This wood carving is a decorative sculpture adorning a float used in the rituals of the Tomishima Shrine in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

This is a wood carving of a story from the Kibune Shrine in Kyoto because Tomishima Shrine enshrines the deity of Kibune Shrine.
    The story goes as follows.
"Kibune Myojin descended from the heavenly realm to Kagami-iwa (mirror rock) in the middle of Mt. He was accompanied by a demon named Butsukoku-dozhi.
The child was so eloquent that he did not respect the commandments of the gods and told others about the whole secret affairs of the world of the gods. When he was banished from Kibune, he fled to the mountains of Yoshino.
There, Butsukoku-doko temporarily became the leader with five demons in tow, but he soon ran back and secretly hid behind Kagami-iwa (mirror rock) to stay under house arrest until he was finally forgiven for his crime.
The Tongue family, the head family of Kibune Shrine, wrote the name of Kagami-iwa (mirror rock) as "Kusu-iwa," because they used to "bend down" to stay under house arrest at this place. It is also said that the son of this first generation Bulguk Doji was named Monkoku Doji.
One day, Bukoku-dozhi took out a "bow of Kibune Myojin" and a "bow made of iron with a face of 2" and "3" and broke them into two pieces. The Kifune Myojin, angered by the child's misdeed, bound the child's hands with seven iron chains, but the child was not the least bit intimidated, and tore them off. Kifune Myojin then placed a large stone with four sides of a two-ken length across the child's backbone, but the child did not suffer from this, and Kifune Myojin was deeply distressed.
The child ate three tablespoons of food a day, but at the age of 130, he was struck by lightning and died.
He later returned with five demons from Yoshino, and performed his duties diligently in place of his father, until his death at the age of 102.
He died at the age of 102. He also named a child of Monkoku Doji "Hokoku Doji," and a child of Hokoku Doji "Ankoku Doji," and so on in the form of demons until the fourth generation. From the fifth generation, however, they took the form of ordinary human beings, and their descendants continued to prosper and serve the deity.
They named themselves "Zetu(tongue)" in order not to forget their ancestors"
I interpreted this story in my own way to create this wood carving.
The floats paraded at Shinto festivals in this region are decorated with wood carvings, metal works, and embroideries depicting Japanese mythology, battles (mainly before the Edo period), and auspicious animals.

Amazing craftmanship! It's a joy to watch the progress and see the finished pieces.
And nice to see it's use in the Shinto Festival at the end.
I was staring at the 'roof' as it was moving and it took me a moment to realize the drummers sitting under it. It's impressive they can keep the rhythm as it's being jostled about.

Your work is incredible :D I would happily watch a 3-hour-long video with every tine detail. It's incredible to watch.
It would also be incredible to see one of those festivals in person. I doubt I'll ever be able to, but it's nice to dream :)
