Something of a sequel to Eternal Rhythm, his classic meeting of free jazz and world music from five years prior, Eternal Now found Don Cherry entering the studio for the tiny Sonet label, once again with members of the European avant-garde scene (this time from Sweden). This time around, though, the focus swings decidedly to the world-folk end of things: The only standard Western instrument is the piano, featured on only two of the five pieces (one of which is a non-traditional, African-styled repeated figure for two pianos and three players). The other instruments -- which include a great deal of percussion -- come from Africa, Tibet, China, India, Romania, and Indonesia. The session has a very loose, exploratory feel (four pieces are around eight minutes or more), which leaves lots of room for the musicians to play with the exotic textures of the instruments. The arrangements tend to be sparse, with plenty of open space that allows each instrument to be heard clearly, making for a sound that's similar to some of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's '60s work (on the same note, the percussion on "Tibet" also recalls the AEC's "little instruments" experiments). Cherry and the rest of his musicians hardly approach the project in a traditional manner (none of these intercontinental instrument combinations had probably been tried before); the whole point is to explore new musical possibilities and commonalities among cultures. While the results do meander occasionally, Eternal Now on the whole remains a fresh, unpredictable listen. (Eternal Now was reissued in full as part of the two-disc set The Sonet Recordings.)
I worked with a guy at the railroad in L.A. in the 90's. He told me he went to high school with Don Cherry. He said he carried his horn with him every where throughout out high school.
Just every note of these tracks really is just so refreshing to listen to at a truck stop in Grand Ledge,Michigan USA at 5am alone in my Jeep Patriot!
you mean fiat junkmobile
No idea why, but that is such a curious and wonderful visual, thank you!
nice
Hi sir I m also staying in Michigan . 1 hour away from you in Southfield. I work in Jeep plant as engineer and I can relate ;)
I heard A Love Supreme for the first time when I was a teenager. Of course I was blown away. Ever since then, I've had an appetite for avant-garde and cutting edge jazz. This is an excellent example of the genre. Don Cherry is in a class of gifted composers who can take the inherent tension in free jazz and come out with something that sounds very musical. ✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️
well said. His soundtrack work for Holy Mountain is also really good
Do you have any modern recommendations for such music?
@@cloudthief8918 in fact, the saxophonist Kamasi Washington might be a good contemporary fit. His style is not unlike that of the late John Coltrane

@@cloudthief8918 checkout the international anthem label, they release gem ater gem regularly. For spiritual jazz angel bat dawid is great, for free jazz i would recomend matana roberts
Hockey Night in Canada will never be the same.
I constantly see you commenting on videos I watch. You have good taste, my friend.
Those people that fired him suck
I first heard Don Cherry through The Avant Garde with John Coltrane. This came up on my suggestions, and wow.. very pleased to hear he was also an artist who rode his own wave. These are beautiful sounds
how not to love this
Something about "Moving Pictures For The Ear". It's so evocative. I close my eyes and listen and I see ... moving pictures for the ear... lol. I could listen to that song every day and never get tired of it.
'horsey horsey do not stop-just let your feet go clippety-clop'
I share your thoughts totally !!
Here, not only are melodic contours known and appreciated by the Hindoos, but also an absolutely
new harmonic material, which brings us prisms, clusters of chords, thick chimes, and garlands of garlands. What strikes first of all in this music is, on the one hand, the penetrating charm of harmonic aggregations and, on the other hand, the absolute clarity of intervals !
La música de Don Cherry siempre alude a la trascendencia.
I agree my spanish friend best of luck. Lo mejor de las suertes
this sound and its cover art moves soooo
Un disco straordinario, miscuglio di sonorità e generi, mistico e mitico al tempo stesso, da ascoltare in solitudine o con persone silenziose, attente e rispettose di tutto e del Tutto. :-|
Don Cherry: eternal now!
Nana Vasconcelo definió a Don Cherry como un conservatorio ambulante y no se equivocó. Muchas gracias Don por dar tanto.
Another great record!
Spiritual jazz at its finest...
I'm lucky to have this one on vinyl in great shape. What a pure pleasure!
Thanks to post such a pearl.
Spiritual jazz... is that a thing?!
I like that!
I don’t cherish the church-bells-like-sound the first 2 and a half minute of title one! I am not a religious person
His Book The Organic Music Society is a must have🌸💜🌸
Luv you Don and miss you, your sounds, your smell, your laugh all truly a gift to my memories!!
Brilliant inspiring sounds, Don Cherry was 1 of the top 10 free jazz giants & world music was his sonic oyster ;-)
Don Cherry, Absolut Genius.
wow that cover is amazing!
Saturn Archives - you are so amazing for making this album (and so many more) available. Please, don't stop.
Agree!! Thank you for turning me on to so much music I never knew was out there!!
agreed!
OMG I discovered this album back in the early 80's while attending Berklee in Boston. It was such a new and interesting concept of music I was discovering with all the percussion and ethnic type instruments playing "sound" more than chord progressions and melodies. This and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, along with some early electronic and ambient music completely opened my mind about what "music" could be. I have never been able to find this recording since selling off my record collection 30+ years ago, so thank you for posting this!
the internet can be good sometimes. :)
what a beautiful arrangement of sound
Every second of this record brings solace to my heart. Thank you, Mr. Cherry and company. And I salute the Archives for sharing it.
How did i get to this place... I am so grateful
Thanks for posting! The late '60s live - even past 1974. Still do, in many Heads!
That's the people that regimes world wide should financially and ethically support for keeping and spreading what should be kept and spread. Sadly it is vice versa: we enjoy all those treasury uploads on yt hoping a record or rights company employee won't take notice. O tempora O mores. Thank you for the present of the gifted.
Damn all of his albums blow me AWAY!
cool music my mystical dudes
Don Cherri, es lo mejor
You re great Saturn Archives!!!!
This melts my soul
Way ahead of its time and amazingly fresh. Thank you for posting.
I came here by accident, but I think I stay for a long while ;)
Doing a research paper on Dadaism, this is the perfect music to do it to

@@megavide0 Thanks for this, i may go crazy with this but I'll take the risk
@James Kirk Correct, and according to some people ended in 1923, but the concept itself isn't something that can have a start and an end
and consequently neither a middle..
@James Kirk and right fucking NOW
the eternal now. the source of all things.
@DIV1NITAL bummer
One of his most fascinating albums. The Sonet label had the Universal Folk Sounds series that was so excellent. I tried to buy all of them. I didn't succeed.
Was Don Cherry underrated ?
@@truthlivingetc88 yes he was
Must be like trying to collect all the killer, yellow label, "Rhythm House" India Classical music tapes. Never going to happen.

...I wonder what/who the lead wind instrument is?I like watching Don Cherry docs on y tube...he was a mighty creative force of nature
@@cosmicman621 i think its Don playing the Tárogató, a kind of wooden sax

Magico
Thank you for posting this treasure.
I have no doubt!!!
anyone specific ?
Very cool.
album' s name says it all
That percussion & horn-air-gasbag instrument thing sound pretty rad. Drums are on point for certain.
Gänsehaut pur !
So cool! 😎
Really good.
Doesn't even have to play trumpet on an album and it's still great!
fist time I spend some time on Don Cherry. This is beautiful.
Don is the Man
juicy . mmhmm so extremly good
DEEP cover 🌳🦋🌳
French label Klimt Records just released this (March 2022) on pink vinyl. I believe it's a limited edition of 300 copies though I'm not certain. Soundwise it's pretty identical to this upload, no better or worse, although there is unfortunately a bit of surface noise on my new copy, particularly on side A. It may just be this copy, I have no idea. Just figured I'd share if there are any vinyl collectors out there who like me, wanted this album in their record collection.
Damn. Thank you!
Thanks, Surfer. Very cool!
Yes I love crazy sounds
Wow!
fantastic
Peaceful!
gracias!
I can feel dare to try that he think bad,
but so so good enough to be apprenticed.
💙😃🌸🌱
There's an upcoming book about Don Cherry and Moki Cherry (responsible for the tapestry you see on the album cover). It's called 'Organic Music Societies' and you can pre-order it now.
