You picked up perfectly on the song! The front man, Ronnie VanZant wrote this as a warning to everyone in the band that they were heading down the wrong track with their drug and alcohol abuse, specifically himself and Gary Rossington, one of the guitar players who had crashed his brand new Ford Torino into an oak tree and caused a cancellation of about 2 months worth of shows. The leads are three different guitar players, Rossington, Collin’s, and Gaines exchanging parts. Amazing song!
“That smell “ is referring to the smell of coke, meth, heroin when it’s smoked or melted before injection. And the evils within. One of my favorites from Skynard is GIMMIE THREE STEPS. The lyrics are music is incredible.
You got that right Jennifer! I grew up in a " shanty town" myself and Skynnyrd has been my favorite band since I was 6 yrs. Old in 1975! The way we grew up was similar to Ronnie and the Boys. I was in bootcamp when the reunion tour happened in '87 but when I got out, we seen Skynyrd everytime they came our way. We made it a three day weekend , our bosses hated it
As are most of Skynyrd’s songs, it’s a true story, written about one of their three guitarists, Gary Rossington who was messed up on drugs and alcohol and wrecked his car. This accident caused the band to delay their tour and Gary was fined $10,000 by the band.
@@757optim I did a “Skynyrd Tour” with Gene Odom, and he took us to the alleged tree, and I actually have bark from it. However, I’ve heard that the tree he hit was no longer standing, so I don’t know. I’m inclined to believe Gene. I have a picture of it. It’s between two lanes, in the middle of the road.
@@Tuesdays_Gone I've driven the road thinking it might be obvious, but there are trees in the middle of the road in several places. Definitely not optimal for drunk driving. : )
I love how Ronnie sings along with the guitar at several points in this song. Just beautiful and powerful.
Call me the breeze!!!

Some of my favorite guitar work from Lynrd Skynyrd. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I could argue that is the best of their guitars.
Great band but you missed the message

Anybody know which tree in Mandarin Gary hit?

@@757optim Yeah, there were several. This one had English Ivy, or some type of Ivy on it. Beautiful location. Who knows.
Gotta love them southern boys! 🎸🔥🎸
