Just ran across this video. To lose a child anywhere along life's path is devastating. My condolences to the family. I thought that one could make segments of contrasting wood by rough turning the outside but matching the inside and gluing together. Next would be turning the outside and prepping for a lid of some sort. Will take time to watch the entire video in the future.
Brian was a handsome man with beautiful kind looking eyes!!! Those two fantastic little ones in the photo will shine some of his traits and spark memories of your son. May your shop fairies help ease the pain for you and your family's loss. I believe, ya'll will see him again!!! I'm a 4 month, new to turning lady who thanks you so very much for all you've taught me!!! May God be with you and yours. Take care my friend!!!
Mike, My condolences on your loss. What a beautiful gift to make an urn for your son's remains. You certainly caught me, and I imagine all your viewers off guard with the revelation that you lost your son two months ago. Thank you for sharing this personal information with us. Lou.
I am so sorry that you and your family have lost your son. The urn is beautiful - a beautiful urn for a beautiful soul. Heartfelt blessings for you and your family.
Mike, so sorry to hear about the loss of your son. This project must have been bitter sweet. What a grand tribute to your son. May God Bless you and comfort you as navigate your way through life without your son. Loss out of order is so very difficult.
Mike, I had not seen this one before. I enjoyed watching you do this. I am sorry to hear that you lost your son. My sincere condolences. Your video is very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Mike, it's really touching that you were able to use your beautiful urn for your son. That really struck a chord in me that something handmade and personal of yours should be so close to him! My condolences to you and your family. I'm so glad that you were able to get going on your videos after this heartbreak; 13,000+ people really enjoy watching you!
I didn’t know about your son until this video. My prayers are with you and your family. I know exactly how you feel. I lost my oldest son in a car accident in 2001, a driver crossed the center line and hit him head on. You will never know how much I appreciate your videos!
I'm sorry for your Loss. My Father passed away on 11 June this year. I'm not an experienced turner (I'm a cabinet maker who's just started turning). I opted for a an oblong box, about the size of a shoe box. Luck would have it that it was the right size. An interesting calculation on the size required. What I did find was that my father lost a considerable amount of weight in the few months before his passing, so if it is for your friend, I suppose that if you size it now in advance, then maybe at the time of her calling she will not need such a big Urn. It may have failed but I learnt from your experience. Thank you Mike.
It's heartbreaking to hear of the loss of your son. Being able to make his urn is a huge honor. I pray for you and your family as you go through the healing process and I trust the next urn will be perfection. Keep up the good videos.
Mike I'm so very sorry for your loss my friend! Prayers for you and your family that God will help ease the pain and emptiness you feel in your hearts. I have two grown son's and can't begin to imagine the pain of your loss.
So sorry for your loss. God bless you Mike and the rest of your family. Mike I don't know if this is the right time or not but I have drilled the pith out totally and put in a plug . So far it has worked for me. Sign your name on it so it looks like a medallion.
Mike, I'm terribly saddened at the loss of your Son. My prayers are with you and your family. May the Great Father provide a full measure of comfort and healing. I too, would fill that void no matter how much colored epoxy it took. It is beautiful. Thanks for your great and informative videos. Blessings. Edwin.
Wow! Sorry to hear of your lose Mike I know it has to be hard. I lost a younger brother several years ago and I can't imagine loosing a child. Hang in there and thanks for your videos. 😕
Thank you for the video, the lessons, and the experience. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Many future blessings to you and your family, and especially to your shop fairies.
Just like everyone else, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your son. Most of us can only imagine the grief that you must feel. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful piece Mike. Very sorry to hear of such a premature passing of your son! I am sure he will rest in peace in a beautiful urn turned by his father. My sincere best wishes to you and your family, with special thoughts to your wife and grandchildren. Regards Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontario Canada
Mike I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my Josh November 2018 at 37 engaged but no shop assistants yet. It never goes away but know that there are others who understand. Also know that I appreciate being able to learn from you! Regards Vic.
Ouch! I have had that happen, but not on a project of that size. Terribly sorry about the loss of your son. Words can't do anything to ease your grief, but I hope prayers can.
Mike sorry to hear about your son. Beautiful piece of wood might look great with a colorful epoxy fill. Glad it didn't blow while on the lathe. Thanks for sharing, God Bless.
Mike I was shocked when you said the Urn would be used for your son. I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you find some peace for your heart must be aching to have lost your son. We as parents as you very well know were not meant to bury our children. Trust that God has a plan for him and you will see him again. I will keep your family in my prayers that you may be comforted in your loss. God Bless you for all you do. Ed. Maynard
Mike, I hadn't caught this vid before over the time I've been following you--I like that you show us the whole real deal. I've encountered some unwanted cracks in Natural Edge bowls that I've turned, and turned the tenon recess through the bottom on a couple--I decided to make these resin/wood combo projects, and they came out well--I'm sure you've done something with this piece by now, just and idea FYI---thanks for the share on this one brother!!
My dear You tube friend, we have never met but you have become like family to me. You know well that as Christians we are all family. And I have just learned of your loss. I am heartbroken for you and your family. I lost my father in May and I miss him so much. I know it hurts even more to lose your son. This I know, God has his Hand on your heart, I see it and I sense it in your integrity. I will pray for your family that God will continue to bless you with abundant grace.
Mike very sorry about your loss that is every parents nightmare. I plan on turning urns in the future for myself and my wife your leasson will be of gerat help. I have some questions about your nova live center but to much for a conversation here. I bought mine after watching your video demo about it a while back. I would like to chat with you about it if possible.
So sorry for your loss Mike also sorry about the urn .things like like that happen with green wood .I make pet urns but l do segmented work .no cracking
Congratulations on "video of the week" they video was a good comprehensive lesson on making an urn. Good tips all the way through. I was actually thinking about doing a video on making the female insert from some 2 part cast resin. As your insert was larger, it is more difficult to find good thread chasing wood that is big enough. So your technique is a good option. And you are a good man for showing that spit at the end-sorry about that. Regards, Sam
Thanks, Sam. I had to go play catch up on my email as I did not see that. The 2 part resin is a great idea. I just got some 2 part epoxy putty from WoodturnersWonders.com that I could try out for that.
Thank you, Emiliano. Worst year of my life. I looked at your channel and recognizaed you from one of Alan Z's videos. Interesting seeing your virtual demo setup. I spoke with Alan the other night. I am beginning to explore getting setup for that. Looks like your setup is not as complex as Alan's, LOL. I need to start with a basic setup.
I haven't done much UA-cam videos. I did a few live ones... I like to do Live Facebook videos on a group that I'm one of the administrators. I will look into the resolution. I do not like editing! I have done a few live remote demos. I use my set up for the club too, when we host remote demos...
Sorry for your loss buddy. I lost my brother way to soon from ALS. Miss him more everyday. I was taught to stay away from pith since I've been turning. How about the pith at the bottom? No cracking?
Mike, As everyone else condolences on the loss of your son Brian--I am sure he will be in your heart always! I wonder how it would go with making two bowls and then joining them with epoxy to get the final urn shape? Since I have the small excelsior lathe I am thinking of doing this for my urn and also for my wifes. And I think I will use the pre made brass threaded inserts as I don't have your level of skill with threading. God Bless you and your family!
A hollow form with two sides can be an effect approach. The challenge is making a shape and fitting the ends together like a box with a recess on one and a tenon on the other. The other challenge is grain match and disguising the joint.
Mike I was watching you add threads to the urn and the lid. Is the threading jig something you fashioned or did you buy it? If you did buy it where and if you made it, have you done a video of how to construct it.
These are bittersweet videos, but greatly appreciated. Thanks. . It is difficult to find a large tree that cold be quartered vertically and have enough wood to turn this large. Alternatives could include segmented bowls, built up to the height required, or gluing lumber to obtain a blank that will be large enough for the urn. Glue ups offer the possibility of celebrating wood grain, especially with complimentary or contrasting wood. I felt your disappointment at the huge crack - could the urn be recovered by sawing it in half and gluing another piece of wood in the middle?
I guess that is an option adding wood but I would never be happy with the look. Burn pile and try again. I was given a huge piece of Bradford Pear so that is in the future.
My condolences to you and your family, Mike. A member of a woodturning forum I frequent is a funeral director and does many cremations. He says to size an urn according to the persons height, not the weight, because the volume of cremains is from the bones, everything else is gone. Maybe someone else can weight in on sizing?
My deepest condolences Mike for the loss of your son who now resides with our Lord, Jesus Christ as promised in the bible 🙏🏻🙏🏻. May your family find peace in the knowledge that you will eventually be reunited with your son in Heaven.
Mike that could actually be recovered with a little pressure pot and some strategically placed resin and I'm hoping your son is looking down and saying Dad give it a go? Deepest condolences. We should never outlive our children in the grand scheme of things.
Thank you for your condolences and messages of prayer and encouragment. It has been hard.

THere is a lesson in every project. Without failure, you never grow. This was a great ideo and I did learn several new things. Thank you.
Yes! Thank you!

It’s good to know that this can even happen to someone as experienced an knowledgeable as you. Lessons some of the pain for the rest of us!!
That is an amazing split. Been rough turning bowls this fall, ready to make some finished pieces.
Have fun!
It's heartbreaking to hear of the loss of your son. Being able to make his urn is a huge honor. I pray for you and your family as you go through the healing process and I trust the next urn will be perfection. Keep up the good videos.

I may try that but I think I will try a piece without the pith first!
My deepest condolences Mike. Turning an urn for a friend or family member is both deeply emotional and a great honour. Enjoyed the video
I appreciate that.

Sorry for your loss, may God bless and protect you and your family.
I always appreciate you passing on your knowledge to us younger turners (I'm 58 but 2 in turning years). May your son walk with the big boss everyday.
So sorry for your loss Mike

as always very good videos, Don't give up on that, can always put laces accross the crack.
Yup, but it won't hold ashes.
So sorry for your loss Mike also sorry about the urn .things like like that happen with green wood .I make pet urns but l do segmented work .no cracking
I may consider doing one with staved construction. Not keen on segmenting.

I see your YT's have a 360p resolution. Why not higher? As I explore this virtual thing I have a lot to learn.

Thanks for the video. I would like to try making an urn, but i want to do a segmented glue up.
I will probably do a staved one one of these days. I have no interest in segmentation.
Now cut a little of the split away and glue in a contrasting wood and start again. Now you know the button needs to be a little thinner.
Thanks for sharing , not all is as hoped
Sorry for your loss buddy. I lost my brother way to soon from ALS. Miss him more everyday.
I was taught to stay away from pith since I've been turning. How about the pith at the bottom? No cracking?
Tom, the pith was at the bottom, that's what more then likely caused the crack.

mike buddy im real sorry about your boy . nothing worse then losing a child . no matter what age they are . god bless you and your family brother .
Mike, so sorry to hear about your son, Brian. Same name as my only child. Prayers to you and your family, and God bless.
So sorry to hear about your son, we should not outlive our children. But as long as you remember him in your heart he will always be with you.
Mike I was watching you add threads to the urn and the lid. Is the threading jig something you fashioned or did you buy it? If you did buy it where and if you made it, have you done a video of how to construct it.
I think this video will answer your questions - or provide a link to another that might. ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=RIGS-fcl2LM
I did find your video answering my questions about threading jigs. Thank you.
These are bittersweet videos, but greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mike, can you turn a bowl with the pith in? I am new to turning and learning the hard way. Any advise would be appreciated Thanks
Generally not if you don't want serious cracking.
What was the plastic you used for the threaded insert?
It was from a thick plastic floor tile, the kind that would be lit underneath. Someone gave me one. I have also done with corian.
I am sorry. I pray your two Shop Fairies are doing well in their young lives.
fill the crack with resin and turn the piece again, might be a way to save a lot of work
Thanks for commenting.
OMG..... sorry for youre loss.
Thank you. Miss him every day.
life can be hard.... take good care of those little angels
We are not supposed to outlive our kids. Sorry for your loss Mike. I can't imagine.

E. Glide That makes sense butter wonder how much difference it would make in reality?
Aw Mike, that was a very poignant moment when you told us of your Son's death. Please accept my sincere commiserations.
Brendan.
