He snores?? I didn't think he can get any more adorable. :) That is seriously the most adorable puppy i've seen in years. And no, i don't think you're being paranoid, just careful. Paranoid would mean you'd hire a patrol sized boat to shadow you guys in case of emergency. Making sure you've covered at least one axis in case of emergency is common sense.
One more thing, Thank you for taking the time to add the like in the description. That really helps us find the items and makes it so easy just to click and learn more.
Thanks for the very in depth review. You certainly did your research relative to the support each device would have. You are not being paranoid....you are preparing for the worst. That is prudent. It also means that my being prepared "Murphys Law" states you will never need to use any of it!
Great insight into who receives the notification once activated. I haven't had a use for one yet so I never took it the next mental step to worry about who would actually be saving me, but now i know!
You really helped me to determine what it is I need on my sailboat as I travel across the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks, I'm going to try to come by those exact same products.
I like the safety gear that is available hope you never have an occasion to use them deploying them will be a last resort and don't forget to say a prayer while in the big water for a safe trip
Thanks ! That is good info to know that will no doubt save lives ! Yokull thought he needed to put on his flotation device if you were going to wear yours !LOL ! He figured if you were getting ready to jump overboard he was going with you !
+James Behringer Thank you so much :) What kind of lights did you have in the navy? :) I've never seen anything like these Lume-On lights before. I don't know how big of a difference they make in real life rescue but it sure seems like a good idea :)
I worked on a carrier flight deck. We were equipped with a single "C" cell light with a clear dome over the lamp, the unit safety pinned to our vests, circa 1977. Think match in a breeze. Make it a great voyage next month!!
Another great video - Thanks again Madds! We really do appreciate all of the info. I hope to see a review of that PFD - I was following right along when I saw you trying to put the PLB into the PFD - everything looked familiar, but when you manually inflated the PFD for the demo, well I don't remember seeing a PFD quite like that before. I'm still gathering my kitty and hoping to hit the Gulf of Mexico full time in about 3 years- that is why learning all I can now is of so much help. Thanks again!
Excellent video, I have seen the RescueMe advertised but never really appreciated how small it is. Of course, in a less dire emergency you can send a descriptive message with the Inreach too (to your shore contact to pass on rather than GEOS). Lastly, I have spent this week in Denmark (leaving tomorrow) and must say that I have been treated with exceptional hospitality. I had been worried that I didn't speak a work of Danish - but that seems to be no problem. All of the Danish people I met were super helpful - a very nice country (good to hear you trust the search and Rescue too!).
Mads, always use a pump to manually inflate your lifejacket. Breath introduces moisture to the inside, which is not a good idea! Lights look like a great idea though!
This is why I love you're channel... I never would have thought of the LED lights on a PFD. Great option for visibility! I've been looking at so many boats lately for live aboard that I think I should start my own channel LOL!. Heading to Miami tomorrow to look at an Irwin 41 center cockpit.
+fish7400 Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy my channel :) If you think you might enjoy publishing videos you should go for it! I've had a ton of fun over the last year and half. I wish I had gotten started sooner :)
Hi Mads, I've been following your channel for a while and I really appreciate your product reviews. I especially like how you include explanations of what things are (i.e. epirb & PLB) and how they work. For someone who has been lake sailing and close coastal cruising for several years, many of those types of items are only slightly familiar to me. But I'm in the process of refitting an Alberg 30 for extended cruising so many of the products you review will someday need to be in my inventory. Your explanations are great. In fact shortly after you did the video about the DeLorme InReach SE, ActiveCaptain had a Defender First special on the InReach SE & Explorer. Thanks to your video, I felt confident in purchasing the Explorer even though it will be a few years before I really need it. Keep up the great work, stay safe on your Atlantic crossing, and if you ever find yourself in Utah, shoot me an email, I'd love to take you out on the Great Salt Lake (if we ever get more water). --Chip
+TheSpartanKingReece That would be awesome! I had a hard time figuring out whether or not PLBs are actually supported in all SAR zones. I read somewhere that wasn't the case but I was unable to figure out what happens if you activate a PLB in a SAR zone that doesn't support PLB's. I know some countries have odd regulations or procedures when it comes to PLB's (like Brazil). Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated :)
Hi Mads, Glad to see you are carrying a PLB... I have a ACR unit but yours looks a little more compact. Glad you have done the research and I love those Lume-On lights, they look really good and compact compared to the strobe I carry. If you need any reassurance as to why you should be carrying a PLB google "Andrew Taylor Clipper yacht race"
+wilsnich02 Yikes! After having read about Andrew Taylor I'm doubly glad I decided to purchase a PLB! I believe the RescueME PLB1 is currently the smallest PLB available. Having said that I wouldn't mind carrying the ACR unit either :)
According to what I've read about the McMurdo FastFind PLB the distress signal is routed through the country the PLB is registered in. I'm not sure it's the same for the Ocean Signal Rescue ME but I'd imagine that's the case since they use essentially the same technology.
You should be careful with PLB and the line you attached. Since you have automatic PFD, it will inflate the PFD when you go to the water and the bang is hard and it might break the line if it is stuck somewhere. Maybe it is not a problem, but that's what came in mind if I looked at the position of the PLB and the line and the tape on the line...think about it...
Hey Mads,Thank you for the great reviews. You did say that the spinlock lights were about $20 US however you didn't say anything about the cost of the PLB. I think that adding the cost of the items in the review really help complete the full picture. Thank you for your videos and all the reviews you do. How about doing a review on your PFD?
+Don Harden Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment :) I'll certainly do my best to remember to add the price in any future reviews. I think the PLB was about $400 US. I've added a review of my Spinlock 5D to the list of upcoming vides :)
Great review of these. I agree, the process behind the button push is critical. You don't want to find yourself having to use it and wondering if someone is "in today" at the "emergency response shack". Your dog (jorkle SP?) seems to have acclimated well to life aboard Obelix. Nice to see. Does he have his own PFD and PLB? :-)
With all your personal safety gear, you will be the best prepared sailor aboard Fiona when you depart. Mr. Forsyth should be impressed. Please let us know what he thinks.
Hi Mads, I was curious about your comment about "programming the MMSI number'" into both the epirb and plb. As I understand it, there is no actual programming to do in the unit regarding the MMSI. The unit has a special ID number and when you register it, the MMSI number is linked to this ID number in the SAR database. I believe this is true of epirbs but may be different for plbs.
For coastal voyages, it is better to use MOB1. He will give a DSC alarm signal to the radio station and coordinates to the AIS device to your captain. He only needs to turn the yacht and follow the mark on the monitor. The fastest rescue! PLB1 is good in the ocean, but salvation will be long. If you just drop overboard in bad weather. The device will not be able to coordinate your captain in any way. Unfortunately. And besides, the yacht always has EPIRB, why should it be duplicated by another device ?
I know this video is from quite a while ago, but assuming these Lume-on lights were that in-expensive I might be inclined to go a little overkill and attach a second pair of these doubling the light output. and I would imagine the brighter the better.
That looks like an awesome PFD. I have never seen a face shield like that, it seems like a great idea for when you are in the water and being pounded by waves. Have you blogged about whom else, if anyone, will be also crewing on this trip?
+craigleemehan I'm very pleased with my Spinlock Deckvest 5D so far :) Fingers crossed I won't ever need the hood! I believe it's also meant to keep the foam that forms during high winds out of your lungs. On the trip across the Atlantic, it'll be Eric (Captain), Tom (crew) and myself (crew). I figure I'll introduce the crew once I'm aboard Fiona (provided they are up for it) :)
Nice going on the reviews, I didn't know the PLB could be programmed with MMSI. did it have to be done at the manufacturer or were you able to program it yourself?
Hi Mads, very informative video, thanks! About to order some Spinlock Lume-ons, such an easy and cheap way to increase your chances of rescue. One question for you and others is: do you feel that the PLB provides a greater level of safety than the "SOS" button on your inreach SE? Have an amazing trip!
HI Mads. Just bought the PLB1 this weekend as it was on a good deal... (and I don't trust some of my crew to turn back and get me if I fall overboard)! How do I get it programmed with my boat MMSI number??? Nothing in the instructions about that.
Do you also have an emergency life raft on board. Or it may sound daft because I have no idea but a dog life vest? Also another great video, keep it up :).
Hi Mads, some peaple probably asked U this question, sorry in that case... I'm wandering how you'll manage with your friendly dog during your ocean crossing. Doesn't he need to walk on ground every day for his natural needs ?
Sorry to be uninformed but can having a device linked to one vessel while using it on another vessel cause any sort problems or delay? Cool dog. Is there any idea what percentage of sailors have a device like that on their vest whenever on deck and underway?
+Jacob Broadbent That is was indeed ;) I've mentioned it very quickly in a previous video but if you blinked you might have missed it ;) Perhaps I should start putting in a few teasers in each video :P
Rigtig god video👍🏻 Kan man selv registre den Ocean Signal RescueMe PLB1 du demonstrer i Danmark vist man køber enheden over nette fra et måske ukendt land.
I emailed Ocean Signal to get a confirmation on how the distress signal is routed, here's the cut and paste from the reply. " Your PLB1 sends a signal to the satellite system, This is received by ground stations who will confirm the signal and immediately forward to the SAR in the country the beacon is coded for (and registered). The SAR will then do what is necessary through your emergency contacts to confirm the alert and follow up. As soon as a position is established, wither from the GPS being available in the signal or from other information, the event will be transferred to the region the alert is from. I think you are breaking lots of SAR rules by programming a PLB with your boats MMSI. I have two MMSI's for my vessel and for my portable DSC vhf radio. The vessel one is for the vhf, hf and ais. And the portable one is disassociated with the vessel ( in the tender etc). Your vessel is in Denmark yet by you doing what you have done by programming a Danish MMSI into a Plb and expecting it to be recorded in Portugal is simply setting you up for any report received to be treated as an error and be ignored as an error. It's one thing to risk your live doing such a foolish thing but you should not encourage other people to do such a thing. Please Talk with the Danish authorities about what you have done before suggesting others follow your lead. I have both the Plb and the spin lock pfd and they are great
What you say makes sense and the reply someone got from Ocean Signal confirms that I think. I was surprised they the unit was able to be re programmed and that someone actually did it. I have one and registration asks for the UIN and Serial number and the unit was purchased in the UK so the routing will be via the UK. Not something to play around with reprogramming devices if that is not the correct procedure.

Very informative Mads. Thanks for showing what the vest looks like when inflated and lit up.
I use the lights to attract great whites. Works perfect, would not go photographing without them... ;)
+Brian Richardson Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found the products intriguing :)
That's the best video you have made! Informative and comedy as well! Good luck packing the lifejacket (pfd) back in!
Steve
Great video you really get over the essence of the products the lights for the vest are very impressive and are on my sopping list.
First class information once again Mads, good luck on your passage!
You are one of the most informative people here on YT, well done.
I like the safety gear that is available hope you never have an occasion to use them deploying them will be a last resort and don't forget to say a prayer while in the big water for a safe trip
awesome lights!! Josephine says hi!!!!
+David Cannamela Hi you two ;) I'm SO much looking forward to some burgers in about two months! :D
Thanks for the demonstration! We think the lifejacket suits you very well and is (aside from providing safety) very fashionable :)
+Two aboard Tuuli Haha, thanks you two :D
Thanks ! That is good info to know that will no doubt save lives !
Yokull thought he needed to put on his flotation device if you were going to wear yours !LOL ! He figured if you were getting ready to jump overboard he was going with you !

Helpful and always fun to watch..
Ukul ko'd on the bench makes this video like-worthy alone! But there's so much more too :)
Great info! Your really getting into all the safety stuff, hope you never need it.

Good video.
I'm planning to buy a PLB for hiking and land travel -- in case I get lost anywhere in the world.
I cant wait to see the out takes with the spray hood up!!LOL
+David Pipenger Haha, I'll dig through the footage and see if there is something funny there ;)
Good video, cool items.
Now, lets see the dogs floating device and lights, please.

Do I need to say that the yacht is your very best life raft - well until that moment it is under the surface and heading down.

Do you also have a life vest for your beautiful companion (dog)? If so, please give your opinion on why you picked the life vest for him.
HI Mads. Just bought the PLB1 this weekend as it was on a good deal... (and I don't trust some of my crew to turn back and get me if I fall overboard)! How do I get it programmed with my boat MMSI number??? Nothing in the instructions about that.
Great demo Mads... lets hope you never find out for real if your research is right
As usual!
Do you also have an emergency life raft on board. Or it may sound daft because I have no idea but a dog life vest? Also another great video, keep it up :).
Thumbs up!
+skipper99991 Thank you so much! :)

Sorry to be uninformed but can having a device linked to one vessel while using it on another vessel cause any sort problems or delay? Cool dog. Is there any idea what percentage of sailors have a device like that on their vest whenever on deck and underway?
Great vid! In the end you looked like a head with two blinking yellow lungs 😂
+hammarsmail Haha, thanks! ;)
was that a custom sail life engraved knife?
Did I miss an episode or was that a well placed teaser ;)
+Jacob Broadbent That is was indeed ;) I've mentioned it very quickly in a previous video but if you blinked you might have missed it ;) Perhaps I should start putting in a few teasers in each video :P

Could you compare the SPOT too?
Rigtig god video👍🏻
Kan man selv registre den Ocean Signal RescueMe PLB1 du demonstrer i Danmark vist man køber enheden over nette fra et måske ukendt land.
Hope this helps clarify.
It looks to me like my initial impressions were correct in that it works the same way as the Fast Find, so it's the Search and Rescue in your home country who instigate/coordinate any rescue operation from the SAR nearest to the distress signal.

hey i have followed all your videos and was very interested in your inreach and pulled up your inreach site and zoned in close and the your slip was empty but it looks like you motoring south east take a look and see if that's you?
What's the hood for? Rain? But, you're in the water, why worry about rain? What else?
as far as survival goes ..you should get a immersion suit because when they find you..you might be alive.
Ha, look at Euclid sleeping through this review.. maybe you need to start talking about Dog epirb
;-)
LOL for someone so safety conscious, you should be cutting away from you...
IT I S A VERY BAD IDEA for you to promote a breach of the international GMDSS system because you think that Danish authorities are better than Portuguese authorities.
It's one thing to risk your live doing such a foolish thing but you should not encourage other people to do such a thing. Please Talk with the Danish authorities about what you have done before suggesting others follow your lead.
