One important thing to note about Alcatraz, because of the fact that it was on an island, the guards would stay there long-term and ate the same food as the inmates.
WELCOME TO CALL OF DUTY!!!
So it was also to keep the guards happy. I mean if I was stuck eating prison food I'd want something better. I mean you might as well make good food. I mean especially if you're stuck eating it.
Yeah, nothing more gormet than chili dogs and pudding
@@pauldzim Mike really downplayed the Alcatraz menu. They'd often have stuff like croquettes, herb-crusted pork chops, jambalaya, etc. with a choice of a soup of the day and desserts like freshly made cakes and pies, though yes they did dine on pudding and Jell-o as well.
This was back in the times when Jell-o and pudding were actually still considered pretty luxurious foods because they're pretty hard to make from scratch.
In the early 1900s Jell-o (the brand) made the dessert ubiquitous and easy to prepare, but it still had a good reputation as a desirable food instead of just "junk". A Jell-o tower was the centerpiece of one of the first class meals on the Titanic for example.

The best part is that the prisons who give their prisoners decent meals, or just treat them decently in general, have extremely low reincarceration rates.
This is the thing, people want prisoners to be punished so have horrible prisons, but if you do that you are almost guaranteeing they'll reoffend. Here in norway we realise that if you manage a population known for violent tendencies. making them happier, more productive people helps. most parts of our prisons are run to let inmates improve themselves while in there. a really important part of this, is education. I had a social studies teacher once who had been a teacher in prison. and it's not just us, I believe at least sweden, finland and denmark are mostly similar with their prisons
if mike sees this, I hope he makes/has made a short on this kinda thing.
The civilised world has realised retributive justice does not work and tries to do restorative justice instead, where the goal of prison is not punishment but a successful reintegration of a convict into society.
Scandinavia is maybe furthest down the road to making that change.
There's a great TED talk about this by a US state attorney called Jeffrey Rosen, comparing US and German prisons.
yeah and Norway has the highest deaths by mass shooting per capita out of any country on earth
Might not really work for religious fanatics like we have in EU though
@@nightlust everyone deserves a humane and respectful treatment.
In the US you always here harsher punishments.. has that worked? Even the death penalty does not deter anyone.
THIS! Reintegration into society is so important! If you set excons up to fail in society as soon as they get out, then you will just make them commit crimes again.
In Germany it's fairly common that prisoners can even go out of prison for the day, when they have served part of their sentence. And there is also educational programs and social worker helping you set up your life after prison. So when you get out, you actually have a chance to contribute in society by working and having contact with people who are not criminals.
For U.S. this is somehow a very strange concept and even teenagers dont actually get help while in prison. Thinking people need to be punished is such an old way if thinking and also the moral level of young kids. Consequences are much more effective: you do bad things, you need to be taken out of your enviroment for some time and you have to deal with what you have done (therapy, counseling etc). That might be annoying but needs to be done. Some people might even "enjoy" the structure and the help they get in prison, because they have not had that experience growing up. And if they do, then how is that bad? Retribution is not the solution in my opinion.
It's quite simple really. Given people with very little a luxury and threaten to take it away if they act out of line. We also do it with kittens and inmates. Harden Prisoners bond with the kittens and will do anything to not be separated from them. It produces very compliant people. It's also why people stay at abusive dead-end jobs.
The fishing and other activities like that can also help prisoners to fit better into society when they come back
I didn't think of this before... Thank you for enlightening me. It is true, giving poor people temporary luxury and taking it away if they don't comply is a good tactic to get people to gradually not think about committing crime ... Until they no longer think and act like a criminal. But how effective this hope that the luxury can be achieved after their imprison, and if they choose to come back of free will ... Hard to tell.
@Iris-r6o it has to be realistically within their grasp. This isn't some far off baby carrot dangling. That will lead people to revert to trying the quick and illegal way. But if you train people to do something that can restore their honor/dignity along with the promise of a decently paying job, you'll get people to reintegrate easier. Out west some inmates are trained to be firefighters but unfortunately when they get out most are ineligible because of their felon status...imagine that. As an inmate, you can help fight fires with limited equipment compared to real fire fighters, you could have the experience, but when you get out you can't get a job because many depts don't hire felons...

Remember that prisons are meant to keep dangerous people away from harmless ones, not to torture them

Yeah, the official term for prison sentences in German law is "deprivation of freedom" and that doesn't just mean prison cell, it generally means that you cannot decide yourself anymore what you do or do not do. Like, what you suddenly have to do: Learn a trade and go to therapy.

Don't care. They're being treated better than the average law abiding citizen. Those same citizens whose rights they abused which landed them in prison in the first place.

@@thelemurofmadagascar9183Freedom is the biggest right every citizen has, and taking that away already makes someone have drastically less rights than the average citizen.
Even if a prison fed prisoners luxury meals everyday, theyd still have less rights than the average citizen because they dont have freedom. Theyre stuck in there. Bored. Forced to contemplate their actions. No reason to be violent because of their treatment.
This leads to low recidivism rates, which is good for overall society.
If you think about it, prison exists mainly to keep bad people from running lose in society. This good food approach could help prevent prison breaks, which keeps these bad people from entering society before they’ve changed for the better. We need more rehabilitation services for prisoners.
Yes. People need to see food as a preemptive security expense, and a tool of control.
Can take away the good food for punishment.
I am all for that. In fact prisoners should be growing their own food too. Those always seemed like the best prisons I have seen toured. Not as many problems as others.
Exactly in the US we focus way way to much on punishment where when the I divide all is released, the majority end up right back in prison I think it is above 50 percent.
While for Norway for example it is rare for someone to end up back in prison since they focus on the rehabilitation
Because norway understands that prison shouldn't be a business. Treating prisoners like human beings, and providing skill training and
ACTUAL rehabilitation; eliminates the probabilty of repeat offenders.
Its not just that. Food is like one of the few things a prisoner gets to appreciate or enjoy in most part of the world, these people are in general more violent and have MANY more disorders than average people, a flat out awful meal could easily among that many people like that be enough to cause anger at least or violence at worst over something needless.

But, the prisons in norway work.
1. No one tries to escape, cuz why would u
2. Most people return to society as a better version of themselves afterwards. (Bcuz, you know. There were treated like human being and not like garbage?!(Yes I am looking at you america))
the person responsible for over 100 deaths (utøya) has his own room in jail with a tv, xbox and basketball court
Alcatraz? So the map of the Codm tournaments Alcatraz is real? And it's a prison? Poahhhhh.
the cop:what do we use to make sauce for the prawns and fish balls?...its CO-☠️
We honestly need a prison that houses strong punishment but also stronger rehabilitation.
Make the punishment strong so the inmates feel like crap. But also make the rehabilitation very good so the inmates become reformed.
Have inmates with a decent prison job. Say this inmate works at cooking and cleaning up. Earning 10 dollars per hours. The system takes away 30 to 40% of the money. No further tax after that take away as that portion goes back to the system. Then 1/2th to 2/3rds of the remaining cash is saved into the inmates account. So when the inmates serves their sentence they get to have it in installments. A way to learn how to budget the cash. The last remaining cash that is still in hand. The inmate can use to buy food, drinks, and services like the Internet.
You do want the inmates to pay for their crimes committed. But at the same time if you reform them. They will not have to commit crime again.
If you do this correctly the reoffending rate will be moderately low. You cannot fix every inmate as some are just lost causes. But the average inmate will properly reform if given the chance.
i want life in prison in norway
Nah💀
Norway is way too peaceful with its prisoners. You can’t just give them a mansion as a jail cell and luxury food and call it a day
"Chai-tea?? That like saying coffee-coffee!!"
"WHITE SAUCE"
wwhite saaauce
There's also a difference between the ideas behind prisons in different countries. I've understood that in the USA, prison is to punish the wrongdoers, kinda leave them there, and forget them. But for example, in Northern Europe, the prisons work more with the idea that prisoners relearn how to work as a part of the community. It's to lead them to straighter paths and make them realise why the thing they did was wrong... 🤔
Masamuni?

Is anyone gonna talk abt mike dancing "I gEt MoNeY i'M a StAr"
If you keep them calm and healthy, I don't see the problem. The healthier you are, the better you can manage pain and emotions. And the better your environment is, the better your emotions are and same goes for health. Emotions and health are connected. Think of it as a form of rehabilitation. It keeps them from fighting too I'm assuming. It's amazing what food can do.
Well, some prisons understand that treating prisoners like shit has something to do with petty crooks turning into hardened criminals
A wise man once said: break rules ya go to prison, break the prison rules and you go to alkatraz.
Bro I live in South Carolina. Imma find that prison and order a cake.
If you’re somehow homeless in norway getting arrested here is actually a pretty good idea
Keeping prisoners happy is how a prison should run less focus on punishment and more focus on healing and rehabilitation
Now we can really say to school food "Prison food is better then this.."
Hot take, prisoners shouldn't be treated like nobility.
What’s going on is outside of America most non dictator countries believe that where possible they should at least try to rehabilitate criminals.
