Indiana Jones is kind of a bad archaeologist (Part 1)

- In this video, I examine the fictional archaeologist, Indiana Jones and speculate how the character and his research methods might fair in the real world of modern academia. I will discuss many basic and key concepts in the scientific field of archaeology through examining the character’s actions in the famous film series and grading him on what I believe he does correct and does incorrect. This video in particular examines Indiana’s Pre-Excavation/Pre-Field work actions and compares them to what real researchers in similar circumstances might do.

Please don't hate me. I just wanted an excuse to get people to learn about archaeology because its really rad. Indiana Jones is still pretty great :) regardless of whatever I say.
We could never hate you trey, though I'm surprised you didn't make a video more themed towards the season. I also wanted to make a suggestion for a passable video. This is a great video.
TREY the Explainer I understand. No movie is perfect.
it is quite an informative video anyhow, just because Indiana Jones is an awesome guy doesn't mean he HAS to be 100% authentic (at least not from a modern perspective) to the field of archaeology.

11:05 I had a history professor who got interested in archeology at a young age and spent a few years trying to prove that the spanish had mining locations in Texas. He gathered a bunch of "evidence" and submitted a paper to Texas Tech. During this time he admittedly neglected his family, got divorced, and went into debt. Texas Tech reviewed his paper and findings and basically sent him a letter back that said "no.." and so gave up and became a history professor. For close to 20 years now hes told every single class this story and how much he hates the history/ archeology community. To put that into perspective.. my dad took his class and told me the story before I ever took his guys course. He went on to do some great work with native American tribes though and traveled the country, leading programs that taught tribes how to transcribe their own history. But still he never shuts up about his bitterness."my ex wife" was an answer on his tests at least 6 times.
Poor dude
@@concept5631it sounds like this was entirely his fault tbh, plus 20+ years of being outstandingly bitter? at that point u either choose to move on or to painfully grind your heels into a dirt that will never help u grow and he has clearly made his own choice lol
@@seaofbees783the guy prioritized the institution over his own family and the institution just told him to scram, bitterness is pretty justified. useless, but justified.
@@obscure.reference just bc it’s kinda justified doesn’t mean it isn’t his fault entirely , HE abandoned his family, HE used baseless evidence which made the institution tell him to bugger off, HE ignored the, probably many or at least a few people, who told him this was a bad idea, HE could’ve stopped at any time, this isn’t an accident or anything, these are HIS choice and his consequences
@@seaofbees783 the bigger problem is that once something is generally accepted in academia, academia does not accept alternate viewpoints. this has ruined many intellectuals and scholars who try to prove or disprove contentious points of history. it isn’t about truth, and nothing about this really implies his findings were baseless, except putting the word evidence in quotes, which is saying nothing specific. point being, academia turning its back on him is not “his consequence” caused by his choice, it’s caused by an insular system of thought that values learning established history rather than questioning it, learning the truth of history, that which goes unrecorded. so yeah, his wife leaving him is his consequence, because he valued academia over his relationships. but academia valuing establishment over new research defeats the purpose of it, and lets down everyone. like, people who value it over their family.

When I was younger I remember going to Springfield Illinois and two noteworthy things happened in my family. First, my sister ran off and jumped on Abraham Lincoln’s bed; bet most people can’t say that. But the second thing was related to me in which we were walking and I say something white in the dirt. Ended up pulling out a piece of glass maybe half a square foot large. We asked the tour guide what we should’ve done with it, thinking it was just some trash. Turns out nope, that was apart of Lincoln’s dining China. They ended up taking it and putting it in a shelf. Fun knowing that I can say I technically excavated and found things from Abraham Lincoln’s home.
Not archeological but my sister accidentally stole a fossil from a protected digsite because my dad wasn't paying attention.
My sister volunteered giving ghost tours at a famous Civil War era house in my town that was used as a field hospital during one of the early battles of the Civil War and says that a ghost pointed out to her where to find a set of silverware that had apparently been hidden from would-be thieves. Lots of knitted jumpers, rain and “Well we didn’t quite find what were were looking for but it was interesting anyway”. I think that had a huge effect on the public understanding of archeology here.

I always thought Indiana Jones specialized in Latin American pre-Columbian and early contact artifacts. At the beginning of the first movie the golden idol he takes is pre-Columbian. The golden cross he gets on his own time at the beginning of the third movie is from the early contact phase with it belonging to a conquistador expedition. Then you have the fourth movie, almost entirely about pre-Columbian cultures and features his close friend Harold Oxley who specialized in pre-Columbian cultures.
The Ark of the Covenant and his foray into Egyptology was not part of his ordinary research but was essentially a military assignment in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The same goes for his Medieval European & Middle Eastern foray in "The Last Crusade". I will admit his foray into Chinese history in "The Temple of Doom" is harder to explain, I guess, at best, one can say "dude really needed money" circa 1935.
However, I could be wrong and I love your videos.
That's actually a pretty good theory!
I really should have checked out what was hanging around in Indie's office in Last Crusade and see if we get any details about his main projects there. You're right that we never really see any of his "intended" research projects, it seems for the most part he is roped into other people's stuff unwillingly.
and thanks man :) happy you like 'em!
@@TREYtheExplainer That's a great idea. One thing I could think that might throw a wrench in it (and explains he deep connections to people from Egypt to China) is, depending on whether you see it as cannon, his exploits from "The Young Indiana Jones". In that series, he really trots the globe and could have easily accumulated items outside of his specialty.
The only other thing is I remember his office not really being a proper office but just a desk in the university's storage room. I remember in undergrad at Boston University a younger TA for an Archeology class I took had a similar office situation in the basement which was also full of carts containing pottery shards from sometimes vastly different cultures.
Let’s think your theory a little further: His scientific specialty is, as you said, pre-Colombian America. His second pillar is getting artifacts from the black marked to the museum where they belong.
The latter is the reason why he’s recruited by the government. But at the beginning of the Temple of Doom he seems to be seeking a payday of his own...
@@yaff1851 Remember, the movies didn't come out in chronological order. Raiders of the Lost Ark is set in 1936, Temple of Doom is set in 1935, and the Last Crusade is set in 1938.
I do agree that it makes sense if one of his "Specialties" is recovering archeological artifacts off the black market, for that to be a reason he is approached by the government in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Depending on how much stock you put into the Young Indiana Jones series being cannon, I always thought it was due to him being during World War I, and its aftermath, a soldier who did special missions and a spy.

“Expert of the occult”
In all the movies he is hunting objects of significant “supernatural” value or power. When dealing with those forces there isn’t really anything to learn besides interacting with them. He often meets with experts in the fields he is touching on and they invariably have some level of respect for him. Clearly not something he would gain if he was just a “poser”.
Objects of occult power would be incredibly rare and valuable. Their locations varied and well hidden and behind all manner of protection. He also continually has to race against others who are better equipped in every way to be going after these things. They do so for immeasurable profit whilst he basically just gives them away to be put into museums.
He’s probably the best, and only, Occult Archeologist of his time.

I almost flipped out at the title until I saw ‘archeologists’
Indiana Jones is kind of a bad
he seems more like a grave robber or artifact retriever than an actually scientist.
Those two things are VERY different
@@clink6017 eh.. no. if i would have written archeologist, then yes, but "retrieving" things does not translate into doing it legal. ;)
@@AkiSan0 yeah must museums where I live bought their items on the black market lol
To be fair archeologists during WWII were practically grave robbers, nobody gave a damn about permissions or ownership, and practically everyone believed that first world countries had the instant right to own every important artifact ever to put in their museums, so Indy is just doing what was considered normal back then (Hell he even does slightly better than others because he sometimes gives ownership of recovered items).
It's a 19th century view of archeology. Dynamite and shovels to find the baubles of kings.
I always wanted to be an archaeologist myself when I grew up and I was shocked by the careless ways he treated historic stuff. Same goes for Lara Croft by the way.
TBF Lara Croft was always labeled a tomb raider so I’m not so surprised with her careless approach to archaeologist
as a grave robber, i really appreciate the representation
TBF, a lot of the time Indy is racing against bad-actor archaeologists who are trying to do worse with their artifacts than he would.
He's like an aggressive proactive reclaimer of black market artefacts, after they're out of context, but before they're in some rich arseholes office.
I'll list off the reasons why Indiana Jones is actually a GREAT Archaeologist:
He punches people.
He's intelligent.
He's got money.
He punches people.
He sleeps with multiple women.
He goes on amazing adventures.
He punches people.
He can shoot a guy and get away with it.
He bangs his students.
He punches people.
He can kill 3 Nazis with a single bullet.
He travels around the world.
He punches people.
AND SO ON.
Red Letter Media reference?
change Indiana Jones for james bond and it still works
I'll give him a few points for punching Nazis...
Funnily enough, had Indiana Jones existed today, a lot of american conservatives would be upset with him for punching nazis. How the times have changed.
@@timmd8766 Really? I never knew American Conservatives to sympathise with Nazis.
I've always viewed him more as a professional academic archaeologist first, due to him being a professor and having such broad knowledge, and a relic hunter on the side, considering he hunts for specific artifacts and if I remember correctly in one of the movies he discusses the sale of artifacts.
this brings back memories of my 7th (or so) grade HISTORY teacher complaining about the building of a new part of the school being delayed by archeological excavations as it is fairly common practice where I lived to have the archeologists come in first whereever something new is build or something old is demolished.
I always wondered if Indy goes back to his lecture hall and contemplates how he straight up murdered people and now he's back to teaching like it's no big deal.
bro thinks hes Walter White
He fought in two world wars, many people in his time did.
"Scientists shouldn't have rivals."
Appearently Marsh and Cope didn't get the memo.
Nor Edison and...well, everybody, really.
Marsh and Cope are exactly what I was talking about. They're stupid rivalry led to so much sloppiness and rushed excavations. Never let your egos get between you and conducting good, accurate, and careful research.
And also Richard Owen and... well, everyone he met, I guess.

21:04 I love how you credited Belloq like you would a photo or bit of research.
😂 I hoped someone would notice that. Gotta use that Mla citation for the work he did
@@TREYtheExplainer hello 👋
Before I even watch the movie, I'm gonna say he's more of a relic hunter than an archaeologist, but we'll see how this video continues.
Not gonna lie, the Smithsonian Trinomial assignation made me so excited that I legit fangirled over it. That is so good, it's so easy to follow, document and find, that's amazing.
Some experts on a Reddit thread I read once gave Indie a passing grade. Mostly for his academic teaching portrayal.
They mention that since he was ‘protecting’ artifacts from Nazi’s or people who wouldn’t curate and protect it, his actions were justified. I.E. archeologists today will cut corners to retrieve artifacts quickly if they’re of the belief ISIS is going to destroy the site soon.
They also made allowances for it being an action adventure movie.
After receiving my Masters degree in Medieval Archaeology I pointed out some glaring flaws in the curriculum to our professor as I had not received any classes on fighting Nazis, avoiding traps or the proper use of whips. He assured me that my comments would be taken into consideration so I hope the next generation will be more prepared for the rigors of academic fieldwork.
Also I noticed you have a very American view of archaeology. Here in Europe it is usually considered the sister-field of history instead of cultural anthropology although this New/Old World difference is taught and explained. But then there is the fact that historic sources go back millennia and cover most of the continent even some technically prehistoric ages/regions. For example Iron Age celts didn’t leave any writings of their own but the Romans sure mention them a lot...
To summarize: No archaeologists would ever be as cool as Indy.
Exactly
Indiana Jones is just a rip-off of the character Harry Steele played by Charlton Heston in the 1954 movie 'Secrets of the Incas'.
Nor as in prison as Indy..
His dad wasn't an archaeologist, he was a medieval scholar and a writer. In fact if you watch the young Indiana Jones series (which was better than the regular movies) you'll find that his dad was not at all supportive of him becoming an archaeologist, seems strange considering the similarities but makes sense when you realize indie was always rambunctious going on at nature's and his dad thought he was nothing more than his wild nature rather than true passion for the past .
-#1 indiana fan!
I'm glad you mentioned Indys ability to find information from locals, i read a book about Indy when he was a kid traveling with his father around the world and it was established that he would learn every language he encountered.
I really liked that concept and its really the only thing i remember about the book but the idea stuck with me and I've since tried emulating it, but I'm still nowhere near decent at Spanish or French a decade+ later lol
So i say with his natural charisma and ability to connect with the locals no matter where he is that makes finding answers really easy setting him straight on the path towards the prize, so while he isn't a realistic archeologist his methods are and they work as a perfect setup for the adventure that follows.

As an aside, would it have been cool if the Grail Knight, instead of dying in the collapse of the site, instead came back to civilization? What a historical resource he would be.
Some people I knew in college thought it would have been cooler if the Grail Knight had spoken in Chaucerian Middle English, and then Indy responded to him in fluent Middle English because Indy speaks all languages (except Hovitos).

Minor note: at 18:36, you have "draught" instead of "drought." The former refers to a drink, while the latter refers to a lack of it.
Ill go ahead an say part 2 doesmt exist. I'll even write "References to a second part of this so-called "series" (implied by the used of 'part 1' in the title and multiple references to content yet to be explained that was never explain) did not produce an evident second part. Research through the chanel was made and no video seemed to align with the contents of this "part 1". This brings us to two theories: 1. The video never existed, or 2. The video was published, and since then, it was removed for one reason to another. Both theories have to be analyzed on their own, and it is encouraged to do so in future research".

This is a fantastic and informative video. I’m not trying to “rebut” anything, I get the point and I loved every minute. I just feel like we have to remember Indy is a very singular type of man; he is an archaeologist but it would also be accurate to call him a professional adventurer. He’s after fortune and glory. There are actually people like this, that’s who those old serials are exaggerations of. I’d even suggest his day job as an archaeologist/professor may even be a vehicle for him to seek thrills, one that he just happened to inherit from his father. The time period matters, too (as you suggest yourself in the video).
At any rate, of course this is all in fun either way. One issue I do take; I understand your point about how a real-life archaeologist having rivals is counterproductive (assuming they aren’t Indiana Jones; see original point), but you can’t fault him for not working with Belloc! He’s evil, lol! Same goes for crediting the Nazis for asking permission to seek the grail. They do worse stuff, lol! Indy has to race them to it or they will be invincible, he can be forgiven in this instance for not observing protocol.
(Edit) That will teach me to comment before finishing the video. You show a quote from Lucas that pretty much confirms basically what I was hypothesising (that he started out a mercenary grave robber whom the museums eventually engaged professionally).
In regards to Indy vs. Belloq, do you suppose you could do a video about the great scientific rivalries (I,e. Marsh vs. Cope) and how they hurt the field they were in.
When I was 13, I well up with righteous indignation when Indy yelled at Belloq, "It should be in a museum!" I never considered it should be left in the ground!
I could swear part 2 is alrdy out is it gone or am i imagining things? ö.ö
I mean when you think about it Indy probably does specialize in Mesoamerica considering two, yes counting Crystal Skull and the opening of Raiders, take place in that area. As well, considering he probably grew up hearing about his father's research into Early Christian history and Judeo-Christian artifacts of folklore/scriptures he probably knows more than most of his contemporaries. Really only Temple is the outlier in its subject matter as it is tonally with the rest of the films. Great Video as always, I'm just a nitpicky nerd. Also, not an archeologist only a piss poor historian.
