As a working class grammar school kid in the 70s, I played rugby against Roundhay School. To us it seemed like a palace. Even when it became a comprehensive my old school was still thought of as the grammar school. Roundhay School was originally an independent school, became a grammar not long before I played against them, and only became a comprehensive shortly before Truss attended. It was not the struggling inner city comprehensive she would have us believe.

The extraordinary thing is how devoid she is of the ability to ad lib. She reminds me a bit of Cameron who when making terrible decisions just kept using phrases like 'In Hindsight' 'I'm honest' 'I'm still committed to' whilst just not being up to the job.

Truss like Osborne and Cameron proved essentially a lightweight. So much of the old Etonian aristocracy was so diluted by buggery, communism and the fact Eton had the highest loss rate of any school, not only in WW1, WW2 but in Korea. So if Cameron's blood lines are any more real than Harold MacMillan, even by marriage ( to Devonshire) its terribly diluted
But we probably need to bring Fox and Gove back for a while to control Scotland

Good point from Rory. The Tories have wrecked the economy now and the legacy for Labour will limit their choices. But, Labour needs to adapt dynamically.Jonny Mercer needs to cross the floor to Labour, it's the simple solution for him.Truss's giggling at him was her immaturity and callousness, but also laughing at Mercer is also to laugh at all those who have done military service. Its a typical childish response form another Oxbridge educated dunce who has no wisdom or maturity. I hated Thatcher but would she have giggled at a man who has served the UK in a war.

Anyone who supports a prolonged war in Ukraine (like both parties and most people) and not a quick, negotiated compromise resolution then this is why the economy is wrecked. Truss screwed up but the economic damage is fleeting. The political damage is longer-lasting. Tories didn't wreck the economy. As Hunt pointed out yesterday, Labour don't disagree fundamentally with his core decisions.

Imagine how different the country would be if it was currently under a Labour government. No continuous political instability, allowing government to think long term, not next week. A windfall tax on the gas companies war-profiteering, making what has always been a non-problem exactly that. The cessation of charity status for British private schools, meaning these elite businesses will start paying taxes which have been handpicked to help fund inadequately funded state schools. To assist small businesses on the high street, business rates would be abolished, instead with online retailers such as Amazon picking up the slack for once with the tax loopholes vanishing. Instead of trickle down economics, it would be trickle up.
A country to be proud of, and a government to get behind.

One may ask what hand has Liz got to play, but if the 1922 committee and the Tories come on too strong, anyone ever think she may blow the whole thing up and send the tory party and Britain into a crisis. If she tenders her resignation immediately, what's the next move for the Tories that won't have the general public screaming for their heads? They need her to remain in post notwithstanding who calls the shots but they do need her in that role as they plot a palatable next move. IMO

Again Rory asks how do Labour increase spending? It's quite simple, invest in things that have solid fiscal multipliers! Tax breaks for the rich have crap fiscal returns but you know, social housing programs and mass investments in renewables have very solid ones. It's a typical Tory response that all spending is bad and doesn't provide a benefit to the economy.

The economic figures coming out of America are actually pretty exceptional considering the global picture, 500k jobs report in July, 300k jobs report in August, u3 and u6 unemployment at, wage growth is up both month over month and for the year, whilst America may be by technical definitions in a recession, this is probably the best recession for working Americans they have seen ever

    • @dirremoire

The PM does not have to be the party leader. The Churchill doctrine shows that as Churchill became PM keeping Chamberlin as Party Leader on the back benches. The party showed he had enough support to for a government and petitioned the King who accepted that and asked him to form a government. So the party could do that with a freshly elected Rory in Mad Nads old seat.
