  • Crusaders Coach Rob Penney dropped a C-Bomb after his interview with a journalist from One News. Was he right to call the whole thing a disgrace? Or is this the price he pays for the losing record his team has in 2024

      The point is this competition solely exists to make money, and since NZR and ARU don't make a lot of money, there are more games to boost their revenue. Why are there more finals slots you ask? Simply put, they need more money.

    I'm sick of the brown nosing fans with their "we go again, always backing this team" BS comments. As crusaders fans, we should DEMAND excellence from this team because of the success. Enough with the injury and people leaving comments, this team is better than 2-10. Rob Penney is clearly delusional and doesn't care about actually winning, if he cared about the team he would resign for the good of the club. His overall super rugby record is something ridiculous like 7-26. The board needs to man up and actually sack him at the end of the season, admit they got it wrong, and bring in someone with a WINNING record who demands only the best for the team.

      As a landers fan, I would always have imagined that the Saders have earned a bit of credit in the back pocket with their fans. Possibly being the most successful rugby club in the world, ever. And they had a huge exodus, most of their key players have left. Coaching staff have all left minus two. Had injuries to remaining key players. There's so many moving parts to a performing team, blaming the coach seems odd to me.

Like most other Crusaders supporters I think we've been guilty of using words like ' rebuilding ' as some excuse for the results , and that is an extremely un - Crusader like way to think. Did Rob Penny have a good record elsewhere before the Saders job? I seem to remember a 2 Cents video speaking about his very mixed record. Why was he given the reigns of a top team then? I feel this result was inevitable…
    This is a very out there opinion but maybe the Saders board realised there is no other coach that will match what Scott Robinson did so they got a very average guy so the next coach who comes in can “fix” the situation and is at least appreciated by the fans.

  • @MikeH89
    @MikeH89 24 дні тому

    Start of the season wasn't too sure what to make of Penney. When he was at Munster, he tried to implement a wider and more attacking focussed game. But the best performances from the team during his tenure were when they reverted back to a tight, territorial style. Thought the tahs looked alright during his tenure, but some of that could be down to the players they had (many of whom are now at western force). Wouldn't be optimistic about the last few games or next season, but there has been so much disruption at saders this year it's probably not fair to assume the worst for next year.

  • @mauricegarvey4631

    Crusaders 2024 coach is a poison chalice thanks to the last 20 years and in recent years the highly successful Robertson era.
    Who can top that?
    Put Man City coach Guardiola in there and he would struggle as Penney is, understandably.
    It's tough, the transition will take time, but the jury is still out on Penney.
    I hope he makes it there but I don't think the timing is right for him or the club.

    • @Marius_vanderLubbe
      @Marius_vanderLubbe 24 дні тому

      There will be no transition. The puppy mill is ended. Grass roots rugby is in decline. People only care about the All Blacks and even them losing has become acceptable. The South Canterbury rugby team just pulled out of a shield challenge against Hawks Bay for lack of funds. Meanwhile the rugby union is all about diversity and bleeding the pot dry on overseas jaunts etc. I'm loathe to say it but it is over for rugby as we knew it. Nevermind, I had more than fifty years watching the greatest players ever.

    As a crusader fan I see what other fanbases see in some of us now lol... im starting to get annoyed with alot of them having a short 7 year goldfish memory, riding on that high and thinking default mode for us is always making the finals. In fact many times we finished the comp rounds outside the top 4... 2016 and 2015 we came 7th, 2001 we came 10th, 97' we were 6th and 96' we were 12th... Always was going to be a hard year and that is just conflated with the largest injury toll ive ever seen a rugby side needed to manage, a tricky draw and that dumb NH preseason tour that he inherited .. Give the coach at least one more season with his first choice players consistantly on the field! FFS we gave BlackAdder 8 years with out a result lol!

    As a retired journo, I back the c-bomber for having asked the hard questions. That's a journo's job. They're not marble-polishers. The Crusaders' stats took a severe knock, surprising fans and foes alike, and the hard questions needed to be asked. The onus was on Rob Penney to either concede "liability" or explain the reasons for the teams' demise, not to like or dislike questions. Cheers from Safferland chaps! 🇿🇦

  • @iallso1
    @iallso1 23 дні тому

    I thought the questions were pertinent, and that the responses were those of an immature person, not the head coach of a major sports franchise.

  • @NotSoProSpectator
    @NotSoProSpectator 22 дні тому

    Never understood the Penney appointment. Rumours are that Razor backed his appointment as they are old mates. But Penney's record as a coach is deplorable. His stint in Munster and Japan are average at best, and his record with the Tahs was shockingly poor. Penney has left teams in worse condition than when we found them, that is very much his narrative. The Saders have a squad that is much better than their position on the table. Game management and tactical nous are missing, and that sits with the coach. Honestly.....I hope you keep him. A shit Crusaders team makes rugby better!!

    Aside from the c bomb, it's clear this is related to coach/tactics. The stats, and my own eyes back it up, show that the cruz are winning enough possession and territory but not creating gaps in opponents defence. The attacking strategy is fundamentally flawed. I get that there's new players, but with the team named recently, that excuse is gone. These players are, imo, good enough.

Different captain every week almost! and some of the player selection is bonkers! Rob has to go. and Matt Todd as well. Nothing personal, they are great Canterbury rugby men. But the numbers and the play we see don't lie. But that begs another question? Who's the next coach? The Coach drain from NZR is bigger than the player drain!!

    Crusaders have had a great run and i would give Penny next year to redeem himself but if the results are still poor it will always reflect on his coaching. I agree that there are a lot of young new players in the squad and experienced players missing through injury but the defence has been well below accepted levels. I've seen some of these young players leave holes in the defensive line and run alongside opponents when they should be schooled to drill the opponent ball carrier into the ground asap ! . Penny has also made some strange substitutions during games and apart from a couple of games the gameplan has been poor. This team is lacking in the confidence to impose their gameplan on the opposition and appears indecisive or reactive to what is thrown at them. In any physical contest who hits first and hardest usually wins.
