  • I've previously posted an excerpt( Jaco's solo on "Elegant People") of Jaco sitting in with Randy Bernsen's Ocean Sound Band in Fort Lauderdale in January of 1987. Here's the complete set. This was Jaco's last period of consistent great playing. He had just returned to the US from a successful tour of Italy with Bireli Lagrene and Serge Bringolf, and had relocated to Florida with hopes of reviving his career or at least continue on this healthier path. In fact, the shape Jaco was in both on and off stage showed such promise that the head of Zebra records seriously considered offering Jaco a record deal. Sadly, as we all know this was not to last and Jaco fell off the wagon big time and returned to living on the streets not long after this. 8 months later he would be gone :(
    Venue & Musicians:
    Musicians Exchange Fort Lauderdale
    Randy Bernsen - guitar
    Jaco Pastorius - bass
    Tom Lee - drums
    Taras Kovayl - keyboards
    Set list:
00:00 Randy Bernsen welcomes back Jaco
    00:14 Chromatic Fantasy
    02:32 Elegant People
    13:29 Las Olas
    20:24 Olde Hats
    30:54 Band Intros

Never heard this before! Thanks for posting. Jaco is by far one of the most underrated musicians of all time.

You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed the recording. Yes, when you consider the magnitude of his once in a generation talent as an innovator on bass and his abilities/promise as a composer/arranger, I agree with you that he's underrated.

Great to hear this! Have loved Randy's playing since that time. Met and played with him at the benefit for Jaco September 1987 (with Pat Metheny and Peter Erskine). I played bass for most of the benefit. I was invited by Rory P, my very good friend. Got to hang with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Jaco's dad also played drums. An amazing and sad weekend. Jaco who loves you brother!!

You know what gets me about Jaco? I always used to think he could play as well as he did right out of the gate from the very first day he picked up a bass guitar, I just can't imagine him as a beginner, it's like he was a total natural and always a virtuoso from day one.❤

Really? I didn't know that. So, how old was he when he first picked up the bass guitar? I know he put out his first album out, Jaco Pastorius, "Jaco Pastorius", at the age of 19, anything before that I haven't got a clue. Please! Enlighten me! As a outsider I'd like to learn.

@@TheOtherVillager That's amazing, that's only 7 years from beginner to pro. I've been playing that fivefold, and I still can't hold a candle to Jaco Pastorius is playing.

Pastorius sembrava in ottima forma. L'avevo ascoltato in Italia a Pistoia il mese prima con Bireli Lagrene e Serge Bringolf, e anche in quell'occasione aveva suonato magnificamente.

Oh yes. That was the setting for the times I saw him in '82. I saw him play at another venue down the street on Sunrise Boulevard, Caribbean Cafe or something like that a few years after. He played solo, alternating sets with Othello. Not such a great performance from him then, he seemed pissed off. The shows in '82 were legendary. As were the orbit of excellent local musicians that played at the Cafe Exchange that summer. @@JacoPastoriusArchive
