It's crazy that this is still going on, despite how many times it's been highlighted and restaurants receive bad pressed and are forced to issue an "apology." Glad that it was on film and that they got bad press. It's not the fact that there's a dress code, it's the fact that there's a double-standard and it's clear that it's only enforced as a way to keep blacks out. That said, if they ate the food, they should have paid the bill. Though, I wouldn't have tipped, and would explain to the waiter/waitress why.
Restaurants are private businesses and they could refused services to whomever. As customers, if they give you bad service, then take your service elsewhere and write a bad review. It’s going to be the restaurant’s lost.
Yes they can hut not on a race based reason which clearly this is what is going on here. Get familiar with the constitution or else you might get in trouble trying to discriminate a person for reasons protected by the law. There is no reason why you enforce a certain policy on one group and be lenient on another for the same reason. That is called discrimination.
Is the restaurant owners here making all these nonsense comments? They clearly discriminated against one group of people, it's got nothing to do with what they were wearing.
Definitely needs to be boycott this is what happens all the time , they look at your skin color and immediately discriminate . Not even realizing sometimes you are more wealthy or educated than the others.

Anyone in Jersey City, NJ who believes in Equal Justice and are against racism, should really consider staying away from the The Ashford Restaurant/Bar. I would, but I live in Los Angeles, CA. This story is sickening. Hello this is 2021 ! But then again racism, and race relations are going backwards in many places, and also in voting rights in "Red States".

ITS NICE TO BE IMPORTANT, BUT ITS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!!!!....HOPE THEY JUST GO AWAY!!!!
Why would you patronize a business that refuses you entry? Better yet why not just go home and change? Two attention _____ is what this is, ALWAYS the “victims” I see Yelp advertises “black owned” there you go be free.
As a black person who has worked in restaurants for 4+ yrs (all high volume/high end). If I am to assume based on stereotype and not racism why they weren't let in. It's probably because it is a MASSIVE stereotype that unfortunately you see played out more than you don't see played out that black people either don't tip at all or tip very very little. Some servers don't like having them not because of their race, but because it is far too common to have a black table stay for long enough time that you could've turned through at least 2 other parties (more money for the business and more tips if you're lucky). And camp with empty glasses for an hr refusing to leave so they can relax and chat like the table isn't for eating/drinking and its just for socializing and hogging space. Then they want to tip you 2 dollars when in the time they spent talking over empty cups and plates you couldve been almost done with another transaction. I imagine bartenders inside or maybe servers inside didn't want to deal with that especially during covid when it's already hard enough to make money. Now I will def not say it's a black thing only because it is extremely common in the restaurant business in general, it's just that in that demographic, there are more black people who would do that than those who wouldn't and some people don't want to take the chance. It's the same way with children. A lot of servers do not want a table full of children or teenagers without their parents because they can end up spending a lot of time there talking over empty dishware asking for free refills if they can and then you get tipped 0 or like 1-2 bucks when you couldve made a lot more money for the restaurant and yourself. Serving/bartending is competitive work, your shifts depend on how much money you can pull in so stereotypes are taken seriously by many people working. And if you're a bad tipper who spends too much time at a table, NO ONE working who saw you that day will forget. And we will talk about whether or not we want to cover you sometimes and might pass you to another server who is more patient or who owes us a favor because we all know you tip low and spend too much time at the table, and will get us chewed out by management in some establishments. But anyway, if however you do tip nice, we will look the other way about you camping out for a long time chit chatting. ORRR if you keep ordering more and more stuff even if you don't tip at all, it still looks good to management and we won't get chewed out for low sales so some of us will look the other way.
I am black and I agree; blacks do not tip. I make it a point to tip 25-50% of the balance to make a statement. I have witness fellow blacks ordering $100s worth of food and drinks and literally tipping 1% of balance. I would not want to serve blacks either, lol.
I've always thought that while a lot of money can be made the restaurant/bar business, it is, after all, a tough business. I mean, dealing with the general public on a daily basis, especially when folks are under the influence or who are with a group. And I am NOT referring to this incident; I just mean in general. I think you need a special temperament to work in that atmosphere night after night. I'm sure that certain customers are a delight, but then they undoubtedly have their counterparts. I never did work in that field because I'm not cut out for it. But I did drive a cab in NYC one summer and years later drove a NYC bus, however. Both jobs were eye openers. They were draining. I'd start the night off positive, but finish off late at night aggravated and exhausted. Some people can make simple things way more difficult than they need to be. Some folks you just can not please. It's almost as if they want there to be a problem. AGAIN, I am not referring to this incident. I just mean dealing with John Q. Public in the big city...especially at night. Anyway, from those jobs dealing with the public, I experienced that in some jobs you can feel invisible. So I learned to acknowledge those who provide me a service, and in situations where tipping is expected, I try to tip generously. And lastly, I found your post to be interesting. It's interesting to hear work stories from those in different fields.
100 percent complain! What do you think this is China? You see wrong you complain, that's the American way. Now in addition to not getting their money, they won't get mine nor many others.
Nothing new. They do this when they don't want you there. It's a behavior to keep you from ever coming back.

0:47 I spy with my little eyes a red hooded sweater, what appears to be black sweatpants and behind him another hoodie in black. We may not see what he is seeing because it is a video. I think dress codes are stupid anyway. Dress code for school, dress code for work, dress code for church and dress code to go out and have a good time?? As long as there is no indecent exposure who cares what a paying customer wears.
LOL they got Lauren covering stories like this these days huh.
Wish we all got along but some people hold grudges too long lol
Here in California, they would have been arrested because racial discrimination is illegal in California
What were they wearing? Were their clothes covered in paint or something. Just curious.
They even said in the story that they were painting so prolly covered in dry paint. There is more to this story
Apparently such details aren't important to the news media....
People can and do have a change of clothes. Most people these days wear sweatpants because they're comfortable.
@@mcdjinn6975 if a restaurant has a dress code they can legally say sorry not gonna serve you. We are not getting the full picture here and it looked like a big ol place too and they got free service
@@mcdjinn6975 They can wear whatever they wanted. But since they mentioned others were let in wearing similar clothing. At least we should be able to see what clothing they were wearing.
Fire management and fine that business
I agree think there should be hefty fines for racism and discrimination like this
You can tell they used the "unfair treatment" angle to flat out not pay the bill. I mean they ate the food right? If they felt wrong, put in a complaint, but if you ate, pay for the food you consumed.
That's what you pulled from this detailed clip on discrimination? You may struggle with context, my friend....
Agreed, not saying the restaurant's behavior is acceptable, but not paying the bill is really showing bad light on these two.
This establishment acts like jersey city doesn’t have a huge black population. They don’t realize that a protest that turns left can quickly put an end to it.
Just got done painting man...go to McDonald's or change your clothes. Once again black people miss the memo.
They usually do. Just like Daunte Wright was a "good boy." Have you seen his rap sheet or the pictures of him flashing a hand gun and fanning out a bunch of cash on the stairs? Yeah, I'm sure all that cash came from him working an honest job..........
That is so unbelievable
NJ + Ny language: wanna wanna gonna um um uh racist wanna uh wanna
TELL AND SHOW THE WHOLE SYORY
@JAYLIN JARVIS Do you think that it's at all t possible that someone was covered in splattered paint clothes?
@JAYLIN JARVIS Where in the video can you see that? Are you suggesting that this report was filmed the very same day? Or that he wore the same clothes the next day?
I'm not trying to defend anything. I'm merely asking a question. I've found to be helpful to obtain details before I arrive at definitive conclusion about things, especially when they are controversial. What do you think about "CJ and his friends decided not to pay the bill" as reported in the piece? They ate there, but outside and decided not to pay their bill.
And to be clear, IF what this party claims is true, the restaurant is dead wrong. It's inexcusable.
@JAYLIN JARVIS
I SEE YOUR OWNERS HAVE YOU WELL TRAINED NOT TO THINK FOR YOURSELF... MAYBE YOU SHOULD WAIT FOR THE WHOLE PICTURE.
WAKE UP ... NOT WOKE UP .
@JAYLIN JARVIS As I say, I've watched it a number of times. Please tell me, at what point do you see the gentleman (CJ) at the restaurant when this occurred? Kindly furnish a time stamp.
Probably gonna say im racist but im not just going to states facts some blk people not all tend to be more rood loud and not tip compared to white people i know i will catch slack for this but its just facts
Now everyone going to see the swagless people walking in 😂
If anything a lot of store and restaurants needs to be boy cotted against definitely in evil, ruston, lousiana, family dollar store on citnary street in Shreveport, lousiana !!!! Evil lousiana needs to be boy cotted more than ever !!!!
Shut them down and do not spend your money with them. They are always sorry and are never racist.
How do you not pay the bill but still tip the waitress? Restaurants are going to have to charge up front from now on!
It’s true. You can’t just decide to not pay the bill. Though I’m quite sure the restaurant won’t seek payment either...
@Anne Toronto because they have every right not to, which is why the owner did not call the police. Stop and think, it's not that difficult to comprehend
Calm down Rufus, you "aint no" security
It's crazy that this is still going on, despite how many times it's been highlighted and restaurants receive bad pressed and are forced to issue an "apology." Glad that it was on film and that they got bad press. It's not the fact that there's a dress code, it's the fact that there's a double-standard and it's clear that it's only enforced as a way to keep blacks out. That said, if they ate the food, they should have paid the bill. Though, I wouldn't have tipped, and would explain to the waiter/waitress why.
One of the customers was the older sister of a guy in my class
Stop patronizing businesses that don't want you there. Support people that support YOU. Learn NOT the ways of the heathens.
What wrong? He never showed what he was wearing. He said he just came from painting. Was his clothes covered in paint stains?
Sad
How can it be clear when there are no photos of what he was wearing?
so they decided not to pay their bill, further cementing any racist outlook the restaurant may have had lol
Definitely needs to be boycott this is what happens all the time , they look at your skin color and immediately discriminate . Not even realizing sometimes you are more wealthy or educated than the others.
Once here in Malta I was working at a club and the management told us to make up excuses not to let black people or Arab-looking people
Group of friends: It’s about the principle
Private business : ???
The group of friends : hope they get an apology and boycott them.
Cancel culture
So, if I say I’m anti-ashford, does it make me racist? Because their statement seems to be a lieeeeeeeeeee 😂
Oh my god!! It's just so freaking ridiculous! Whats the name of his studio? Be sure to boycott it too.
Why would you keep spending your money where people don't want you
Honestly dress codes have always been weird to me...as long as they are wearing clothes why not serve them. Also dress codes are classist and racist. don't you want to have more customers and be more accessible.
Anyone in Jersey City, NJ who believes in Equal Justice and are against racism, should really consider staying away from the The Ashford Restaurant/Bar. I would, but I live in Los Angeles, CA. This story is sickening. Hello this is 2021 ! But then again racism, and race relations are going backwards in many places, and also in voting rights in "Red States".
race baiting
Leave that restaurant broke
How about businesses that let women in but not men ?
IT GRIEVES ME THAT A PLACE LIKE THIS IS IN EXISTENCE. I CAME IN THERE DRESSED NEAT ON A SUNDAY NIGHT WHERE BUSINESS WAS RELATIVELY SLOW........AS SOON AS I STEPPED IN THERE, THEY SICKED A 6'9 360 POUND BOUNCER ON ME TO HAVE ME TO SIT WELL OUT OF VIEW OF THE TELEVISIONS AFTER I ALREADY EXPRESSED TO THEM THAT I CAME THERE TO VIEW A FEW GAMES WITH A "S"....I was appalled by the over concern about seating although there were ample empty tables. ITS NICE TO BE IMPORTANT, BUT ITS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!!!!....HOPE THEY JUST GO AWAY!!!!
I wouldn't go back because ain't no telling what they will do to your food even if serve.
I'm not surprised
Now I know what restaurant I’m never going to. I need to see who their affiliates are so I know not to give business to them either.
fake news.
Didn't show anybody in that clip wearing sweatpants
Three hoodies and shorts.
But dude said because he had sweatpants
@@browntown607 one of them had sweatpants look again
This was like the people that were eating in the rain or even in freezing cold weather. 🙄
Why would you patronize a business that refuses you entry? Better yet why not just go home and change?
Two attention _____ is what this is, ALWAYS the “victims”
I see Yelp advertises “black owned” there you go be free.
I always dread going into one of these establishments.
Stay classy
@@shawnarguinsr.6545 But someone cared enough to respond to it, thanks for the exposure moron.
I'm going to go and if they do this to me, they will be exposed
All this for free food... come on bro
No. I'm not moving back to NYC...
Lawsuit!!!!
I'm tired of people leaning on the fact that "they are multi-racial", but obviously, they are not "multi-cultural". Big difference...
Don’t go there
In the Mafia movies Jersey is always a very racist place.
Don't go there that site
They don’t obey the laws and rules. The restaurant had the right to it
File lawsuit period!!!!
Over priced and pretentious.
If this happens don't complain, do not spend your money at these places come mi genti 🤑
100 percent complain! What do you think this is China? You see wrong you complain, that's the American way. Now in addition to not getting their money, they won't get mine nor many others.
