  • Mixing guitars in a genre as dense with instrumentation as Death Metal can be difficult, but hopefully these few tricks I'm going to show you help you get your guitar tone sitting perfectly in the mix admist blast beats and bellowing vocals.

    I'm probably in a minority, but I'm way more interested in this type of video than endless gear demos. It's something anyone can learn and apply with stuff they already have and use rather than just demos of so much stuff there's no way anyone could even use all of it even if they somehow managed to obtain and keep it all.

      100% agree. Maybe I’m biased bc I’m about to begin recording and mixing demos for my deathcore project but I would love to see more mixing + mixing plugin videos

    definitely some insightful information out of this video in terms of how you do things. hella solid. interested to see how the approach be done with other guitar tones surrounding death metal.

    I also think that a good option for killer death metal tones is to make a blend between a tight, "modern" tone and a swedish death metal hm2 tone, you can use the plugins in parallel so you don't have to use 2 tracks for each guitar recording (or you can use 2 tracks for each tone and for each side and do the quad track recording)

    Maybe it's me, but I feel like having one of the guitars be the one you chose, and the other be one of the HM-2 blend style tones, would have been fun. I've always been more of a "different tones for the left and right" kinda guy. I usually like to blend different tones for the left and right, where I'll have 3 different tones, one that is used for both the left and the right, and then one different tone for each side. These days, at least one of those tones tends to be chainsaw, or some kind of distortion pedal or pedal combination, just something that will make the sound super dense and a bit more unique.

    Death metal is one of those genres when mixing you want it to be a muddy, yet clear as you can. At least for that old school sound. Very thick and scooped

    When you are mixing guitars and want to have a harmony part do you tend to just have them hard panned on a single guitar double tracked? Or would you treat it like 2 guitars, each double tracked and hard panned? I know a lot of people would say it's a matter of preference, but I'm interested in how you would approach it in your mixes! (Also, do you check in mono for phase issues mixing like this?)

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  2 місяці тому +1

      Checking mono for phase issues is a good practice for sure. I always do 2 guitars hard panned left and right... Quad tracking is very cool, but very time intensive, and you need to make sure that those takes are super tight or else it sort of makes the whole thing fall apart.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  2 місяці тому +2

      You can do that, it works well… as long as you can play the parts tight enough. If not, it will have the opposite of the intended effect

    Turn the gain all the way up. More gain = more metal. Take the mids completely out of the equation. Turn the bass all the way up. Bingo, metal.

    Tutorial request: Reaper, how to add midi track.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  2 місяці тому +1

      I'm not sure what you mean, every track in reaper is technically a midi track since reaper doesn't differentiate between audio and midi tracks. Any midi file you have you can drag and drop. More information please~!

    • @zakklee2556
      @zakklee2556 2 місяці тому

      @TaylorDanley I will try that. thank you. otherwise I am attempting to control helix presets/ snapshots, so I do not have a midi file to drag into track.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  2 місяці тому +1

      @@zakklee2556 Oh, then you have to use the piano roll to program your patch changes. It's tedious. I don't do it with the helix, but I have done it with the Axefx. To add a midi region, you hold command (idk windows, probably ctrl) and you should get a pencil, then you just draw in where you want the region to go.

      The other way you can add a new midi item is whilst having a time range selection up the top, and a track selected, go to the Insert menu then "New midi item"
