This is a really clear and informative video and I learned a lot but all I can think about is “it’s Ashford himself, the final boss you have to battle to become a true master of textiles”
This is the best spinning video I've ever watched. Although it doesn't address the beginners laments of "Why does my yarn have pigtails? or Why does my yarn feel like wire?", it does show (very nicely) the rhythm of pedaling while drafting. Thank you for posting such a nice video!
THANK YOU for these videos! Just bought my first wheel-- the Joy 2. I've been drop spindling for years, but wanted a wheel since I was a kid (more than 20 years!) I'm so happy with my new wheel!
Absolutely clear as crystal! I've watched this and how to ply. I'm waiting for some Shetland tops to try spinning on my granny's spinning wheel which came to me. Thanks to your videos I feel like I know what I'm doing - enough to make a start anyway :-)
If you notice the thread twisting up into your fiber just pinch and counter twist a little and start drafting. I actually just slightly counter twist to be sure my fiber remains open enough to easily draft. I let go and don't keep my fingers pinched but keep my fingers on the fibers. Slightly counter twist and it is fast and smooth. Im learning on Llama fiber.
This immediatly showed me how a spinner works, and i am 1:44 in. I am reading about the industrial revolution, and wanted to know how "the spinning jenny" could improve dramatically the textile production.
I am excited to hear that your favourite is the Kiwi, after much debating i will order one after the weekend. I spun for years on a traditional one then foolishly gave it away when i moved. Only question is ...is double treadle easy to get used to, i have arthritis?
Long ago all yarn was made like this, but not anymore. Most commercial yarn today is spun by machine. But many artisanal yarns are hand spun. They are usually expensive, and will tell you they are handspun.
Hi I have a ashford traditional spinning wheel and I am a beginner I have a problem with the cord popping off the whorl when I am trying to ply going in the counter clock wise. It seems to pop off at the knot so what can I do? Thank you
Those hooks appear to be a standard household items....do you know if there was an active effort to preserve access to the best style of hook for those machines by making said hooks available affordably for common household use?...or are modern hobby machines made by sourcing said affordable hooks?....thanks for the video regardless...very very cool stuff
I am Mohamed from Syria. I am an expert in spinning wool and made carpets on the loom. I inherited this made from my grandmother and I wish I could have such a beautiful work.
I'm having the same problem, it just won't spin onto the bobbin & then the pigtails come. Have you discovered any help on this? I don't know which adjustments to make either.
Saaame! It's so frustrating. I don't know what's wrong. I was given a super old spinning wheel that was my grandma's. The drive strings occasionally pop off too. I'm wondering if the issues are related.
Now, two years later, I’ve just learned to fiddle with it each time I spin, tighten this, loosen that till it works. Mine is early 70’s. From my aunty. No exact settings. I love her though.
I purchased the traveller spinning wheel and I think I assambled it like it was said in the instructions. But I can only spin anti-clockwise with it, it doesn't twist the thread if spinning clockwise, it only pulls it. I can just not figure out what is going wrong there :( I think it has something to do with the break, but there is only one way to semble it up...
Hi there, I'm a new to spining area and I just bought Ashford E-Spinning Wheels. Wondering if the machine can ply the fabric strips, about 1/2 inch stipes? I'm interested to plies 2 strands of the yarn ball together (I have lots of thin yarn and would like to make it bulkier but not as bulky as the art yarn do), sorry my bad english. Thanks :)
Freshdeeee i have done what your suggesting and the yarn is slightly to stiff/thick for the wheel but if your ok with helping the bobbin take on the yarn by turning it with your hands you should be able to
I have an Ashord traditional spinning wheel that has never been used. It sat in the garage for the 20 years. Recently I had it assembled and tainted. When I tried spinning with it, all the wheels turned. But the yarn is not collecting onto the bobbin. The yard kept twisting outside. What should I do?
How does the bobbin take up the fiber? I've just built a Saxony spinning wheel which has a double drive. The bobbin spins slightly faster. Is the bobbin and flyer spinning at the same speed here?
They spin at the same speed if you hold the yarn from going in. The bobbin spins slightly faster as you allow the yarn to be taken in to wrap the yarn around the bobbin.
Hiya ! I'm french so sorry for my bad english...I tried to spin yarn on a wheel, I've got alpaga fiber, after a few hours my yarn was pretty, but when I get off the yarn of the bobine everything fall apart !!!! I turn the wheel in the clockwise, my tension was good I think, the yarn was correct. Have you an idea ? Thank you ! *
Hi, I am sure your English is better than my French :-) Did you ply your yarn? What do you mean it fell apart? The yarn? You should spin your singles in a clockwise direction then ply together in anti-clockwise. Enjoy
I'm gonna scream, I just realized the reason my wheel never seemed to work for me for four years is because I put the part where the drive band goes at the back and not the front
Hi Karin, You can spin anything on a Kiwi 2....it is not the wheel that determines the yarn, it is the spinner. The Kiwi is my favourite wheel and I have spun all kinds of fibres on it. Happy spinning :-)

And if you lose you get turned into a spider obviously
Our battle will be legendary

Hi Mr Ashford Im Khalid from Jakarta, Indonesia. That is good tutorial, I use your video in my textile class. Thank you.
This is the best video I’ve seen explaining how to spin wool! Thank you!

The best video I've seen explaining how to start on the wheel. Thank you!
This is very informative. I wish I had seen it when I was first spinning.
Wow! He makes it looks so simple!
Seems very relaxing! Love that.
I love that fiber color!!!

I wish I could afford a spinning wheel... I fell in love with the Ashford kiwi a few years ago.. So lovely.
Wonderful video! I can't wait for my spinning wheel to arrive in the mail. Lets see if I can spin so effortlessly.
You make that look so easy. 😩
I just bought a used Ashford Traditional. So different from my Kromsky Saxony. Going to be interesting to see how differently they spin.
This immediatly showed me how a spinner works, and i am 1:44 in.
I am reading about the industrial revolution, and wanted to know how "the spinning jenny" could improve dramatically the textile production.

I just bought the Kiwi 2 and I have the sliding hook flyer. I'd love to see a tutorial for how to set it up.
I am hopeless but determined to learn will keep you imformed
wonderful video. is all the wool yarn I buy spun like this? or spun?
Long ago all yarn was made like this, but not anymore. Most commercial yarn today is spun by machine. But many artisanal yarns are hand spun. They are usually expensive, and will tell you they are handspun.

I wish for a video discussing the adjustments. My bobbin won’t take up and wheel is over spinning. Which adjustments do what? Thanks
I'm having the same problem, it just won't spin onto the bobbin & then the pigtails come. Have you discovered any help on this? I don't know which adjustments to make either.

Do your pinching fingers get sore or ever bleed? Do you have let your fingers form callouses?
My yarn spins too tight and curls up, what can I do?
I am haven't the same problem
Me too!
❤thank you for the information
I love this video ❤️❤️
You make it look so easy. :)

Same problem here, have you figured it out yet? Please let me know if you do.
It's been a year, so I'm sure you've figured it out, but have you made sure the tension band is adjusted properly?
Who invented Spinning Wheel ?
Are there subtitles?
How does the bobbin take up the fiber?

They spin at the same speed if you hold the yarn from going in. The bobbin spins slightly faster as you allow the yarn to be taken in to wrap the yarn around the bobbin.
Don Kleppinger I thought the bobbin would spin slightly slower as the scotch tension band is stretched over the bobbin pulley.
Hi...
Would a wheel like this work for horse hair?
Regards...
Yes it'll work.
this is so cool!!
I love!!

Hahahahaha oh me too thanks for commenting or I might not have figured it out
Bonjour comment je puisse vous contacter j aime bien acheter un
I never noticed this before and I've watched this video several times. Why is he spinning so close to the hole?
people have different ways of spinning. This probably works for him. Personally I prefer to keep my hands much further away from the wheel.
His technique could use a little work...lol. Very sweet of him to show the basics, though.
You are watching a woodworker spin.
@@oldleatherstocking3185 I like this video very much any way
we do work 4 this company,i spin wool, great video
Can anyone tell me if the Kiwi 2 works well with Alpaca?
Hi Karin, You can spin anything on a Kiwi 2....it is not the wheel that determines the yarn, it is the spinner. The Kiwi is my favourite wheel and I have spun all kinds of fibres on it. Happy spinning :-)
Thanks, I am very excited to start! :)

So many fake reviews below - LOL!!
Im not.a new spinner and I don't think this is a very good tutorial for a brand new spinner. No explanation of the parts of the wheel.
