Shane Warne had a huge impact on a lot of these. I swear Michael Beer only got in the team based off Warne's endorsement. And Warne himself anointed both Cam White and Steve Smith as his natural successors, tried to coach them, and turned both into specialist batters somehow. So it's somewhat ironic that the one person he didn't rate ends up being the one who stuck around. Warne himself played a massive role in making his shadow as big and as dark as it became.
Amazing video and amazing series. I had no idea about Craig Howard's influence in Lyon and Murphy's career! Also, I love the section on Krejza's debut, it has to be one of the strangest individual performances in the history of test cricket.
One of the best Australian cricket series I’ve ever seen! I’d love to see more of these types of vids but understand it would of taken some serious time. You’re a dead set legend
A really great series - I remember the lols around the office when Michael Beer was selected. Must say I was sad Sweppo wasn't mentioned in this. Is this just my wrist spin bias from growing up through the Shane Warne era? Feel like he's been both unlucky and hard done by not to get more of a run at a test spot behind Lyon.
Oh man that Craig Howard callback in the end blew my mind! What a story!! UA-cam needs videos of Craig Howard bowling in Shield Cricket. @robelinda are you listening?
How australia treated steve okeefe is bizzare, Guy was a bell end. But his first class and test numbers speak for themselves. Okeefe and lyon should of been a tandem for years, but both treate poorly by austalia, only one fo them fought through it.
A lot of people don’t rate Jadejas bowling as much today but looking back,we had less skilled right handed version of Jadeja already who dominated cricket in the pre drs era which people say is the greatest aid for his bowling and yet Colin miller got cricketer of the year in probably the second best test side that ever existed so I think Jadeja would have been successful in the previous era as well (maybe not to this extent though)
We’ve made quite a few now. Nz openers. India at world cups. Stuart broad. (Probably others I have forgotten). I’m truth I don’t start out to make a series, the stories just sort of grow.
Nathan Lyon and Nathan Hauritz have almost identical stats. Lyon's average of 31 is only 3 points above Hauritz's. Lyon has only a slightly better strike rate of 63 compared with Hauritz's 66. And Lyon's RPO is 2.94 which is only 20 points better than Hauritz's 3.15. On paper, it doesn't make sense that one player would become an icon and legend of Australian cricket and the other would be an embarrassing, forgotten quirk.
There is a big difference in those numbers. I think the number is four not three. Which is more then ten percent. Also the global bowling average is usually around 32, meaning that for nearly 500 wickets Lyon is an above par bowler and hauritz was not. There is also the mount they played, Lyon’s is well tested around the world over generations. Hauritz was not. So if you were to take in their entire red ball career Hauritz bowling average is 44, Lyon is 33. So now the difference is very stark when we have them both playing a lot. So they’re not really similar, I think it looks like this because of how little Hauritz played. I think if they had both played 70 tests there would be a huge difference between their averages. That said, in the video I talk about him over performing in his tests, and I think that’s the part he doesn’t get credit for. No one wanted him, they doubted him the entire time, and he he actually took wickets and I would argue even improved as a batter, and still no one cared.
The non-selection of Steve O'Keefe really damaged my love for cricket. I realised that the selectors were not selecting players on merit. As wonderful as Nathan Lyons is, Australia would've been more successful had O"Keefe been given the same opportunities.
Milquetoast NO. I vehemently disagree. Hauritz was talented. He finished with a Test average under 35 and he could bat. They guy was good. You take that back Mr. Kimber! His record did not fallter him. You ARE as good as your record says you are (mind you, his FC average wasn't so good). As for confidence, he probably needed a captain like Lawson to give him belief. You are correct about Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer. The luckiest Test caps in history? Steve O'Keefe was massively underrated. His FC record (& Test record) is outstanding. (and better than a 100 Test contemporary). Katich was pretty decent. North's batting was very strange. 100s or nothing.
Sorry, Jrrod. I jumped the gun. I assumed you thought he was rubbish like most of the spinners featured. Especially after hearing Doherty & Beer's names mentioned. I apologise.@@JarrodKimberYT

Yup, beer got in partly because of Warne. McGain perhaps too. Where O’Keefe would perhaps have been slowed down by Warne questioning him.
Jarrod you truly are the GOAT when it comes to cricket analysis.
So comprehensive yet concise, love it!
This series is just amazing. I hope it blows up and lot of people across the spectrum watch it. Thanks Jarrod!
Thank you. Huge thanks to Muku and team for their help as well.
Great work - the Aussie distaste for off spin was a tantalising little detail, would love to hear more.
You know what’s weirder about it, Australia produces a lot of
Left handers compared to other countries. It’s a fascinating pattern.

Worth finding the video of it. Some of the balls are incredible.

You’re a dead set legend
There will always be more. But yes this type take longer. Try the nz openers series for something similar. Incredible stories there too.

It’s still very early on him. They guys mid career now are still developing their stories.
Oh man that Craig Howard callback in the end blew my mind! What a story!! UA-cam needs videos of Craig Howard bowling in Shield Cricket. @robelinda are you listening?
I couldn’t find any. Though I am sure I’ve seen them online before.
I love the impact of the endings to your videos Jarrod!
Thanks so much.
What a great series!
Love the narration and story telling through data here
👏😃
Thanks. It’s something I have wanted to do for a long time.
aah, this was once again so well done. The writing on this one really stood out!
Thank you.

Great stuff JK - another great project. Keep up the great work.
What a terrific video! A terrific trilogy of videos no less!
Thanks, Paul.
Great series, loved this and the NZ openers one also - fascinating listen
Just brilliant work. As a left arm wrist spinner myself I found this really inspiring and illuminating to watch. Cricket is just the greatest. :)
Keep spinning.
Wow, Jarrod. You're one hell of a swinger
Played
I do enjoy that North, Katich and Pup all have Test 6fers
Bevan and Border with ten wicket hauls too. Bizarre pattern.
Loving this series mate

He would have been fine in this era. But he would have bowled different. Miller would have now as well.
@JarrodKimberYT Great series! But are you sure Jon and Ian Holland are related??
Jarrod you need to make more series, this was brilliant, Kudos to you and your team.
We’ve made quite a few now. Nz openers. India at world cups. Stuart broad. (Probably others I have forgotten). I’m truth I don’t start out to make a series, the stories just sort of grow.
Incredible Jarrod, Even Better Than Two's Classic! This Was Quite Emotional As Well ☺👏
Thank you

Never said he wasn’t talented. I said he was bland. I was pretty pro him if you paid attention.
