This was back in the times when Jell-o and pudding were actually still considered pretty luxurious foods because they're pretty hard to make from scratch.
In the early 1900s Jell-o (the brand) made the dessert ubiquitous and easy to prepare, but it still had a good reputation as a desirable food instead of just "junk". A Jell-o tower was the centerpiece of one of the first class meals on the Titanic for example.

Yeah, that guy (and his writer) doesn't understand how language works. Anime is just short for "animeshon" and is used for ALL animation, not just what's made in Japan, and regardless of style (especially since there are plenty of Japanese anime that don't have "anime style") while in English, anime generally means Japanese animation and animation styled after the most common Japanese styles (like ATLA)
Chai may just mean "tea" but we HAVE tea in English speaking places outside of India, but for most of them, "Chai" is used specifically to refer to an Indian style tea.

Here in norway we realise that if you manage a population known for violent tendencies. making them happier, more productive people helps. most parts of our prisons are run to let inmates improve themselves while in there. a really important part of this, is education. I had a social studies teacher once who had been a teacher in prison. and it's not just us, I believe at least sweden, finland and denmark are mostly similar with their prisons
if mike sees this, I hope he makes/has made a short on this kinda thing.

The civilised world has realised retributive justice does not work and tries to do restorative justice instead, where the goal of prison is not punishment but a successful reintegration of a convict into society.
Scandinavia is maybe furthest down the road to making that change.

THIS! Reintegration into society is so important! If you set excons up to fail in society as soon as they get out, then you will just make them commit crimes again.
In Germany it's fairly common that prisoners can even go out of prison for the day, when they have served part of their sentence. And there is also educational programs and social worker helping you set up your life after prison. So when you get out, you actually have a chance to contribute in society by working and having contact with people who are not criminals.
For U.S. this is somehow a very strange concept and even teenagers dont actually get help while in prison. Thinking people need to be punished is such an old way if thinking and also the moral level of young kids. Consequences are much more effective: you do bad things, you need to be taken out of your enviroment for some time and you have to deal with what you have done (therapy, counseling etc). That might be annoying but needs to be done. Some people might even "enjoy" the structure and the help they get in prison, because they have not had that experience growing up. And if they do, then how is that bad? Retribution is not the solution in my opinion.

It's quite simple really. Given people with very little a luxury and threaten to take it away if they act out of line. We also do it with kittens and inmates. Harden Prisoners bond with the kittens and will do anything to not be separated from them. It produces very compliant people. It's also why people stay at abusive dead-end jobs.

I didn't think of this before... Thank you for enlightening me. It is true, giving poor people temporary luxury and taking it away if they don't comply is a good tactic to get people to gradually not think about committing crime ... Until they no longer think and act like a criminal. But how effective this hope that the luxury can be achieved after their imprison, and if they choose to come back of free will ... Hard to tell.

    • @PrayingPanda
      @PrayingPanda 9 днів тому +1

@Iris-r6o it has to be realistically within their grasp. This isn't some far off baby carrot dangling. That will lead people to revert to trying the quick and illegal way. But if you train people to do something that can restore their honor/dignity along with the promise of a decently paying job, you'll get people to reintegrate easier. Out west some inmates are trained to be firefighters but unfortunately when they get out most are ineligible because of their felon status...imagine that. As an inmate, you can help fight fires with limited equipment compared to real fire fighters, you could have the experience, but when you get out you can't get a job because many depts don't hire felons...

Stop lying right now. They are fined every DAY and MEAL they are there. Stats make BILLIONS in revenue just off jail fines (you are literally given a bill for your stay). Much less prisons.
Your grossly uneducated on what our FOR PROFIT system is if you actually think taxpayers carry the bill here.

We honestly need a prison that houses strong punishment but also stronger rehabilitation.
Make the punishment strong so the inmates feel like crap. But also make the rehabilitation very good so the inmates become reformed.
Have inmates with a decent prison job. Say this inmate works at cooking and cleaning up. Earning 10 dollars per hours. The system takes away 30 to 40% of the money. No further tax after that take away as that portion goes back to the system. Then 1/2th to 2/3rds of the remaining cash is saved into the inmates account. So when the inmates serves their sentence they get to have it in installments. A way to learn how to budget the cash. The last remaining cash that is still in hand. The inmate can use to buy food, drinks, and services like the Internet.
You do want the inmates to pay for their crimes committed. But at the same time if you reform them. They will not have to commit crime again.
If you do this correctly the reoffending rate will be moderately low. You cannot fix every inmate as some are just lost causes. But the average inmate will properly reform if given the chance.

There's also a difference between the ideas behind prisons in different countries. I've understood that in the USA, prison is to punish the wrongdoers, kinda leave them there, and forget them. But for example, in Northern Europe, the prisons work more with the idea that prisoners relearn how to work as a part of the community. It's to lead them to straighter paths and make them realise why the thing they did was wrong... 🤔

If you keep them calm and healthy, I don't see the problem. The healthier you are, the better you can manage pain and emotions. And the better your environment is, the better your emotions are and same goes for health. Emotions and health are connected. Think of it as a form of rehabilitation. It keeps them from fighting too I'm assuming. It's amazing what food can do.
