Once, when Julius Caesar was giving a speech to the Senate he received a letter. Cato, one of his main political rivals, insisted he read it out loud, believing it was part of some conspiracy. After a bit of hesitation Julius decided to read it.
It was a love letter from Cato's sister.

In the 80s the cia really loved funding nicaraguan rebels called the contras. One problem: the contras got a LOT of money from the cocaine trade. Congress passed a law to stop cia support for the contras, but the cia really didn’t want nicaragua to be socialist. SO they did the only reasonable action and invented crack cocaine and peddled it in the san fransisco bay area to keep sending money to the contras

When the Aztecs settled in the place where Tenochtitlan would be, there was already a tribe there. They welcomed the Aztecs to stay and the chief gave them his daughter in marriage. The next day the Aztec delegation came back to the chieftain, but the daughter was nowhere to be seen. The chief then noticed their priest was wrapped in a strange type of leather. He realized in horror the Aztecs had killed and skinned his daughter as a sacrifice, there was a fight in which the Aztecs won. They enslaved the rest of the tribe and took over what became Tenochtitlan .
Couple centuries later when Cortez came, the surrounding villagers hated the Aztecs so much that 100,000 warriors immediately joined him.

During WW2 a Maltese fascist sympathiser studying at the University of Rome offered his services as a spy to Italy and was sent to Malta to infiltrate the local administration and collect information for Italian Intelligence. He was sent to Malta on a speed boat and dropped off at the southwestern part of the Island, which is notorious for having extremely high cliffs, and he had no way of actually getting onto the island properly.
After his supplies were washed away by the sea, he was found by a British patrol boat and sent to a police station to be interrogated, but when a friend of his working at said police station recognised him they realised his intentions as a spy and was subsequently executed.
Bro was sent to the worst part of the island they could have taken him to, lost his supplies, had to hail a patrol boat to help and then was executed after a friend recognised him as a fascist. Probably one of the worst spy missions I've ever heard.

There is a settlement within West Virginia called Vulcan that was once a really successful mining settlement until it ran out of general investors interest and became very impoverished. That settlement was relatively isolated where the only way to get into that village was through a rope bridge and it was so neglected by the American authorities that the bridge eventually collapsed and now the city was isolated. The community of that settlement had tried to contact the authorities that was met with little to no answer so the mayor of that settlement sent a letter to the Soviet Union requesting humanitarian aid and funds to fix and improve the infrastructure of that settlement. The Soviets accepted it and sent aid in hopes to mock the US government for incompetence. Now knowing this was Cold War and Red Scare was on its height an outrage happened across West Virginia threatening the settlement with threats that involved either violence against the inhabitants or whatever infrastructure built there would be bombed or damaged beyond use. So the Soviets sent down a journalist to the US to convey an survey of the inhabitants living in Vulcan over what they think of the situation and demanded the US government that if Vulcan does not receive the needs of that community they'll make sure to send any aid by any means necessary (or smth like that I'm going through memory). And after that the US finally built a proper bridge for Vulcan and everyone lived happily ever after 😊
edit: Vulcan is within West Virginia not Virginia

In Australia during the Victorian Era an explorer named Frank Hann decided to go on an adventure into the heartland of Australia. He, and many others, believed that Australia was home to an inland sea located roughly in the North West of the continent, and so he had decided to try and discover this sea. He would eventually find a small river, and believing it would lead to a large lake, followed it all the way to a small dried up lake; he was so disappointed that he would name the lake "Lake Disappointment."

Uhhh first history fact that comes to mind is one related to my homeland Catalonia:
During the reign of Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II, he hired a Catalan mercenary company known as the “Almogàvers” to fight against the Turkish invaders from Anatolia.
After a series of, let’s say, disagreements between the Basileus and Roger de la Flor (the mercenary captain), the first presumably had the latter killed; which made the rest of the company go absolutely apeshit.
The Almogàvers sacked and plundered both cities and countryside and would remain an issue for several years after the murder of their leader; even going as far as to conquer the city of Athens and hand it over to the Aragonese king in 1311.
What I’m getting at is that these random Catalan mercs wrecked so much shit that to this day, some 700 years later, the word “Catalan” is used as an insult in both Greece and Albania; which I find pretty funny.

During the American Revolutionary War an American Naval Officer by the name of John Paul Jones (really worth looking further into) led a series of pirate -esque attacks against the British mainland. At one point his small fleet was caught by a much more powerful British fleet. The result of the battle was an incredible victory in which John Paul Jones was able to capture a British vessel and flee to the neutral Netherlands. The British obviously demanded he was extradited and the Netherlands, despite being neutral, told them to stuff it. In order to "prove" that the boat belonged to the U.S. and wasn't stolen (or a pirate), the Dutch needed to create an American flag for the officer to fly while returning home. Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter describing (very poorly) what the flag looked like and the result was the U.S. Serapis (named after the HMS Serapis, the ship captured by John Paul Jones) Flag, sometimes referred to as the "John Paul Jones" flag. The entire story is super interesting and definitely worth looking into more.

You have been playing the *old* version of the mod prior to the German Rework (which borders can be seen in the current version of Victoria 3 Divergences) which had completely redone Bohemia (and the Holy Roman Empire) along with just about every other tag in that region.
As such you have been experiencing the Holy Roman Empire as it originally was, which was a extremely overpowered and relatively easy to form tag with very little regional balance which had as you said in the video title (*Broke Europe*). Alas, that's what I get for never uploading the new version on ModDB due to its abundant variety of bugs which I've been fixing alongside doing yet another rework of the Commonwealth Content (Ruthenia is now actually a thing rather then being a ghost tag that rarely appears) and finishing up the Scandinavian Content.

Such pirates interfered with Dutch trade and after Scilly declines booting the pirates off their island the Dutch declared war on them. 335 years later a treaty was signed signaling peace between the two. During the Scramble for Africa, different European Empires had different end goals for their territories. The French, Germans, and Portuguese all had intentions to stretch their holdings from the Atlantic to Indian Oceans, while the British had intentions to connect their territories all the way from Egypt to South Africa. Ultimately none of these empires would walk away with what they wanted. The British would snub the French in Sudan (almost leading to a war even), the British would basically bully Portugal to prevent them from gaining territory in-between Angola and Mozambique (which would contribute to instability and a later revolution that deposed the monarchy in Portugal), absolutely nobody wanted to let Germany have the resource rich Congo, but the Germans would successfully secure Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi which cut off the British from being able to connect their northern and southern colonies.
Overall, nobody would get what they want. However, it would lead to weird, seemingly illogical outcomes, like France having the extremely disconnected colony of Djibouti, German South-West Africa (Namibia) having that weird panhandle to connect it to a river that flowed East, and Belgium, or rather, King Leopold specifically, ending up with the Congo (since nobody wanted any other actually relevant country to have it).
Theoretically, it would have been in the best interests of the French, Germans, and Portuguese to ally against the British if all they cared about was achieving their respective connected colonies. Which, once again, might have happened if the French didn't back down regarding Sudan, and would have completely undermined the point of the Berlin conference in the first place.

During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, the Army of Liechtenstein was placed at the disposal of the Austrians by the ruler of Lichtenstein, Prince Johann II (also called Johann the Good). Having little else to do with the small force of 80 soldiers, the Austrians placed them as Stelvio Pass (called Stilfser Joch in German). The soldiers reported "there was little else to do but sit and drink wine". When the war ended, the Army of Liechtenstein marched back to Vaduz with 81 men rather than 80. The extra man is said to be an Austrian liaison officer who chose to join the group.

The American Revolutionary War was largely kicked off as a response to high taxes levied by the British in the aftermath of the French and Indian War (and broader Seven Years' War). The opening battle of said war was the Battle of Jumonville Glen in 1754, a British ambush against French Canadiens in what is now Pennsylvania. This was largely unprovoked, basically the commander of the local troops going rogue, albeit the final straw in mounting border tensions between British and French colonists. Who was that commander?
George Washington. Washington, as a random, 22-year-old officer, indirectly set into motion the very chain of events that would lead to America declaring independence over 20 years later, with him as its first president.

Im waiting for a good, proper Poland playthro.
This history fact you may have heard, but in 1410, just hours before the battle between Polish-Lithuanian and the Teutonic forces near Grunwald, the Teutonic Knights were getting bored waiting for the praying Poles and Lithuanians to enter the battlefield. So they send 2 guys with 2 swords to the Polish-Lithuanian camp calling them out for battle. But the soldiers of Poland and Luthuania havent finished praying to God and prepering to battle. So the Polish king straight up denied the Teutons callout for battle. Just said nuh-uh, they have to finish their mass befire getting to the battlefield.
The Poles went on to win the battle.
May not be as crazy as some of the other facts here, but it was the first thing that came to my mind.

In the same vein as the above story, during Apollo 16 the meals lead to the astronauts having a lot of gas. This lead to a hot mic situation where an astronaut complained about "Having the farts again" and "in another 12 fucking days, I ain't never eating any more[of the fruit causing issues]."

It was led by charismatic leader Grace Thompson, the Harmony Coalition sought to transcend partisan divides and foster a new era of collaboration and understanding. Through a series of peaceful protests and community-driven initiatives, the movement advocated for inclusive policies, social justice, and environmental stewardship. It ultimately disbanded in the early 1970s, its profound impact on American society cannot be overstated, inspiring future generations to strive for harmony and cooperation in the pursuit of a better world.

During the 1904 Revolution in Uruguay, the battle was between the two parties that used to share power in the country, the Blancos and the Colorados, with the Colorados holding government. The Blancos (or Whites) used old remington rifles that the revolutionaries bought, whereas the Colorados (or reds) had a hold on the government and army, and had just modernized it with new Mauser rifles.
The issue was that the old Mauser rifles had a longer effective range than the remington rifles, so the army would just sit outside of the revolutionaries' range and take shots at them from afar.
This is how the government killed the revolution's leader, Aparicio Saravia, as he inspected his troops on horseback, getting shot by a government soldier who saw him from afar and decided to fire, with the revolutionaries having no chance of firing back due to the distance.
Needless to say, the government won, just sitting away from gunfire

King Phillip the Second, Alexander the Great's father once sent a letter to the Spartans, saying "If I invade Lakonia you will be destroyed, never to rise again". The Spartans replied by taking the "If" directly from the letter and sending it back. Philip eventually decided to bypass Sparta as it was a poor region and not worth the fight. Neither Philip nor Alexander attacked the Spartans while they ruled.

One of the real events that helped create the myth of El Dorado was that the spanish conquistadors came across some native south americans that used a ton of gold in their coronation and funeral rites. As a result, they burnt a ton of glitzed-up funeral pyres on their local lake, and so people fogured there must be a TON of treasure at the bottom.
Fast forward to the industrial age, and the Brits try to go and siphon the water out of the lake to get at the gold on the bottom. But they do it so shittily that all the sediment on the lakebed hardens under the heat of the sun into something like cement. The brits then try mining the gold out, and fail, then blasting it out with dynamite, and fail, and never get more than a few specs of the stuff out to this very day. Now, its a protrcted cultural heritage site, and also the world's finest monument to the glory of British engineering.
