    These signs are very helpful As a SocialWorker I find many people are reluctant to talk about these things but translators need to be able to sign them properly and be willing to do so. Your video modeled that behavior as well as showing us the signs.

    I really really wish this had more comprehensive captions or even sound. I can't read lips, but I'm trying to learn as much vocab as I can. Immersion therapy may be helpful in some cases, but I see all these signs flicking by and I'd like to know what they mean.

    So what you're saying is there are as many slang expression in ASL as there are in spoken language. Regional references "accents" etc. I was trying to research some ASL (I think it was ASL) in a movie called "Away from Her" around 40:18 into the movie. It's a 2007 movie with Julie Christie. The character's a spicy old lady and the signs seem pretty graphic, but I couldn't catch any of them. I'm not very good at it.

    Hi! Regarding the sign for "broke up" as in "boyfriend and girlfriend broke up" I have also seen it signed "O - F - F". It's the same movement as the sign you're using but "off" is spelled with each hand as they move away from each other. Not sure if I'm making that clear; so both hands start in the "O" shape together and then as they simultaneously move apart from each other to the left and to the right, you change the "O" to "F". Love all your videos thank you so much for sharing! As a newly certified interpreter I'm benefiting so much from supplementing with your videos.

      @ASLInterpreterSHansen just letting you know there’s a neutral space that is related to cued speech and the other sign is related to the word, ‘lesbian’

    Regarding the second variation for "FALL-IN-LOVE": Can that sign also mean to be completely immersed in something, or does it strictly mean "to fall in love"?

    • @ASLInterpreterSHansen
      @ASLInterpreterSHansen  10 років тому +4

      Hi~Yep...can be "immersed" or "my passion (ie: "I am so into theatre") etc... Depends on context ;o) Thanks for watching and comments!

    Just wondering what the facial grammar is at the end, where you move your tongue back and forth. I've never seen that before.

    that's not the sign for bisexual either. The sign you're doing on your cheek is a rude sign for "transsexual" and isn't used anymroe. Neither is the "swinging between two" sign for bi. Those are both insulting.

      +Anna Masson Hi Anna! Thanks for comments! These vlogs are from the perspective of an interpreter who needs to be familiar with a range of signs in use around the US. Some may be seen as offensive, and language continues to change regularly, but as an interpreter, these are signs that are still in circulation and are important for working interpreters to be familiar with and recognize when interpreting. Thanks for your feedback!!!SH

      In California, we use this sign for bisexual and not for transexual. Be aware of regional differences.
