Tuga to the rescue!!! I'd leave the walnut on ground, maybe you could come up with some sort of liquid feeder up in the tree where walnut was?? Or a dish for fruit/insects.
I think the alternative with the walnut nest is great, small and yet big for the ants and left natural, I'll try this out on my next colony. keep us updated plz. greez from iceland

Liquid feeder will be hard. But as you can see i put a small dish on the top leaves already :D

Did you emptied the walnut or you just drilled a hole ?
I boiled it. It opend. I used some natural glue to close it. Then drilled a hole. They can still eat the nut, if they want.
