Bought the Cheapest Rolls Royce - Will it Run? 1971 RR Silver Shadow Saved from the Crusher!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- We bought a Rolls Royce as an experiment to learn about how the systems in these cars worked and with a simple goal to get the car running again. This car was purchased from a towing company who removed the car from a homeowners backyard; it is unknown how many years this car sat parked. Regardless the towing company figured it might be worth something and instead of sending it straight to the crusher they brought it to their lot. We were the lucky(?) buyers of the car. Will we get it running again?
UPDATE: We never expected this video to gain traction as much as it did - our first 1 MILLION view video! We've gotten a lot of comments about restoring the car, etc and there is simply not enough ROI to justify spending thousands of dollars into restoring this car that's super rough.

Video 2: • "Cheapest" 1971 Rolls ...
You guys seem like good mechanics but why not clean all the debris out of the engine bay before you start opening up engine components allowing dirt to contaminate them. A car sitting that long needs all the fluids flushed, gas tank removed and fuel lines replaced before attempting a start.
You think: a good mechanic, never strips down anything until it is very clean! Also once the work area is clean, you make sure You are as clean as a surgeon.
Would You let some scruffy person to operate on you?
Retired now, but thank you for saving the good Mechanic's names. 😁🔧🇬🇧
The gas tank and the fuel lines are completely rusted through as are most of the brake lines. The car runs and drives now on a boat tank. Our goal with anything we get in is to verify that it will even run before spending any real time or effort on it. After we verified that we did go back and clean the car as well as the engine bay. RR where we are are not really worth anything this car is really really rough and will never be restored.
@@ResurrectedGarage Thanks for the update. Good luck with it.
Those are jerks not mechanics.
Exactly!😮
If it had been me I would have cleared all that rubbish out first. Such a beautiful old lady.
Looking back yes we probably should have but we were excited to see if it would run before we put any extra time and effort into it.
I used to work for a collector in Santa Monica who had a bunch of them, parts are very expensive.
Hard to fathom how anyone could let a car of this stature get into such bad condition.
It's two years on since you found it; hope she was restored to her former glory and is in now in a loving home..🤗
There aren't many people that will work on a RR where we are and most of them end up sitting on marketplace unsold. This one was picked up by a towing company - I'm sure they got paid to get rid of the car off the property. We still have the car; we have been looking for another set of wheels for it. This one is too bad to restore and for us there isn't a return on investment to make it nice. There is another nice example that's on our channel that has been for sale for months now with no takers at 8500.
even Rolls Royces depreciate-- at a greater drop than most.
Absolutely. That likely has a lot to do with how they get in this shape to begin with
Just put it in the crusher they were crap when they first came out my mate bought a brand new one 1978 and it broke down on the way from the dealership all the carbonators were leaking petrol it was returned and he demanded his money back
You had trouble opening the “hood” kind sir, because on a Rolls Royce it’s called a “bonnet!”
If ya gonna be fancsayyy don’t say bonnet say bonaaaay
It’s the Hood here in North America
Americans call it Hood correct and here in the uk we call it Bonnet as we call the back the boot and Americans call it trunk but remember this..the English language came from where please you lovely Americans 🤔
@@NR19770 the english language came from Latin, French, Greek and German languages
Yeah we call it the bonnet in the U.K. so fucking what
Sad to see this beautiful car in this condition I once worked for RR I put in 33 years service please let me know how you are doing with this restoration.
Hey Mr elephant, underneath all that nastiness was a beautiful ride waitin to come out
It’s sad to see this wonderful auto in such sad shape. Thanks for showing this car some love!
We are working on getting it back on the road. currently trying to get the brakes working. There will definitely be a follow up video.
It's a crime to let a Rolls Royce get into that state. Hope you guys save it.
Thanks, we still have the Rolls it's just on our long term builds.
🤔 Very interesting video. But please keep in mind, there is no such thing as a cheap Rolls_Royce or Bentley car, then and now.they will always be expensive to run, and keep on the road. Although I guess you are going to try and carry out most of the work 💪 yourself. Good 👍luck. P.S. I myself own a few of these vehicles, much later models from 1990s. Silver Spirit, silver Seraph, Bentley Brooklands etc.....
At least the earlier ones like this were a simpler car, not full of weird suspension and computers.
Now I know I'm really old, seeing this car in this shape! Back in 71 my uncle bought a brand new Rolls Royce silver shadow. I remember seeing it the very next day. I was 12. My God, what a magnificent car it was. And the beautiful leather interior...just smelled like.....MONEY. I loved riding in it and driving it when I turned 16. I actually took my DMV driving test in it! He traded it in after 7 years a bought a Porsche 911. That car was awesome, but in a much different way. Yes, I wish you could have seen this car in 1971.
Awesome to hear. We are hoping to get our hands on a 911 to bring back to life in the not to distant future as well
I still have my granddads '74 Green Camargue and I also own a '92 Triple White Corniche. You need to drain and clean fuel lines of these money pitts😵💫😳
Yeah brother, they were beautiful rides, anybody who was anybody had one of these, I know a doctor who lives in the city where I live, that has one of these, and he's the only one in town who has one.
It's criminal to let a vehicle of this prestige fall into disrepair like this
We would love to find out the backstory of this car and how it ended up like this.
With enough time and effort that car could be worth a small fortune. As long as you've spent a much larger one.
And people wonder how these cars wind up in this shape in the first place 😂
Unfortunately, these are not worth a small fortune even in the best condition. You can get a very nice silver shadow for $15,000. It's a shame, but big luxury sedans just don't hold any value.
@@dwderp it’s funny how many people don’t realize that the car isn’t really worth doing a $100k resto on.
Problem is the rot in it, if the cross members under the floor are rusted out its trash. We break better ones for spares. Could find one in the UK for 2000 bucks.
Absolutely NOT. Shadows have meager value.
Makes a change to see a car with the steering wheel on the proper side
"Proper side????" Will it be made for USA mail delivery??? Think.

Whatever you do don't put brake fluid in it! If you do, expensive things will start to explode. You have get some special, hundred dollar, high pressure mineral water from Rolls Royce. Also I think the brakes, and rear suspension are somehow connected, but I am not sure.I do know that you need to do your research with a Rolls Royce. If you don't things get very expensive.

RIP My Lady.
American Hick Mechanics And A Deceased Rolls Royce. It’s A Very Sad Situation!😟
The guys are currently working on the brakes and getting it road ready. We bring them back to life, we don't let them die. 🙂
Sorry we couldn’t find a DNR
Hello how are you doing 😊
How does an expensive and valuable car just get abandoned to deteriorate and end up in a state like that?
And was the oil and filter changed? I do hope so. The engine is the most expensive part - just putting in petrol, connecting up a new battery and trying to start it with sludged up oil and a cruddy blocked oil filter is probably the quickest way to damage an engine that’s not been run for what looks like a decade or so.
Nope, the mineral oils was the most problematic and expensive
They really aren't that valuable when they get a bit older. Like any car, a Rolls Royce can become mechanically totalled due to the cost of repairs. A good Rolls like this is only worth maybe $25k in pristine condition. When it was parked it was probably worth less than $10k. Parts alone to fix the Citroen-esque Hydropneumatic suspension (licensed from Citroen) can exceed that. Add faded paint or a worn interior and a luxury car that is out of fashion and it just isn't worth it. Some parts, like the Chevy truck A/C system, some of the internals of the GM TH400 transmission or the Lucas (or Delco) alternator are cheap- the bespoke parts are not.
You'd be surprised how many of remaining of only about 50 000 exemplars built are still banger raced (and valued at banger racing for their strength)
First sensible post in a while. They should have changed the oil and filter, removed the spark plugs and poured some light oil into the cylinders. It should have then been left for a time and turned over to ensure that the piston rings weren't stuck to the bores. Sadly, the first thing people say when they get a car which hasn't been used for a time is "let's find out if it will start". What's the hurry? Better to spent a few hours rather than risk doing damage.
careful you don't bend those hydraulic pump pushrods ! Been there.
Good Luck on this Project , they always seem like a good idea ,untill you start Pricing the Parts you need , make sure you or nobody else’s poured PetroleumBased Brake Fluids into any of the Hydraulics because that just disentigrates the VirginRubber the British used on the older Vehichles and Motorcycles it’s a Must to use only Vegetable based fluids in those Systems that was very difficult to find inAmerica years ago Fortunately CastrolGTX that is D.O.T. Compliant is easily found in most AutoParts stores and evenWalmart these days back in the 1970s you had to purchase it usually at Dealership Parts Counters at their rediculously marked up,Prices
Castrol RR363 in this one
mineral oil is for vin no 30.000 and onward

The best thing I ever did with a British car was traded it for a Suzuki.Wich I traded in for another Chevy for my wife.Who We', eventually traded for Some Other's
Certainly not a project for the faint of heart
Cool! I just posted my Rolls Royce video today. Good job guys!
Looking forward to the restoration video.
oh! Make it pink! 🌸
Thanks, I will check out your video as well.
Y'all be careful, making me nervous with that winch cable under so much stress with no blanket on it.
Thanks

Check su fuel bowls. Floats could be stuck. Tap fuel pump. It should tick when working.
In the next video/s of this car we get it running and get rid of the SU carbs completely.
Like most English cars at that time probably had Lucas electric as a majority of the electrical make up. Lucas electric was terrible. Lucas electric also did freezers refrigerators etc. There is a saying I've heard for years, that the reason why the British drink warm beer is because of Lucas electric. Good luck with your getting this car going.
Got to use that joke just the other day 😂
@@ManicWrench that is cool sir
I read once that Brits used to refer to Joseph Lucas, the founder of Lucas Electronics, as 'the prince of darkness'. Because of all the european cars running around with no headlights because of defective Lucas electrical system parts.
@@m6780 Hopefully they have fixed Lucas electric. Thanks for that information it as funny.
Yeah Lucas the prince of darkness 😂😂
I read somewhere that 80% of all RR produced are still in existence. It's criminal that someone abandoned this classy dowager!
"In existence" leaves a lot up to interpretation if you really think about it
It is due to overproduction with a cheap price tag
In combination with bad owners
@@ResurrectedGarage It is an old say from the past 1975 it was true due to al models up to Silver Cloud 1965 after that slowly downhill
compare that with the New R-R and Bentley proudution
just a few will get old
In my county no R-R was junked before 1978 and that one was in filing with burned down Now days it is diferent I must say
Has to be THE MOST BORING video I ever saw (double speed) on UA-cam.
This was one of the videos we did when we were still fresh with UA-cam. If we could go back we would do that completely different now that we have had more time to learn how to film and how to edit. We did make the RR run again and in a later video we got it to run and yard drive. The RR video is special to us because it was the one that monetized our channel and it's neat to look back and see how far we've came.
couple of toggle switch's and shes ready for the kid rock concert.
Cannot believe there working on a car without cleaning the engine bay out first … Dad always said SEPTICS can be so stupid at times it hurt to watch them
We bought this car for experimental purposes, at the time we weren't even sure it would run. Our goal was to see if it would run again then proceed with cleaning the interior/exterior of the car.
An expensive unit in it's day
Great work!!! I also loved to see ya'll put a bible verse in there, and a great one at that. God bless.
Thank you! You too!
What’s the plan with the beaut
Our goal with this one is to get it running and driving good enough to take it through a drive through (right hand drive fun) and then send it on its way to another home. :-)
@@ResurrectedGarage that’s so cool, I’m here for it!
I admire them its going to cost them a fortune to get reasonable looking I' have a79 shadow I have had it for many years
This is sad to see this lovely car like this I used to work on rr cars long time back loved them
Unfortunately this isn't the only we've seen just rotting away. This one was cheap enough for us to buy to use it as learning tool to figure out how they worked and get it running again. We've fixed a few other RR's for customers since then. They are beautiful cars.
Gor !!!!!....... Cylinders could do with release oil then -2stroke and spun over to oil the bores and rings !!!!
....
Then after the smoke has gone ---BETTER ENGINE !!!!
...
Be great if restored !!!!!😊
How much do you want for it!
Whatever you do with it will be better than it disappearing from the world altogether
Glad you agree
congraturation engine iswork lets revive and rerun again wishing you have lucky day
I think I would have written this one off. But we'll see.
Have had Eleven Bentley s and rolls made big profits with exception of a Turbo R.
Sorry, garbage but of the best!!!
I could have bought something similar in 1993 for $350 . But I knew nothing about how to work on them so I passed on it . The lady inherited it with the house . And didn’t want to scrap it . But she may have .
Amazing how you could start the engine without totally refurbishing the SU carbs, especially if they are HIF with the specific choke system.
The choke and cold start circuit not operating correctly makes it a massive pain to start
@@ResurrectedGarage Yes I imagine. This little valve is a real mess.
@@ResurrectedGarage By now you must have removed the dash pots, the round things on top of the carbs. If the pistons are stuck or sticking, the car will never run properly. They use a ATF in the top where those black knobs are.
That was a very thin wire, hauling that fat Rolls!
Yes it was, we were working with what we had at the time. Since then we've been able to upgrade to an actual winch.
Oh I remember that model. It was originally named "Silver Mist" but then it was learned what "mist" means in German (s__t).
If my memory serves me right Rolls-Royce was using general motors turbo 400 automatic transmissions. If that's the case a V8 swap with so many different size Chevrolet engines you could choose from..😊
Believe it or not the engine is pretty solid, we just have a problem with the overcomplicated brake system. This has become one of our long term builds but we plan to leave the motor/transmission in it for now.
It’s my dream Car😍😍😍😍😍
That is the model with the psychotic brake system. You are brave.
So often it is true that , rather than buy a bag of bolts , it is much preferable to spend a little more and buy a better one .
If you are implying that you can buy a better Rolls (even for more money) and have a better car you are absolutely correct
And yet sometimes, a 'towering project' is the thing to do!
Then you run out of money on the suspension. These things are awfull to repair and run.
With pressure in the accumulators it is mostly o-rings needed not so expensive parts it is the work to do it
@@burnotto1663 Ok good luck.

@@burnotto1663 I am a trained car/truck mechanic too and engines in boats so to speak. Cool that you are a RR specialist but these cars are far form easy to work on. Thats why they are cheap to buy but then the money starts to roll. There is no cheap RR anywhere.

I love cars...it breaks my heart to see a car scraped. Wonderful to see guys like u taking time and effort to not let the past die away or rust away.

They will certainly need to scrape a lot of dirt off.

Sometimes hosing alone isn't enough and you have to scrape a bit.

It is a minor problem with bennefits
I had to hang a pair of vise grips on the end of My key to start and keep my 73 silver shadow running.x
Easy fix I have done a couple
You were VERY lucky that steel cable did not break my friend .......
Yes, we used that winch for a little while until we were able to replace it with a much safer winch.
Those SU carbs need cleaning up. Clean the needle and free the pump action...

Wow is that the big end knocking
Ask any parts guy for any parts for a Rolls Royce, no matter what the parts are, (sparkplugs) dollar signs appear in their eye.
That's why this RR will never be restored but we did start hot rodding it.
Thanks for the quote from the Bible very precious
Even with the engine running it still looks like a heap of junk not worth saving.
The car is pretty rough, we wanted to save it to learn about how all the RR systems work and get it running again.
6.0 LS swap, original rims with vogues, paint it black and put some decent interior and boom you got a fast luxury car.
Just ran across this video today ,nice lookin old ride .
Sweet! Thanks, this one is still hanging around. It's one of our long term builds.
Just needs a little TLC and it'll be fine, might need alot but once it's been given TLC it'll be just fine and run smoothly just like it did in 1971
Till I had all the legal paperwork, I wouldn't touch the thing with a hundred foot barge poll.
In GA as long as it's pre 1986 all we need is a bill of sale.
I don't know who let you loose on that butiful RR. But, you are doing everything wrong!
First, clean out engine bay with air line. 2nd, No one who knows anything about mechanics, scwerts "Easystart", into a quolity motor!?!
Easystart is for very badly worn engines, were the comprsion is so weak due to neglect or never been serviced.
If you are mechanics, please read or ask a professional for how to treat such a classic motor.
If you had to go under the knife, would you want the sergion, to be covered in dirt??? I think not.
This is not to upset You. It is truthful addvice, and if you start off with a clean area, you will save yourselves a whole lot of problems. 🤨🔧🇬🇧
This RR is anything but beautiful, it's really really rough. We are the only suckers that decided to save this car from being crushed. We bought this to learn all the ins and outs of RR. Since this was our personal car we wanted to verify that it would even run before we spent more time and effort on it. Later on we clean up the engine bay and get the car moving under its own power in another video.
Great bit of scripture!
Did you seriously skip over the second that you got it started? I just wasted minutes of my life waiting for that moment and you don’t even record it?
The GoPro messed up and I wasn't able to get the footage back. I did have a small clip of it on my phone and put it in the video but it was not as good. We've got a lot better with our videos since we did this one.
My self I'd have checked for a spark set up a temporary fuel supply and check the oil levels engines were so simple in them days.
We have a boat gas tank we typically run them off of, I couldn't tell if we used it in this video but the videos thereafter we were using it.
Probably the most boring video I have ever seen. Some blokes fiddling with wires while the camera person lets the camera wobble all over the place. Dialogue not up to much either. Yawn.
Good luck with the project. A bottomless bank account and a range of reliable contacts, some in the UK, will be required, no doubt! A RR complete owner's manual will be a big plus, no online BS efforts!
That's great advice. Please let us know if you can help us get access to the aforementioned bottomless bank account. It would make things go much quicker and easier

naughty boy calling it a Roller
Great video but there's one thing that annoys me and that is using ether to start a vehicle that's been stood for years. I've known engines not to start after excessive use....
Its just an opinion...not a criticism so please no bitchin 😀
Understandable. We know it's not the correct way to do that but thankfully after all these years we haven't had any lock down using ether. However, we did have had a customer a few years back that used to much and kept going with it; it ruined his engine and we ended up having to rebuild it for them. It definitely can and does happen. lol
It's amazing the "silver lady "is still there .

This video is over two years old at this point. As time has went on we've upgraded film equipment as budget has allowed and have more experience with editing. We started with zero experience in filming and an extremely outdated GoPro and phone. Our videos have improved significantly since this one was filmed; if we could go back and re-do this video with the experience and equipment we have now this video would be better. We can't change the past but we can continue to improve and get better.

We live in the US, that's not common dialogue here.
Sacrilegious to reduce a vehicle to this condition.
should have drained that old gas out and replaced it with some fresh fuel. LOL
We just wanted to see if it would run again, in the later videos of this car we eventually hook it up to a boat gas tank and run it off that.
