    Awesome! Thank you for educating me on the battery system. I have about 5 of the traditional 18v stock batteries that come with some of the tools, and I have noticed recharging them more frequently. I may be purchasing those in the not to distant future! great vid.

    That is awesome thanks for much for the info. Your video was great too. I actually was wondering why so many people wanted my reciprocating saw by ryobi the old blue one. I got like 21 bucks each for them plus 15 bucks shipping. It helped me pay for my new tools. Thanks a ton much appreciated!

    Thanks a ton dude! Great video. I didn't even realize I can use the new Li-ion batteries on those old Ni-cad 18v tools. I just got a new set for my Birthday and sold most of my old blue nicad 18v using tools on ebay thinking I could only use those ni-cad batteries. Oh well I still have the drill and a few others left so now i'll keep them. Thanks a ton for your video and I subbed

    Finally someone posted the new p108 ryobi batterys. Thank you. Can you make another video showing the huge performance difference? It would be really awesome to see the comparison.

    Correct, it is an overload protection circuit. The "battery" actually runs on a fairly complex little processor that will shut it down under conditions that might damage the power cells inside.

    The recall on the P108s is only for a certain production range, details readily available at local Home Depot stores. The recall does not affect the newest ones you see on the store shelves.

    I am use mine daily and am only charging them only twice a week, at the most. I spread the workload between three of the high capacity batteries. If you push a single battery to do all of the work, swapping it between tools all of the time, then it gets hot and that is what will reduce the charge time and battery life. If you have four of the P108s, and none of the other batteries at all, you could stay productive indefinitely. I have a half dozen of the other batteries I hardly use now.

    I have the One+ system with several different tools. I have a three and a half acre yard and can use my Ryobi line trimmer and trim almost all the yard on one 4ah battery. I find the 2 pack of the 4AH at Home Depot on sale for $99, usually around the holidays (Christmas, Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day) I have replaced all of my old NiCads with the Li Ion batteries and have a Ryobi Super Charger that keeps 6 batteries charged and maintained. I always have a couple in tools and the rest on charge. My old NiCads still work, but with the lithium batteries around, there's just no reason to bother with them. I would highly recommend getting the Super Charger, even if you only have 2 or 3 batteries. I have some old blue and new green tools and all of them perform very well. I'm pretty much sold on Ryobi 18v tools. I rarely use my DeWalt drill any more, unless I need 2 different bits at one time. It saves time not swapping.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 8 років тому

      It takes a fair amount of time to trim 3.5 acres. I don't see any point in the supercharger since you will barely exhaust one pack before needing the next, if you just invest in an additional pack that you have charged instead of the super charger. It's kind of silly for any other use than a work crew with multiple tools. Otherwise, more battery packs get the average person by till the job is done.

    I have a Hitachi 10.8 impact driver that I used to really like, then I left the battery and charger at a client's place and was never able to get it back. I had no other tools in the Hitachi 10.8 tool system, so I never justified replacing just the battery and charger, so it was a dead deal. If I lose a Ryobi or Dewalt item, it sucks, but I still have the rest of the tool system and a lot of redundancy since. Ryobi has the most complete tool system out there but I like Dewalts for power.

    I have a couple of demonstration videos up now but will be doing more. I can pretty close to run an off grid job project all day on three of these batteries if they start out fully charged in the morning. The life of the battery depends a little on the tool, and frequency of use.

    I have most of the Dewalt 18v XRP series tools. Look at my other videos. Far as I know, they don't have a cordless sander of any sort.

  • @8digitPDX
    @8digitPDX  11 років тому

    I have tried, but I need someone to hold the camera while I show this. The biggest difference I have found is with the saws and drills. Life on lights is longer, but they don't seem any brighter. The P108 will make their standard drill act about as powerful as a Dewalt. I would say the drill has 20% more power, circular saws 10-15% more power. The grinder seems a little more powerful, but is as good as the Dewalt anyway.

  • @8digitPDX
    @8digitPDX  11 років тому

    Depends on the batteries you are using. I own the Dewalt tools too, but they cost so much I don't take them out on any jobs where there is any risk of someone getting them out of my truck unless I know for certain I need the extra power they provide. Another point, in all honesty, I don't take the Dewalt tools to low paid jobs in the bad neighborhoods either. Sometimes there is no crossover tool at all, like the cordless oscillating tool, or cordless chop saw, which Dewalt does not make.

    No mention of the charger for this battery. I would like to know if the charger for my 1.4Ah Li-ion battery (output 14.4V-18V, 3A) will work for this battery, or do I need to buy a completely new charger?

  • @8digitPDX

    Only one production batch went on the recall. I own two P108 batteries and use them just about every day with no problems. I am not even going to turn one in on the recall until after it fries.

  • @nativeJRB
    @nativeJRB 11 років тому

    would this be also the reason why the p108 shuts off when pushed to the power limit on the ryobi 1/2" impact?

  • @aussie2uGA
    @aussie2uGA 11 років тому

    The P108 battery has officially been recalled due to fires. 4 of the batteries so far have caught fire or exploded. It is now illegal to sell them, new or used.

  • @8digitPDX
    @8digitPDX  11 років тому

    Then use those batteries with that tool or test it with a different P108 to see if that is still happening. Personally, if I need a tool to be heavy duty heavy cordless use, I use a Dewalt. My 1/2" impact is a Dewalt. Same with the reciprocating saws but the Ryobi reciprocating saw is definitely less pathetic when used with the P108 battery.

  • @nativeJRB

    so im wondering if ryobi is actually going to fix this? with the new batteries the 1/2" impact is useless, so ive noticed the black ryobi batteries without the gauge indicator doesnt cut power and the other older P103 and P104

    I used to have some of the older blue tools years ago, however I got rid of them based on mostly performance. I am seriously considering re-buying some of these, I understand the upgrade in performance due to batteries, as you explained, but in the example of the circular saw the green version is the same as the blue in terms the electric motor etc. My question is should I buy the blue and mix and match tools or just by the green in one giant combo kit, which I'm leaning towards?

    there is a big difference with the new 4ah battery compare to the previous lithium model.
    the différence is the lithium ''+'' . those battery are really more efficient in cold weather.
    when it is -20 outside even if you charged your battery(first lithium model) the day before they will all be at about 20% charge. the lithum+ is comparable to the hyperl lithium from ridgid and the blue core from bosh.

    Show me a Dewalt cordless sander and I will buy it, or cordless chopsaw, or cordless oscillating multi-tool, or halogen spotlight, or LED lantern, or camp fan, or cordless tile saw...
    Dewalt is mostly not made in USA either, they are made in Mexico. No single tool system out there does everything, so I go with Ryobi and Dewalt, it just happens that my Ryobi videos tend to be more popular.

    Yes, those shitty old blue body tools suddenly run with real power when you stick the P108 batteries in them. That's why I keep a bunch of those in my truck now and the Dewalts stay safely at home. I get the old blue body Ryobi tools cheap off people on craigslist and at garage sales.

    So, the 4Ah battery should add a little extra power to their new tools also, correct?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  8 років тому

      Yes, if you get their "pro grade" combo kit, it is their better tools for a heck of a good price (I recommend that kit to everyone starting out in the handyman trade) but the batteries in the pro kit are decent, you won't notice a major different in power, but it will show in run time. In comparison to the batteries with their standard kits, you notice the difference in both power and run time.

      Thanks for the videos and reply. Think I might have to give the 4Ah batteries a try. Already own the tools. Picked up the 5 pack w/brad nailer and then added the P234g. Mainly "DIY" use. Though the reciprocating Saw has seen a little use on the job. Have been impressed with the tools so far, expect for the normal drill. It gets the job done well enough, but, could use a little more grunt behind it. Hoping the 4Ah batteries will help that. Thanks again.

    Do you know how to check a Ryobi 18 volt P107 battery with a multi meter? I took mine back to the store because both battery's would only use 1 light bar out of 4, or about 5 minutes after about 2 month's old. I check with multi meter and it read 8.2 volts at full charge, Ryobi say's that normal. My tool was using all the light bars and last for an hour or so when first got it.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 8 років тому

      To check with a multimeter you should get near 20V at full charge, which means each cell is at about 4.2V minus the controller mosfets loss. No informed Ryobi tech would say it's normal for an 18V battery that's fresh off the charger to read 8.2V so either the customer service agent you contacted was an imbecile or something was lost in the communication. I'm doubting the charger would even indicate it was done charging at 8.2V rather than showing a fault condition then the protection circuit shut it off for safety, which makes me question the entirety of what you wrote as if something was reported incorrectly.

      July, 2014>("The lithium batteries will not read 18v when tested they will always read around 8v.")

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 8 років тому

      It is not true, they will never read 8V, would have to be damaged to read that. With a full charge they will read about 4.2V per cell x 5 cells = 20W. 18V is the nominal voltage of 3.6V/cell x 5 cells.

    • @job38four10
      @job38four10 8 років тому

      I agree with you, I don't understand why someone at Ryobi would say that, who ever heard of 18 volt batt. reading 8v. My Dewalt 20v battery's reads 20v+ when fully charged on the multi meter, which makes sense to me.

      +efrain dominguez Correct, all of the new batteries are 100% compatible with the older tools, and they even make the crappier older tools run better, especially the ones like the old 8" chopsaw where there were complaints about the tools being underpowered.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 8 років тому

      yes but your charger isn't. If I were you I'd buy a kit that has as many new tools as you can make use of including their newer generation charger. However, their impact drill has improved just like the rest of their line. At some point it doesn't make sense to pay a premium for 4Ah Li-Ion packs and a charger for a drill that's worth maybe $15 today, bettered by their newer version which sells for under $40 for the NEW (full lifetime ahead of it) bare tool. It's your call.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  8 років тому

      +Stinky Cheese the 4AH batteries never come with the combination kits, otherwise the advice is good. Also, on the new product line, they have a standard and premium grade on the impact drivers, with some big differences. Personally, I tell people to buy the pro grade kit which comes with the slightly upgraded tools, then get a two pack of the P108. Batteries when they are on sale. I can run a jobsite on six of the P108 batteries and two chargers. Currently, the car charger is the core of my off grid setup. Also, as soon as you own any of the lithium ion batteries, throw away your Nicaea chargers in order to avoid inadvertently sticking a lithium ion battery in one of the old style chargers, which will ruin the battery.

  • @stinkycheese804
    @stinkycheese804 8 років тому

    You focused WAY too much on batteries. Expensive as they are, I have a great OLD Dewalt NiCd drill. It's not the battery, rather user ineptitude. NiCd users were draining their packs too low and damaging them because the tech was immature and the users clueless, so there was no cutoff circuit to protect the packs.
    This is not "very similar" to generic "hotrod" packs. Those lack the most important parameters which are current delivery COMBINED (not trading off one or the other) with recharge cycles.
    A bar graph for charge state is not an on-board diagnostic. It's just a overly crude voltage measurement for users too ignorant to make use of real information. In other words, it would be better if it were an actual LCD displaying voltage but the average person is too ignorant to know what that voltage means.
    It is true that a higher capacity battery will run longer at higher output. You're completely right that this makes their 4Ah packs superior to the old ~1.4Ah NiCd. Of course, it goes without saying that newer battery tech, and larger packs, are an improvement. They always were.
    Avoid the generic rebuilt packs. There were a bargain back in the NiCd days if you just wanted another year out of a tool but with Li-Ion, it's not worth the risks of fire. Remember, it's not just "what are the chances of fire", but also, if there is a fire, can you realistically sue someone with a little shop on ebay or amazon that's located in China? Accountability! Don't buy something prone to burst into flames if the seller can't be held accountable, even if you do have insurance that covers that and then there is a shady subject by itself. If you buy aftermarket modified equipment that is not UL listed, your insurance agent isn't going to be happy to pay out on a fire claim, to say the least.
