Thank you for posting this game. I believe to this day that this was Steve Young’s greatest performance of his career. Hobbled and humiliated he fought, scratched, and clawed his team to the win. Inspiring.
49ers came out flat as an ironing board after blowing the game on the previous Monday night in Green Bay. Fell behind 21-0 and then came back to win 28-21. I was at this 49er game, man I miss Candlestick Park. George Seifert's last year as 49er HC. I loved to watch Steve Young play QB, he was awesome.
I loved these 49er uniforms. From the strip pattern on the pants and helmet to the gold outline on the shadowed numbers, to the reflective shade of red on the jerseys. Love them. I might be the only person alive who does, though.
You are not. I thought they worked great with the white pants. But the away version of these with gold pants were my favorite. They really took a step back with what they wear now imo, but who knows, give it some time and they will probably use these as "throwbacks" again at some point.
Thanks for posting this game! this was my first 49ers game. I had it recorded on VHS forever, no clue where it is today. Steve Young talks about this game in his book "My life behind the spiral". Thanks again.
I'm surprised Carroll Peter an unabashed front runner didn't have a bucket of Gatorade dumped over his head after the 9ers came back after Young's heroics. I'm sure he thought he was the reason for the 9ers comeback.
@@mrdg4635 That Darn Artificial Turf Busted his ankles because he was our best offensive weapon/player that year with Steve Young. SMH! We could've gotten our 6th Ring
The salary cap was already here so it was pay Rice or Deion, not both. They choose Rice. I'm glad they did. I agree they never should of let Waters go. The 2 years after the running game struggled. After that, I disagree with your statement. The Niners made Hearst the primary offense in 97, he had over 1,000 rushing and they were the 1 seed in the NFC. They were rolling till Hearst broke his collarbone. A lot of the 1997 Niner games are on UA-cam so you can see for yourself. The Niners sucked in 99 and 00, but watching Charlie Garner was one of the best parts for me. He was exciting and brought some energy as Garcia was learning how to play QB. The Hearst/Barlow combo was fine in 01-03. 04, well we try to forget about 04. Then they drafted some guy named Frank Gore. ;)
I watched this game when I was in 6th grade. I remember thinking Steve Young was the best athlete in the world and that it wasn’t fair for the bengals because he was just too fast and too strong and too smart that they would never win. I also remember feeling SO BAD duuuude for Coach Shula. I didn’t know anything about him and had no connection to him at all. I just felt so bad for him. Because I knew he was going to get fired and I just thought about his family and his kids and having to go home and tell them what happened and I just felt BAD. Duuuuuuuuude, I felt so bad for him. It’s just so amusing looking back now and reliving those emotions. I was such a funny kid...feeling SO BAD for THE OTHER teams coach! I love it !! Edit: I just realized the game I watched and felt so bad about was @ Cincinatti the following year. xD
Man this was when football at it's best. bt man the Bengals were awfull in the 90s, I remember they started 2_0 and everybody was shock bt ended like 4 and 12 .lol. they were so bad that taco bowl, a video game, that everytime u played a season, the Bengals always had a losing season. They were dead last in there division all the time. I felt so bad that I played the Bengals in season mode so they can win a super bowl..lol
Wayne Hardy your right. I do remember this being dave shula last game. I believe the next morning he got fired. what a tough time to have been a bengal fan in those days. a lot of bengal fans are not old enough to remember how bad the bengals were before marvin lewis took over.
David Shula was 19-52 as bengals head coach. He lost 50 games faster than any head coach in history... 1992: 5-11 1993: 3-13 1994- 3-13 1995: 7-9 1996: started 1-6 and fired mid season... The David Klingler era just was awful... and part of it they never had any pieces and even Blake couldn’t help them out as much... although he was great for what he had. Most of the games they lost during his era were games that they could have won.
He was a damn good Defensive Coordinator for us in 1996-1997. Our D-##### was in the top 5 that season. Pete is from San Fran too. Incredible if we kept him till either 1999-2000 or till 2003 before he went to USC
Bengals was so hopelessly inept after 1990. We had such poor morale and it showed. If we developed a decent young player we'd let him go for peanuts and if we ever got a decent trade offer (all 7 picks 1999) we'd never pull the trigger because the owner thought that maybe the other team knows something he didn't about the player. I'm not saying Mike Brown does that, hell he has done some good things since '96 but it sure as hell seemed like it. It was really that dumb... fo real.

The Definitive era of NFL on NBC......... NFL on NBC game 2 of NBC Doubleheader Sunday Oct 20, 1996, 4 pm ET kick-off
The best era of the NFL ON NBC
CBS has done a good job with the AFC games and their coverage, but it felt more natural when NBC covered the AFC on a regular basis.
The best era for NBC period
This was the largest 49ers comeback after 1980 until the 2002 NFC wild card game.
Yup. I was at the 2002 Wild Card game.
My god Steve Young was a tough, resilient qb. Played through a lot of injuries. He would shred the nfl nowadays.
Facts Bro Factuals lol Factuality
He took a beating throughout his career, still glad he is candid in conversation when he is on the tv/radio.
These uniforms were dope they should bring this one back
Agreed! The 96-97 uniforms are underrated af.
Weird seeing Garrison Hearst scoring against the 49ers. HORRIBLE start, solid comeback avoiding the donut game pit.
I was at this game and I met Steve Young TODAY, and I told him about it, he says, 'Man u got a good memory!' HAHAHAHA
Dave Shula's last game as coach of the Bengals. He was fired the next day after blowing a 21-7 halftime lead.
Steve young against the Bengals showed courage beyond belief he was a warrior
2:10:40 This Terrell Owens guy, I think he might have a career playing football

I think we should get this Hearst guy
NGL, it's weird seeing Garrison Hearst as a non-49er.
Thank u for this game. I remember this one as a young buck. So fun to watch these old niner games
I remember watching this when I was 7. Lol.

The 49ers saw the one good Cincinnati player and made sure to take him the following year
Jonny Watts that's right mr. Garrison Hearst busted his ankle championship against the Falcons I remember that I think I was like 13

i was at this game! as a benglas fan at 16 lol. amazing to watch it!
steve young was so fun to watch
niners never should have let ricky waters walk. Should have kept deion as well. Their running game sucked for years after waters left

Watters wanted to be the number one option on offense. He also wanted to be paid more than Rice.
The rematch to Super Bowl XXXIII.

Watching this game to see my favorite player, Carl Pickens, almost halftime and all I've seen is 2 penalties 2 overthrown balls and 1 rec for 2 yards
After this, Shula was fired, never to be seen in the NFL again.... today he runs his dad's steakhouse chain
Shula is coaching receivers at his alma mater Dartmouth. Fourth year.

Mike Brown has made truly boneheaded decisions in his 30 years as the team owner.
