At first, I was just going to reply: "That makes no sense at all." But, on second thought, it's more accurate to say that "something physical" will teach them to understand that physical violence is a valid means of coercing others into bending to your will. The results of this marvelous belief can be seen in the human race's long history of wars, lynchings, gangland extortion, terrorism, and a host of other blights on society.

why is Jerry on this show?

    • @Donazify
      @Donazify  11 років тому

Good question. It is kind of random to have him on there. But he appeared on many talk shows throughout the 60's-90's.

The doctor could have been a peace activist in the 1960,s ?
