not the warmth of the fire being likened to the comfort of receiving his approval...he didn't even wake up, not once...im going to throw up

Damn the symbolism in this is wild. The speaker (who in assuming is Emil in the description) likens himself to that of a moth, and his partner (Silas) to a butterfly. Moths are well known for being drawn to light sources, especially in the dark / at night, and love how we can see this sprinkled throughout the film.
There's the more obvious one at the end. When Emil says he's going to make Silas proud, that's when the house catches fire and kills Emil. Emil is a moth, and Silas is his flame. Emil is drawn to Silas, drawn to that warmth, but that warmth was a lie, and it killed him in the end.
However, there are a few other things I noticed. I noticed how, throughout the film, Emil is typically shown in darker settings. I specifically noticed that, as Emil is talking about their childhood, everything is much brighter. The world was still bright, almost as if the entire world was the light he was drawn to. But as they get older and delve into their profession, the settings get darker, and as they keep going, I noticed that Silas is always slightly closer to the light sources. And in the last one, Silas is next to the only light source (the lamp) while Emil is in the dark. It's showing the slow transition of Silas becoming Emil's flame. That Silas has become Emil's whole world.
Also notice, at the end of the film, the only really bright place Emil is shown to be in since childhood is when he is literally burning alive in Silas' flame.
And then at the very beginning of the film, Silas is the one who lights the lamp. Silas lights the lamp that brings Emil comfort, and it's the one that eventually kills Emil. Silas lights the lamp because he is the one who brings Emil that (false) sense of security.
This last one I might be stretching a bit, but at the beginning of the film again. When Silas is telling Emil he's leaving to catch more monarchs, Emil stresses that it's dark and cold. The fact that Silas is leaving him alone scares Emil. Without Silas, there's no flame to comfort him when he needs it.
If the people who made the film are reading this, I want to applaud you guys. Just under three minutes of film and you delivered such and interesting message and characters. I love Calarts films, but I can safely say this is the only one that has stuck around in my head like this. This is really impressive symbolism and storytelling, and the people and team who made this should be proud!

oh my god, your analysis is so detailed - I can say that the moth/butterfly symbolism and emil being drawn to a flame was totally in my thought process as I was making the film, but you brought up some things, like silas being far/closer to the light source, I never even considered (or maybe it was subconscious)! thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment, I’m so so glad you found my silly little guys meaningful hehe :]
a bit of background info if you’re interested (maybe I’ll type this up more officially in a pinned later), but the way I’m thinking of it, silas and emil grew up as very good friends who bonded over common interests, but after high school, in some way or another, emil ended up always being second best, even if both were extremely academically successful. this led to some kind of resentment/glorifying silas as a person on emil’s part, where he basically thought that becoming exactly like silas, a feat that is totally futile, will grant him the happiness he craves. this led emil to become emotionally dependent on silas, who in his own unhealthy way, was all the more happy to use emil to advance himself further in his career. so you’re totally right in saying that emil finds security in being with silas, who has become his purpose, but this kind of dependence is also a factor in why silas finds it difficult to become truly close with emil - he thinks emil is a yes-man and only after him for his excellence, which is partly true, so he relates himself to emil in the only way he knows how (pity). now the two are together all the time, as professor and secretary, totally inseparable (derogatory) ❤️ (also there’s some romantic tension if you choose to read it that way, but it’s not necessary)
anyway - all that is to say - thank you again for taking the time to analyze my film! I’ll pass your kind words along to my voice actors :]

@@ritachen531 Weather or not you meant it, this was still a really great film! I'm one of those people that tries to overanalyze books, shows, and films I like. So sometimes that might mean me noticing things that aren't actually there or stretching an idea out... but regardless, this film is still gorgeous!
Ooh, and I'm really loving the complex relationship. Emil trying to outdo Silas in something because he's always second best, and Silas as a result thinking Emil is just trying to one-up him even though that's only a half-truth... your character writing is very complex! I noticed all of that character in the film now too, so that is really good character writing.
And yes, I definitely did pick up on a bit of the romantic tension there lol. It's fine either way! :p
Thank you for some of your insight on Emil and Silas! They're very interesting characters in a very interesting world, and it was beautifully conveyed in this film! I did also see your other film, Star-Crossed - and I'll say that if you're considering a career in animation / film making, you should absolutely go for it. Your films are fantastic and you're seriously underrated!
Anyways I hope I'm not being too weird with the whole parasocial relationship kind of deal... I'm very sorry if I am.
But again, thank you for all of this cool insight into Silas and Emil, and thank you for such an amazing film!

It's a magic butterfly that has a fire-immunity aura. Otherwise there is no way he's not reduced to a charred skeleton or anyway for the butterfly to still be alive, even inside the jar.

in my mind, the fire only burned for a bit (enough to lightly structurally damage the house) before it was snuffed out, so emil only died of smoke inhalation instead of burning alive, which renders the body & butterfly intact
