      Sometimes it's better not to shout at the kids, but just give them that look that says "I'm quite disappointed with you."

    Exeter is my home station I’m always there recording train videos, nice video by the way I will say iet seats are hard but if you go on them a few more times you get use to the seats, I’m always a hst fan however

      Yeah, I still love the HSTs. Looking forward to getting a ride on ScotRail’s in October.

    9:56 On weekdays there is a random Bristol - London that does in fact call at Trowbridge! 1K71 that leaves at 0510 . Strangely it runs non-stop through Bath Spa

    Those seats are unsuitable for intercity length journeys. I use this service (from TVP) to PAD a lot and otherwise like these trains but the numb bums occur too often! The HST remains the benchmark... BTW - you mentioned passing the M5 Cullompton services - I think you'll find that was the site of Cullompton station back in the day.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  2 роки тому +1

      Yes it was indeed the site of the old station!
      I suffer the IET seats too as I'm an Exeter boy (bey) - many of my adventures start with EXD
      ➡PAD

    I quite like the Great Western Railway Class 800 and Class 802. Except the seats aren’t as comfortable but those trains are very nice and smooth.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  2 роки тому +2

      My concern is indeed that the seat is not quite good enough for a flagship service. I also find that the 80x can feel slightly unstable at high speeds over about 115mph (185 km/h)

      @@JohnnyHooverTravels That is so bad. I am British but I live in a big city in France. It takes a TGV from my city to travel the 400 kms to Paris 2 ( two) hours. That is an AVERAGE of 200km an hour... so you can imagine what speeds they get
      up to. There is NO jitter. The seats are comfortable, the catering good and the prices MUCH lower than GWR.
      GWR should be ashamed of themselves.

    The seats do seem SLIGHTLY better than the LNER ones, but are still not suitable for purpose. When seats started getting firmer we were told it was for fire safety but I'm sure, in the 2020s we must have suitable fire retardant foam-like substances. From a couple of recent trips, I can tell you that other countries in Europe seem to manage. So is it a cost thing? How much more could a bit of foam add to the cost of the whole train?

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  11 місяців тому

      I completely agree. The seat is such an important factor for passengers that uncomfortable ones over long distances are very much to be avoided. As you say, other seats on other new trains can be more comfortable, so why not on this train?
      Thanks for watching 👍

    That's fine for 2 or 3 hours but not for longer journeys and don't rely on standard class catering.
    It would be interesting if someone compared various Hitachi trains in standard class, seats, catering, length of journey, ride quality,, overal experience..
    LNER, GWR, Lumo, Avanti, Hull Trains, East Midlands eventually.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  8 місяців тому

      Yes, i wouldn't fancy a longer haul (although i do it when i go to Penzance).
      I think i have covered most of them on the channel, but not the standard class which, as you say, can be hit and miss on all services.
      Nice idea. I will think about that 👍
      Thanks too for watching 👍

  • @colinriley123

    interesting. I have just watched this after some of your Czech videos. The tone is different. You loved the Czech train experience. Your tone in this reflects the class 800s, and especially those with GWR. The experience is bland and without any thrill, or sense of excellence, and b******* uncomfortable. I would rather travel second class on a Castle set between Penzance and London than first class on a Class 800. With the same trains LNER do a better job, because they are more customer focused.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  2 роки тому +2

      Living where I do, I use 800s a lot to get to London and elsewhere. I suppose a little bit of familiarity breeds contempt, but I do think that, as you say, GWR's service isn't up to the levels of, say, LNER. At the end of the month I'll be releasing a look at Hull Trains, so there's more comparison there too (Spoiler: HT are better than GWR)
      Just now I was looking at video from seat manufacturer Compin Faisa, who make the Sophia train seat. They specifically refer to them as commuter and regional service seats.

    • @daydays12

    The IET's are hit and miss. Some are really smooth at 125mph, others rock and judder and you struggle to stay standing. The seats are ok is, First class is a little better but nowhere near as nice as the old armchair seats from the HST's. The trolley service is a joke and needs to go! Overall they could be really good trains with a few modifications.

      And as they get older, what little padding there was in standard class seems to be getting lessened with use. Just got off one right now and it was like sitting on a board.
